Brexit: Number of EU nurses applying to work in UK plummets by 96%, show figures | The Independent

Just 46 nurses from EU countries registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in April 2017, compared with 1,304 in July 2016, according to figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request by the Health Foundation. Bad news on bad news..

Who could have guessed leaving the EU would mean less people from the EU would want to work in the UK.

Why is the bad news? More UK jobs available for UK nurses.

Odd that they would compare April 2017 with July 2016. What were the numbers in April 2016? That would be a more reasonable comparison.

Nursing is already struggling to fill places, so where are these British nurses coming from?

There are not enough people in the UK who want to be nurses... hence the why the UK has to import nurses.

This government cut bursaries to nursing students. A poorly paid job whose pay has been frozen for five years, with extra tuition fees isn't attractive anymore.

I have no actual figures on how many well-trained UK nurses actually work abroad (finding better conditions than the lousy pay back home) but have heard that the number is fairly high.

Of course if a Brexit agreement is reached that involves EU nationals to be kicked out of the UK as much as it involves UK nationals to be kicked out of the EU (not likely in my opinion), that would rob UK nurses of this escape.

But a sizeable number of those has sought better pastures way beyond EU countries.

Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA are popular, but the Gulf states pay very well. Europe is less popular because our language skills are generally lacking.

Yeah, I met quite a few in the Gulf, oh-I dunno-ages ago.

Some European (EU) countries don't pay all that well either (exceptions confirming that rule) and thus have a similar problem with their "national" nursing staffs. By example you'll find a lot of Easterners already in hospitals of "rich" countries like Germany and there'll no doubt be more.

The EU hasn't prevented British nurses taking up posts in UK hospitals or prevented British students applying to become nurses. However if you read some of the Brexit people elsewhere on the web, it's like the EU has somehow made sure posts in the UK are for EU nurses only.

Yea so have I, even with Danish nurses and so on. Problem is, I have never seen any data confirming it. So just for kicks, I looked up the average Australian nurse pay and the average UK nurse pay. UK nurses get around 24-25 k a year. Australian nurses get around 26-27k a year.. hardly mind boggling more considering the cost of moving.

Now American Nurses get 55k on average vs UK 24-25 k a year.. which is nuts. One would expect that nurses would flood to the US, and yet the US is also lacking nurses last I looked.

So for kicks I checked the Spanish average wage for nurses... 32k pounds.. wtf? Problem is.. aint no lack of nurses in Spain last I looked, since Spain exports them as well.

And give the existing nurses WAY MORE WORK.. 1 million frail UK pensioners returning home.. auch.

The falling Exchange rate makes our 15th place highly suspect as I doubt many British nurses earn £44,000 a year however:

01. Luxemobourg $82,000 p.a.
02. USA $70,000 p.a.
03. Ireland $64,000
04. Australia $56,000 p.a.
05. Denmark $54,000 p.a.
06. Norway $52,000 p.a.
07. Canada $51,000 p.a.
08. Belgium $50,000 p.a.
09. New Zealand $49,000 p.a.
10. Chile $47,000 p.a.
11. Germany $47,000 p.a.
12. Spain $46,000 p.a.
13. Netherlands $46,000 p.a.
14. Israel $45,000 p.a.
15. United Kingdom $44,000 p.a.

Staff nurse on maximum (after 6 years) gets just over £28,000. Team leader max is £34,800. Band 7 is Charge nurse/manager level, tops out at £35,225
NHS nursing pay has been formally capped at 1% under the austerity policy since 2010 and has lost around 14% against inflation.

"Liking" is entirely the wrong sentiment for your post but you get the picture.

Interesting!

As to this one (with thanks)

Where the difference doesn't show as quite so great, I know in which country I'd rather be in hospital (if I'd want to be in hospital at all).

Even where in cases of severe illness the Spanish health system (insurance) provides a bed for any relative to see to the more immediate needs of his/her family member and thus take the load of the nurses, I've found that the gals here are still fantastic in their care.

Touch wood I've never had to depend on them myself but when my late wife was hospitalized I saw the lengths the nurses went to.
