Britain almost made into the left side of the chart too! Was Australia's "douze points" for us a political vote?

I'm, as always, disappointed that Australia, my favourite European nation, didn't win. But well done Portugal.

Very pleased that Australia voted according to their Stockholm syndrome instincts. Good vote for the UK. They needed it.

I'm devastated that Spain is putting so little effort into things, but delighted that Eurovision next year is going to be closer than if we'd won it ourselves - 5.5 hours to Madrid, 5 to Lisbon.

Please, please listen to Salvador Sobral's album Excuse me. It's great!

BTW, Australia wasn't disgraced even 1% by Isaiah. He did a great job and I really hope the boy's going to have a serious music career.

I've never understood why. In all our discussions I've never hand any inkling why there was this slightly kooky side to your music tastes.

That's where you go wrong. It's really very little to do with my taste in music, although I have found some performers there that I've subsequently become a fan of. It's about the spectacle, the staging, the silly intrigue, the gossiping. It treats petty nationalism with the ridicule it deserves too. Really. If you can get nationalistic over a 3-minute ditty, what does that say about you? Are you listening Messrs. Putin and Erdoğan?

The whole premise of Eurovision is ridiculous, we all know that. How is anyone supposed to compare the merits of a jazz ballad with thrash rock, gypsy wail or technopop dance track? You can't, but why on earth should anyone care? It's entertainment, and the huge viewing figures suggests that a lot of people love it. The music is by-and-large forgettable, but far from being utter garbage. There were at least half-a-dozen songs last night that I'd be happy to have come up when I shuffle my iTunes.

Also, and lastly, it's a gay thing too. Think of the ESC as the gay Champions League final and you'll have an idea of its place in our queer culture.

Yeah.... bet you don't know why he likes the programme.

Thanks Andy..... but none of that really explains why you like this programme. Well maybe the gay Champions League things kid of does but it still makes no real sense.

Just personal taste?

What else? Why do you like what you like? It's like the previous mention: Adele. For the life of me, I cannot understand what people see in her. She's a good, if not great songwriter, but her voice is so harsh and strident that it's like fingernails on a blackboard to me. Live it appears she can't stay in tune and although I like her presentation style, the music is unbearable to me. Can you explain what makes her such a successful singer? Or even better, if you like her, why do you like her?

I really don't sweat the why. People just do seem to like Adele, and Eurovision. Now, just a little bit of magic. If you don't like this, you have no soul...

I have no soul.

I heard it on the radio this morning and fell asleep half way through.

I have no soul.

It's an awful song.
There are certain national folkloristic bases that profit to the point of improvement from being combined with elements from other musical strains.

Fado is definitely not one of them.

It can only be spoiled.

P.S. Of course this is arguing over taste, an exercise that can be as much fun as it is totally pointless.;)

Conveniently precluding you from starting to groan, no doubt.

I pride myself (possibly kid myself) on having "Soul" and that piece ain't got none of it.

All personal musical taste no doubt.

Sorry Chagos, but there's no Fado in that song. It's just jazz, and quite trad at that.

I'm a huge Fado fan and I'm hoping that one of the big names in Fado might be tempted to defend their title on home soil. Mariza, Ana Moura or Carminha would be terrific. I'm with you that Fado doesn't work well in fusion, but there was a very successful Fado/Flamenco fusion project a few years ago between fadista Dulce Pontes, and flamenco cantaora Estrella Morente. It's worth checking out. It's called Dulce/Estrella .

You're both grumpy old men with no romance in your old bones.

Aw c'mon, your enthusiasm for the annual non-descript music festival has made your ears clog up. :2razz:

That thing is as Fado-laced as they could get away with and that's what annoys me (or would, if I really cared.)

I share into the sentiment, something like that would be REALLY great (might even have me watching).

There's elements in both that can be found in the other (rule out the stomping dance in Flamenco) with some of the "coplas" in slower "cante jondo" often reminding me somewhat of Fado.

And vice versa.

They certainly share a melancholy ("Requiem" shows it quite nicely) that is often appealing (okay, it often appeals to me).

So I can see that fusion works in this case.

On the instrumental side flamenco will fuse with jazz elements better than Fado, IMO. But they have to stick to strings, brass kills that as well.

Wait til you get to the point where you're glad of having anything resembling marrow in your bones at all.

Romance will be the least of your worries.

I'm afraid I didn't care for that song at all, although I will admit the singer was quite scrumptious.

New to the whole thing, but sounded decidingly Euro to me...

I vote for Craggy Island's entry"
