The shot was fired as the officer moved position on a roof about 100m (328ft) from a tent where Mr Hollande was speaking in the town of Villognon.
The bullet went through the canvas of the tent, where drinks were being made. It passed through a waiter's thigh and lodged in another person's calf. Link.

Hmmm. Seems a question of basic competence here, the simple act of shifting position while keeping your finger on the trigger is highly questionable act.

Exactly what is political about this?

Ah, you can't discuss as there's no muslims involved so your head is in a spin.

well, fret not - there's more to life in Europe than islam. Leave this thread to people who know, have been to or live in Europe please.

Yups.... but the "gun" is the thing that is dangerous.....

Not following the 4 fundamental firearm rules, not the fact that this guy had his finger in the trigger well, not the fact that the guy had it pointed in a direction that he probably shouldn't have, didnt have the weapon on safe while moving and shifting positions....

A HIGHLY Trained personnel, that still made a very STUPID mistake..... yet... its not the persons fault its the "scary" Gun's fault... right....so we need to ban more guns as they are dangerous.........

Great more stupid news......

That is not what I asked you. How does this affect anything political? Your commentary on me is not necessary.

It doesn't matter what you asked me, if you don't like a thread or you find the subject matter not to your taste then don't comment.

Do you sit complaining about shows on TV because you're too lazy to change TV channel?

So it is not political. It is more like tabloid news. Have fun.:lamo

Like I said, if you are incapable of joining the point of a thread, move on. Find yourself another thread to make all about yourself.

No one mentioned banning guns. Overreaction on your part. This is about skill sets and training or lack thereof by the sniper and the protection team.

French police sniper shoots two in error at Hollande speech - BBC News

"I hope it's nothing serious. I think not," Mr Hollande said as he paused his address to ask whether anyone had been hurt.

The president later visited the injured - the head waiter of a local hotel and an employee of a railway maintenance company.

One local report said the safety catch of the sniper's weapon was unlocked, allowing the gun to be discharged accidentally.

The marksman is based with a special protection unit in nearby Poitiers, officials said.

A judicial investigation has been launched.

Im sorry, I was being sarcastic, if you didnt catch that in my post.

I was trying to point out to the fact, that even a highly trained person, with the skill sets that they posse can still make simple FATAL errors that can endanger the lives of those around them. More so if a highly skilled person, does this, what makes the public think that an "Unskilled" person wont. A weapons works the exact same way in an adults hand, a childs hand, a skilled operator or a novice..... but it takes the SAME exact motion to initiate a firearm, intended or unintended.

4 Fundamentals of Firearm Safety

Treat every weapon as if it were loaded. ...
Never point a weapon at anything you don't intend to destroy. ...
Keep your trigger finger straight and off the trigger. ...
Keep your weapon on safe until you intend to fire.

HEHEH no problem, I tried to bold and even threw "stupid news" in there, OH well

YES YES I agree... Man or women, point being though.... you are right this dude is in deep trouble.......the "training" failures at this level is almost inexcusable. I question the necessity of having the rifle on fire at that point in general, was the person already in the intent to fire I would need more details. (armchair quarterbacking right now)

But point being...... All 4 fundamentals were violated at this point...... with these basic fundamentals..... in place..... if they followed even one of them, this situation could have been avoided...inexcusable.

A good friend of mine said, problem with humans is we make mistakes.
I am sure this is being passed down hard and fast within the French security services, local cities SWAT teams and such. Also being used by other countries what the repercussions are when you deviate from the basics.
I doubt he will remain as a sniper due to this incident.

Agreed..... But this is a huge huge BUT.....

we already have basic training..... then you go onto specialized training.....and then you reach a point where you are considered the Top in firing capabilities....HOW could this happen right? You are right though Humans are the factor and no matter how good you are you make mistakes, it happens.... This to me is my arguments in other "threads" here..... No matter how much restrictions and how well trained its not the firearm, its the human factor that must be examined.

I mean... in a very serious questions, HOW THE HELL did this person violate all 4 rules, rushing? drunk? stroke? I mean how could all 4 be by passed coherently?

Myself I cannot see a sniper changing position with the safety off. A slip, trip or a fall is quite.
An AD as we see in this case is the result.

Good shooters sometimes get complacent. They've "done it" so many times they stop thinking and, most importantly, forget that they're human and prone to making mistakes.

The sniper was on a rooftop 100m away, covering a speech by the French President!

French police sniper accidentally shoots two people during Francois Hollande speech | The Independent

The shot passed through a sunshade, a waiter's thigh, and lodged in a cafe customer's calf.

I did read somewhere that the sniper hopped up and down, but whether he hit himself or was just agitated wasn't clear.

Thanks, sorry was lazy too read.......

This is even more.... bother some..... with my experience (sorry dont want to go into much detail) but lets just say I can fairly weigh in on this.

1) They are providing PSD over there President at a Fairly Safe Event. not in a foreign coutry or hostile territory More so at a hostile event, It was an uveiling of a train...
2) Are the shooters allowed to be in a Red threat Level?, Weapon loaded, chambered, safety off and finger on the trigger? This seems a little high for a speech? Usually Yellow for these things, loaded, non chambered, safety on and finger off trigger.
3) usually counter snipers provide overwatch and security, @ 100m usually you have a direct diamond personal providing immediate security, WTF was a 100m sniper doing with a fully hot weapon in a crowded area.
4) This sniper was NOT engaging any threat from what I read.... so why was he at the Red level...

this is just failure to the max......... Good God, I hope this is not how these Security teams are being taught, because now I would be afraid of being a bystander at a high profile event getting a blue on blue...... this is just crazy.

Humans make mistakes, but this in my honest opinion not at this level, some random joe at the shooting range sure.... humans make mistakes.... this guy had a specific job in a non combat hostile situation....... an inauguration of a train, it was not an illegal pipeline running through a nature preserve....

Exactly. What was he /she doing armed, loaded and with safety off at a relatively safe event?

One person's thigh, another's calf, all of 'em hidden by a sunshade, all of it with just one round.

That's some shooting.

Let's hope he didn't train with one of these

:rofl
