His university under siege, Michael Ignatieff is leading the charge against an increasingly autocratic Hungary

mainart.jpg

On Tuesday, the Hungarian parliament passed legislation that would effectively force CEU to close its doors.

Founded in 1991 by Hungarian-born billionaire George Soros, the university (accredited in both Hungary and the United States) was intended to help shepherd a formerly communist Hungary towards free institutions and liberal democracy.

Of course, this stands in noted opposition to Orban’s stated goal to turn Hungary into an “illiberal state” on the model of Turkey or Russia.

Another right-wing authoritarian has reared his head in Eastern Europe, flailing about paranoid delusions of grandeur by spewing fabulist conspiracy theory fantasies of an imaginary Leftist Global Shadow Government that wants to eliminate the political Right, and use it to justify a Rightward Authoritarian accumulation of government power. Now, the Hungarian leadership is actively using its power to silence political opponents, whether they be private citizens or not. The election of Trump as President has obviously been felt most prominently in Hungary and Turkey - Romania briefly experienced a nationalist authoritarian sentiment, but protesters mobilized and reminded the government there who they work for - but Turks and Hungarians are less likely to be so bold, as their respective governments most harshly crack down on dissent far greater than most countries in Europe. Here's to hoping the Hungarians take some lessons from their neighbors in Romania.

You're with that part, right?

You're with that part, right?

You don't beat these tyrants with the same political strategy that has been proven time and time again (with Bush, with Clinton, with Bush, with Obama, with the status quo establishment-stroking) to lose to the Far-Right. You want to run a Clinton 2.0 against Trump, for example? Go ahead, elect Trump for 8 years and see how much that ****s up the world because you can't stop defending a corrupt establishment and doing the same thing over and over and over again and expecting a different result...

So now, on top of that, you're criticizing me for calling out the Hungarian dictator than fancies himself a champion of the Authoritarian right-wing, and readily defends and cozies up to other dictators in Turkey and Russia... just wow.

Re: His university under siege, Michael Ignatieff is leading the charge against an in

Nationalist sentiments in Europe were going on BEFORE Trump came onto the scene.

So, in general, you're a huge fan of "flailing about paranoid delusions of grandeur by spewing fabulist conspiracy theory fantasies", right? I mean, that is basically your ideology is it not.

Yeah, but it certainly accelerated it. If anything the Orban and Erdogan regimes have mutated from merely being benign nationalism to right-wing ethno-authoritarianism and ultra-nationalism. I'm just waiting on one of these crazies to start praising the Iron ****ing Guard. I'll just throw my hands up at that point, even mouthing the words 'I ****ing told you so' would piss me off.

That guy, Ignatieff, is ex-leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. Not a very popular one- nobody really knew much about him. He seemed like he'd just parachuted in from Harvard.

Kind of old, but Bulgaria has also come under Putin/Orban's wing:

PM ORBÁN CONGRATULATES PM BORISOV AS RIGHT-WING PARTY WINS PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS IN BULGARIA

The new Iron Curtain - stretches through Serbia across the Turkish-Bulgarian border, encircling the Black Sea (isolating NATO Romania and Ukraine) - and it begins in Budapest.

I expect, any day now, to read of 'social unrest' in the Baltic countries.

Hungary has also fallen to 67 on the World Freedom Press Index.

Orban’s most loyal supporters are rewarded with commercial radio frequencies. “Sympathetic” media outlets get state advertising. Hungary’s second most important news portal, Origo, was taken over by an investor who is a “friend.”

While in Poland the goverment defend their crackdown on free media with the argument that they protect the people from bicyclists and vegetarians.

The Polish government’s efforts to defend the new law have only made things worse, creating an impression of amateurism. In a January 3rd interview with Bild, a German newspaper, Witold Waszczykowski, the foreign minister, condemned Poland’s previous centre-right government for pursuing a “left-wing” political agenda: “As if the world, in a Marxist fashion, were destined to evolve only in one direction—towards a new mix of cultures and races, a world of bicyclists and vegetarians.”

Erdogan's opposition face intimidation and harassment as they try to stop him in Turkish referendum

“I don’t want to live in a dictatorship. I don’t want Sharia law. I don’t want to have to wear the head scarf. I don’t want my country to become like Iran or Iraq,” said Tuana Okay, an 18-year-old student with a purple streak dyed in her hair.

Like many of her fellow Turks, Ms Okay is frightened about the referendum approaching on April 16, when President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is asking his citizens to approve sweeping constitutional changes that would vastly increase his own power.

Germany Refuses Turkey’s Request to Spy on Opponents of Erdogan

German officials acknowledged on Tuesday that they had rebuffed a request by the Turkish government to spy on its opponents in Germany, the latest strain to relations as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey pursues a referendum next month to expand his powers.

Tensions between Turkey and a range of European countries have mounted in recent weeks as the Turkish government, in effect, seeks to broaden the scope of its activities among Turks living in Europe, who can also cast votes in the referendum, which Mr. Erdogan is by no means assured of winning.

On Tuesday, one of Germany’s leading newspapers, Süddeutsche Zeitung, and two public service broadcasters reported that Turkey had handed over a list of more than 300 individuals and about 200 associations, schools and other groups among the three million Turks living in Germany that supposedly support the exiled cleric.

Just wow.

Dont these people have a right to make up their own minds and as well the responsibility to make sure their leaders honor it? America is doing a horrible job of monitoring and operating our political systems but I sure dont want others from some other place barging in trying to save America from itself anymore than I want someone to decide that I am being abused by my wife and trying to save me(That's an illustration only) when I never asked...

I guess that is my point, was Soros invited, or did he invite himself?

If he invited himself and they want him gone then for sure he should get gone, him and his projects.

Hungary and Hungarians are new to the "game of self-governance". The country is populated by the elderly who still have notions of the Communist regime that once governed them.

It will take a while for the youth of the nation to find their political footing, but once they do, the "old guard" will be truly retired - and where they should be. Far from the front pages of newspapers and TV.

But, this can only come about in a Real Democracy - that is, by the resolve of a nation electing liberal governments within a Social Democracy. Excerpt:
Social democracy is a political, social and economic ideology that supports economic and social interventions to promote social justice within the framework of a capitalist economy, as well as a policy regime involving a commitment to representative democracy, measures for income redistribution, and regulation of the economy in the general interest and welfare state provisions

You have to consider "these people" in order to answer your question.

Frankly, they are for the most part quite "new" to a democratic political environment. They really don't understand, perhaps, that it is the ballot-box that derives political control by elected officials. After all, for many of them, the balloting process is probably very new to them.

There are a number of the newer EU countries also having the same kind of problem. The elected heads of government are often some very strange people. Thankfully, the "separation of powers" (Executive and Legislative) seems to work. Whereas under communist regimes, there was only the Party that made all the decisions.

Romania is another such country, Slovakia quite likely another.

I remain nonetheless convinced that what is happening is due to a novitiate idea of "what democracy is and how it is practiced".

Of course, time will tell - democracy, when it works, is a learning process for any electorate ...

For the moment, Turkey has become a "basket case".

After the rule of the Generals under various military regimes, it is now the turn of "religious parties" to rule the roost. Neither know really how to run a democracy, since both believe in an ultimately Supreme Commander.

Tis a pity for Turkey. Really nice people (in my experience).

They deserve better ...

A government can be dictatorial without being a dictatorship. If it were merely right-wing, I wouldn't see articles or feel compelled to start topics about it.
