Trump hits out at UK PM Theresa May after far-right video tweets - BBC News

Donald Trump has told Prime Minister Theresa May to focus on "terrorism" in the UK after she criticised his sharing of far-right videos.

"Don't focus on me, focus on the destructive Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom," Mr Trump tweeted.

The US president had earlier retweeted three inflammatory videos posted online by a British far-right group.

Mrs May's spokesman said it was "wrong for the president to have done this".

Just so we are all clear here, not only has the president essentially endorsed a radical right wing group but is now attacking our prime minister and essentially undermining not only her position but also has strengthened the position of radical groups across Europe. Trump has endorsed a dangerous fringe group and he has essentially legitimatised them. "Britain first" have gone from being something your racist uncle shared on Facebook to the world stage via the most powerful man in the world.

Shocking shocking times.

LOL. With every Tweet, Trump shows how much of a joke of a president he is.

When is this sideshow going to end?

Hopefully soon but I think that congress and the pentagon need to start looking at how they can limit his twitter/public speaking because he is not only weakening Americas position worldwide but he is empowering all the wrong people. I never thought I would live to see the day when the president of the USA endorses radical neo Nazi's domestically and internationally.

I agree something needs to be done. Hopefully not too much permanent damage will be done in the meanwhile.

Non compos mentis

So Trump is passing along untrue, right wing, news. Britain called him on it. Did he invent the term "fake news," since I never heard that term until he came along? The man seems to love his fake news.

He is an embarrassment to our country. I hope the next president can repair a lot of this damage. I also know that that may be very difficult, because a bunch of Trump supporters will soon appear in this thread defending his actions. We definitely live in shocking times.

Right wing media needs to stop touting this dumbass. They cheered us into invading Iraq, and now they make excuse and excuse for Trump.

If the right wing personalities stopped downplaying this stuff, maybe his base would actually think more critically. MAYBE.

But I am way to cynical. It will never happen. I actually don't know when the side show will stop or even if some of the damage is permanent

That's what I am wondering. When does Mike Pence, right wing personalities, or anybody in his admin start to realize this could mean long term or permanent damage to our country? What the hell are the people around him doing and thinking?

It's amazing how they can twist and excuse things. Even pointing out to them the videos may not be authentic and it still doesn't matter. It's just getting crazier and crazier.

Btw. Any official statement from the PM?

Those are some great questions. It makes me wonder if they truly support him or just biding their time until he's gone.

The white house themselves admitted the videos were essentially fake yesterday but that the "threat" was very real, 1984 kind of spin.

How are the videos fake? People have been arguing that they are not fake.

The first video distributed by Mr. Trump to his nearly 44 million followers on Wednesday showed a teenage boy attacking another and was presented as footage of a “Muslim migrant” beating a Dutch boy.

But according to local officials, both boys are Dutch. The clip was taken in Monnickendam, a small town in the North Holland province of the Netherlands, in May and shows a teenager punching and kicking another boy holding a crutch. Marleen van Fessem, a spokeswoman for the local public prosecutor’s office, confirmed the 16-year-old boy who was arrested after the video came to light was “born and raised in the Netherlands.”

The Embassy of the Netherlands in Washington then chided Mr. Trump. “Facts do matter,” it replied to the president on Twitter.

The two additional videos were taken in 2013, one in Syria, the other in Egypt, and are provided with no explanation of the political turmoil taking place in those countries at the time, and with no details on the extremist affiliations of one of the men in the video.

I'll just post what I said in the other thread.

Jo Cox's husband Brendan, who since her death has emerged as powerful campaigner for the tolerance his wife fought for, had his own response to Trump.

It is fair to say that all of us who spend too much time on social media have probably retweeted people we might not be aware of, or who have dubious views on other issues. If this were a one-off, I might give President Trump the benefit of the doubt. But it’s not. Trump, from the beginning, throughout his campaign and since the election, has used hatred and bigotry to mobilise support.

In short, what his track record shows is that this isn’t a mistake, it’s a strategy. The impact of this strategy is to legitimise those driven by hatred. It makes them think that their views are mainstream, when in fact they are not – and makes those already driven by hatred more likely to act on it. When the president of the United States promotes the deputy leader of a far-right organisation, it makes it easier for others to follow her example – and perhaps go further.

Jo Cox was a British Member of Parliament, murdered in the street last year by a supporter of the group Trump retweeted, who called out their name as he stabbed her to death.

Hopefully it will stop by 2020.

The momentum towards virulent contention in politics has been building since around 2002, if not 1997. Trump is just the pinnacle, one hopes.
