A Labour Party activist has revealed she was raped at a Labour Party event - but told not to report it. Bex Bailey, a former member of Labour's ruling body the National Executive Committee (NEC), said she spoke to "a senior member of staff" in the Labour Party, "but it was suggested to me that I not report it." She added: "I was told that if I did it might damage me". Ms Bailey was the representative of young people on the NEC from 2013 to 2016. She revealed the incident and chose to speak publicly rather than anonymously in an interview with BBC Radio 4's PM show. It follows concern over what some see as a culture of harassment at Westminster. She told interviewer Carolyn Quinn: "I was seriously sexually assaulted at a Labour party event by – it wasn’t an MP – but someone who was more senior to me. Asked what had happened to her, she said: "I was raped."

Ms Bailey said she did not inform police "for all the reasons that I think a lot of women don’t report this. I was scared, I felt ashamed, I know that the Labour party, like any family, loves a good gossip and I didn’t want people to know, and I also was worried that I wouldn’t be believed if I did." But she did report it to a senior member of the party a couple of years later, she said. "It was only a couple of years later when I had summoned up the courage to do it that I did say to someone what had happened." She said she had chosen to speak out and to do so publicly because things had to change. There have been a series allegations about abuse or harassment at Westminster, including:

  • Midland MP Mark Garnier, who .represents Wyre Forest in Worcestershire, admitted calling his former secretary “sugar tits” and asking her to buy sex toys
  • Former Cabinet Minister Stephen Crabb apologised for sending sexually explicit texts to a 19-year-old woman after he interviewed her for a job.
  • The Guido Fawkes website claimed Tory aides had compiled a spreadsheet of 36 Conservative MPs - including 20 ministers - accused of inappropriate behaviour. The Conservatives declined to comment.
  • MPs including Cabinet Ministers were named as sex-pests to avoid by female staff in a WhatsApp group, the Sun has revealed.
  • MP Chi Onwurah told MPs about problems in a Commons bar, saying: “I knew a number of researchers - male and female - who had been made to feel deeply uncomfortable in the Sports and Social club here by Members of Parliament”.

And Labour Birmingham MP Jess Phillip told MPs she had heard male colleagues complaining of a witch-hunt. She said: “As I walked here today I overhead two male colleagues walking through the halls whittering about a witch hunt that was going on in Parliament.”

No investigation. Just her admission. Posting it here for the Brits and the European crowd to offer their comments.

We're in a very strange place with regards to 'sexual harassment ' at the moment. The defence Secretary placed his hand on a reporters knee, 15 years ago, so felt compelled to resign. It feels like an unstoppable bandwagon, where genuine cases are lost in the noise.

He didn't resign because he put his hand on a reporters knee, he resigned due to a number of instances over the years. The fatal allegation being that he lunged at, and tried to kiss, a reporter, which is potentially sexual assault.

I simply do not believe that excuse. He resigned for something else, but found this "excuse" convenient. Even the reporter whos knee was assaulted, calls bull**** on this one.

Not surprising at all. That is how our male dominated society acts.. it happens in government and in the private sector. When you have mostly older white men running things, .. then this is sadly what happens when they feel untouchable. And yes they have been untouchable because of how our society works, because women are seen as inferior weak citizens. I am glad this **** is coming out, but we also have to be careful.

Think of it this way... man flirts with woman because he finds her attractive.. she does not like it, and accuses him of sexual assault... we are nearing that scenario with some of these accusations. Look at the complaints over Adam Sandler and his knee "groping" of Claire Foy on The Graham Norton Show... absolutely ridiculous that this could be seen as "sexual assault", but the fact is in some jurisdictions it could.

I don't see it as a white or black issue. It's all to do with 'power' over somebody.

Yes and no.. 99 out of 100 cases is involving males being the "powerful" one.. but there are some women doing as we have found out.

Problem is, this whole situation is actually historical and in many ways religious. Men have always dominated and abused women.. that is a sad historical fact. That we in the last say 50 or so years have moved to more equality between the sexes, does not mean that millennium of ingrown male dominated traditional abuse goes away overnight. It is a bit like racism... we have been fighting it since the late 1800s, and we still have a long way to go.

Could you expand on this a bit please? By ""powerful" one" are you talking about physicality or socially as in being the boss over the female involved?

Physical is rape.. but relevant. There is also socially, financially, job wise and so on. Take Wienstien.. even his alleged rape were based on his ability to ruin actresses if they refused to do as he said. Same with Cosby, Trump and many others. Trump for example basically sued the **** out of women accusing him, making it financially impossible for them to defend themselves. Or he bought them off.

You don't understand how the court system works. If the women had provable cases against Trump, or anyone, the state would press the charges, do the investigation, all at the state's expense. If a woman files a false case, however, she's guilty of libel and can legitimately be sued by the person she falsely accuses.

False accusations, sadly, are political fodder and we see copycat accusations all the time that simply don't hold water.

The best defense for a woman who has a real case against a man who sues her for libel and defamation of character is to continue to press charges. If she obtains a conviction, the case filed by the man is shot.

What a load of bull****. There was evidence against Trump, Wienstien, Cosby for decades, and the "state" did nothing because the state is owned by the rich and powerful. Trump has paid off tons of women including his first wife, who he beat and raped.

No wonder I couldn't find any tin foil in the grocery store - the libs have bought it all up to make their hats. LOL

I'd resign too for that "offence" rather than have it known I even remotely fancied a woman as ugly as Andrea Leadsom.

Getting better, you might remember we had a bereavement which hit my family in particular pretty hard. My focus in the family right now so I don't have much time beyond the occasional drive by surf.

How are you? (Bear in mind I might not reply for a couple weeks!) Things any better here?

yeah, I remember and glad to hear that there's some improvment. Family is ore important than any of this here.

I'm fine and things here are as they always are. Nitwits go and others come, whackamole style.

OTH good members leave and other good members join up, so I guess things even out.

Hi IC,

I didn't know, I've noticed you have not been around and have been worried if all was ok with you.

It is good to hear from you and I'm sorry for your loss. Take care and there's plenty of people here who will be happy to see you pop in again when you can.

I don't get when people says "old white men..." as if young, brown, yellow, red any other colour and age man don't have the same historical culture of male dominance and women subjugation.

Peterson has a theory about how men are actually just adapted by the women selection of male dominant. According to such theory such male dominance culture is actually a female influence. Not meaning of blaming women as if it is something conscious or planed by them, but meaning that it is just our evolutionary adaptation hormones and psychological, not just a culture.

People say "old white men", because historically you needed to be old, male and white to wield any power in society. Add to that, that religions were male dominated and women were seen as second class citizens and basically cattle.. well. Now days of course you dont need to be old, but it certainly helps in the west, to be male and white. Of course in Africa and Asia, then the "old white male" idea does not fit and has to be adapted to local conditions.

Regardless, all around the world, thanks to tradition and religion.. males dominate women. It has become less, and is not as much tolerated in the west, and less tolerated in the east as well, but that does not mean it is gone or even beginning to go. We in the west are critical of how Muslims view women.. funny thing, in certain parts of the west, our own Christian brothers are not far off the same view. In Asia, among most of the population, Women are not exactly equals either and this in the non Muslim parts of Asia.

Only places you really can have close to equality is in Scandinavia, and even here the ugly head of a male dominated society comes forward quite often.

He has also a theory for the reason of few women in top position:

Thanks. Things are settling down here, my eldest son was hit hardest by the death of our friend. I'd known Colin for years but he was like a "second father" to my boy.

he's coming round, young people do recover and he's become more determined now to make Colin proud.

Catch you guys again in a while, probably in the new year!
