Is Macron Europe's New Leader?

Jack Hays:

If only it were true! From Xenophon's "Anabasis" to the 'Mad-Mike' Hoare's "Wild Geese"/5 Commando, mercenaries have not saved the world, they've tried to save themselves and wrought havoc and ruin in their wake. But I diverge from the topic at hand so I will refrain from further duelling poems!

Cheers.

The poem was to honor the quite small British professional army which met and stopped the Germans in 1914, being largely wiped out in the process. The term "mercenaries" was a German propaganda usage for those professional soldiers, and was used by Housman as irony.

Jack Hays:

Ah, thanks for the clarification. My memory is unclear but didn't the Old Contemptibles of the BEF get badly beaten and slaughtered in the Battle of the Frontiers (especially at Mons) and the subsequent inglorious retreat. While I think they played a role in the Miracle of the Marne crossing Le Petit Morin, but wasn't it the six French Armies which really carried the fight to stop the Bosch juggernaut? Me thinks the Germans were not the only ones hard at work churning out war propaganda in 1914! "Poor little Belgium" and all that rot, eh-what?

Cheers.

Byzantine, Housman's poems, Varoufakis.... but not a lot of insight on Mr. Macron. :)

Hey man, we're riffing like free-form jazz musicians. Be patient and we'll get there, hep-cat daddy-oh! Just go with the flow and we'll swing our way to Macron real soon. Until then just enjoy the vibes.

Re your signiture, our dichotomy is really unity, man!

Yowza!

Haha, I know, I know. Just teasing you.

By the way - here are some random thoughts on Macron from the British press today:

Artursk:

An interesting article, especially for one like me who cannot fully comprehend the faith that younger folks have in the holographic non-reality of the social-media-projected world. They used to say, "Jupiter first makes mad, those he wishes to destroy" now it seems that "They make Jupiter mad, before destroying him", because he turned out not to be the Mercury they fooled themselves into thinking he was. Elect a neo-liberal ex-banker to power and then be surprised when he unilaterally starts dismantling labour and social protections? It's pretty daft to me. What were French folk thinking? The centre has drifted too far to the right if Macron is at its locus. Whatever happened to the middle of the road? But he does strike a dashing pose and has a good turn of phrase, so here we are, once again veering rightward. The only question left is can he resist the siren-song of neo-con military adventurism or will there be more Libyas in France's future? If he cannot resist he'll be as bad as Sarkozy was.bso not the dominant leader of Europe, just a pretty, petty, tit'Napoleon in an expensive three-piece suit without artillery skills. Plus ça change, plus ça reste le même!

Cheers.

Ypres.

". . . The fighting died down as winter began to set in; both sides were completely exhausted. For the small BEF, composed of prewar regular soldiers, casualties had been disproportionately heavy, and the battle became known as "the graveyard of the old British Army.""

The French of course earlier at the miracle of the Marne.

Having lived in Greece for three years, I'd say the idea of taking public policy or economic advice from a Greek academic is a bit like asking Pol Pot for human rights guidance.

And why would that be?

'And the weak suffer what they must'

No government is without their inadequacies.

Sadly, the government of Greece is defined by inadequacies. Mind you, I love Greece and the Greeks, and I'm not saying anything my Greek friends haven't said to me a thousand times.

No but that we have German opinion writers encouraging Merkel to fall in line behind him (Germans behind French? Since When??) on this vision for Europe thing is important, this is new and big.

This French crap shoot named Macron might just net something.

Trump is a reformer? I always saw him as a buffoon.

What do you think about the system being so bad that a buffoon with no experience can win the top job in a little over a year and a half?

Does this disturb you?

Because it should.

It's even worse than that, considering his opponent was personally nearly as bad and ideologically worse.

And that the D Party did everything they could to coronate her, for which they never apologized and were never jammed up for...yep.
