Anne Marie Morris, the MP for Newton Abbot in Devon, was recorded casually using the term at the East India Club in London, where she was appearing on a panel to talk about Brexit alongside Tory colleagues Bill Cash and John Redwood.

She should be kicked from the party...... and May should be ashamed for covering for her in the first place. The party knows her views, as she has stayed with her lover despite him being a racist.

Totally OT, but isn't English a luverlee language at times?
Morris was being disciplined and the whip suspended.
One would think that, to keep in character with her woodpile reference, she'd be taken to the same (or at least the shed) with the whip being applied rather than suspended.

All in line with chopping down a tree to then cut it up. Or moving into a house together to then fall out.

All right, all right, I'll leave the room now.

Unlike The Guardian article linked, I hadn't used the expression "nigger in the wood pile" since it was a normal expression. But I don't think that using it shiuld be forbidden in a democracy unless one doesn't mind that it won't work right. But say. Besides it being un-pc, why do you think forbidding free expression should improve a society? That seems bigoted and somewhat arrogant

It was never a normal expression.. it was always a derogatory expression.

Free speech does not mean that your speech has no consequences.

at the end of the day we are all the same .. same colour of blood , we can speak, we all stand on our hind legs, we all love and we all cry ... when i was a kid growing up in the 1970s one of my best friends was black he was always treated the same and he never faced racist abuse ... i grew up in a ex mining village where everyone relied on each other working down the mines

I thought that the Labour Party was apparently the only racist party in the UK so imagine how shocked I was to hear about this on R4 last night.

Re: Theresa May orders Tory MP to be suspended after using N-word

Oh, but it was. And saying it wasn't is typical of Newspeak enthusiasts. But it was a quite normal and acceptable turn of the tongue. It wasn't till the 20th century that it began to fall from grace and finally fell prey to Politically Correct Speak in its latter half. You just like to make up your own etymology like so many other things. What surprises me ist that you seem so often to believe them. ;)

Of course it doesn't mean that. And in a purely private organization, I would have no problem with the action whatever. On the other hand, we are very close to government in this case and we should not really want processes of state to forbid the expression of opinion, unless we are oblivious of the way dictatorships and mob rule tend to work.

The epicenter of this wave of political correctness is Germany (which given its history is unsurprising). Its been especially prevalent since the mid 80s. Here in the UK we have had whole rape gangs of Muslim men grooming and raping young white girls for over a decade with complete impunity. The local authorities more worried about being called racists for singling them out than in protecting these girls so nothing was done and their reports dismissed or ignored. Its the same reason the BBC cannot bring itself to call Muslim terror attacks what they are when they happen

Complete impunity?

That's not entirely accurate.

Just because you grew up among racists, does not mean that the term was a normal expression, nor it was not racist. There is no excuse for such terminology, now nor in the past. The N word is and always has been a negative word about people of colour.

Re: Theresa May orders Tory MP to be suspended after using N-word

The N word is and always has been a negative word about people of colour.

Yet in the US it's used without regard amongst black people. Rappers being the main culprits, to the point that pretty much every word that comes out of their mouth is n*****.

You hear it constantly in rap music, and in main stream Hollywood films.

If it's ok for black people only to use the word, then isn't that being racist against white people?..... Just a thought.

So it is racist because one word is off limits to white people? A word that was invented by white people to speak negative of black people? White people who enslaved black people for centuries and still to this day discriminates against them?

As for black people using it... think they have earned the right to use the word in any way they see fit.

What a load of babbling bollocks! Its never been a "normal " expression, only times in history people felt more inclined to get away with it.

The problem is not the word. It would be absurd to label a word itself a problem; objects are not problems, people are. The problem is its use as a pejorative against black people. That is, the problem is when someone uses the word to mean blacks are bad/inferior. When a black person uses the word, we know they are not claiming black people are inferior. That's why it's okay when black people use the word.

In short: the problem is the way the word is used, not the word itself.

It's not racist to recognize the importance of context.

Interesting take.

How would you interpret a Black talking if her family as niggers?

Ps: You really don't know much about etymology, do you. That might explain the bigotry of you reply.

Look it up. Nigger in a wood pile was a run of the mill expression.

That doesn't make it normal in the sense of not bigoted. It was still racist. It's always been racist. Just because you felt comfortable using racist terminology doesn't mean it was okay. And we might note, not everyone was comfortable using racist terminology even then. It was a shortcoming for anyone to feel comfortable with racist terminology, even "back in the day".

I cannot for the life of me think you actually believe that. I'd rather think you're attempting to dig yourself out of a hole, and doing a very bad job of it.

I would not interpret it as meaning black people are inferior or bad, that's for sure.

I guess one can take the position that language police is the way to go and allowing the state to forbid the expressions that a majority dislikes. That is, of course, the essence of fascism and actually much worse in regard to political systems than calling a spade a spade.

But you should think about hustory in historical contexts. What you might feel highly insulting or even a crime against humanity might be in a context you do not know quite normal, justified or even the optimum behavior.
