America and Le Pen

The' 'American' 'inner' 'circle' 'of' 'France'''s' 'far-right' 'Marine' 'Le' 'Pen' '-' 'France' '24

It seems that
the American right is lining up behind Le Pen for Presidency, but not surprising.

Not the ordinary Right - it's the extreme right. You've missed a lot of their posts on this forum, hoping a holocaust denier and antisemite wins the French Presidency.

~ What does this mean for the US if Le Pen wins.

Don't really care.
As for what it means for Europe however, it'll be 4 horrible years, most places such extremists have won power recently they have shown themselves to be incompetent in power.

Well surveys released by Belgian media are indicating that Macron has won with over 60% so there would have to be quite a miracle or some massive error for Le Pen to win.

A French President's term limit is 5 years.

I know, I wouldn't expect her to last....

Spoiler - turnout is very low apparently. These are the conditions that would allow le Pen any kind of chance of winning.

Turn out is down yes, but "very low" is a bit much. For Le Pen to win, turnout would have to be down 40%.. it was 4% last I looked.

No results I think have been reported since polls only closed 10 minutes ago, but new outlets are calling it 65-35 for Macron.

Whew. Thank you France!

The exit polls tend to be pretty accurate... and even if they were off, they would have to be WAYYYYYY off for it to flip. Macron is the next president.

With Macron's victory on this side of the Pond the Con media and Trump will say that the election was fixed, that the win is 'fake news', and that Macron bused 3,000 people from Massachusetts to France to vote for Macron.

I am glad she lost, but I am still sad a holocaust denier got so close to winning.

You meaning to say he didn't?

Well, more than 30 pct behind isn't THAT close.;)

The over 25 pct abstentions (current count) say more about the conundrum that many French obviously saw themselves as facing.

Le Pen is toast.

For now. These parties hold on to leaders through defeat after defeat while the mainstream parties rid themselves of losing leaders. She'll be back in 5 years time, and 10 and 15...

Edit: Beg pardon, the abstention figure is totally incorrect.

Abstentions were actually at around 9 pct (record high), the round about 25 pct pertain to those that didn't even bother to vote.

Bad turnout altogether, certainly compared to the past.

Pure speculation but parties like hers have a tendency to eventually tear apart.

Not to the point of necessarily disappearing but by reappearing with a new face (and name) and a different set of people.

There most probably won't be any such move until after the parliamentary elections next month (and depending on the outcome for the Front) but the screw-up which Marine committed in the TV debate (gaining Macron extra points, it would appear) won't be forgotten that quickly.

Her niece (old Jean-Marie's granddaughter Marion Maréchal-Le Pen) has been finding mention for some time already.

Again pure speculation, yet the sop-throwing to the centre may be seen as having diluted party identity and drawing more drastic lines of difference to others may be the solution to some. Dangerous, of course, since that may backfire completely but the current line clearly holds little future promise.

I think you are speculating, Jean Marie held the party together for decades (since 1972).

As for more mainstream parties, the charge of eventually fall apart lies there too - Social Democrats, the Liberal party etc etc
