It will take "years and years" before British workers are ready to fill the low-skilled jobs left by EU migrants, Brexit Secretary David Davis has conceded.

He said the UK was not about to "suddenly shut the door" on low-skilled EU migrants because UK nationals were not likely to take up the low-paid jobs in care, farming or hotels and restaurants for some time. Link.

Several things including the obvious one about how some of us foresaw this hole in the brexit argument but the main point for me is that the BBC is not carrying this story.

When the BBC has put out Brexit stories, they have also opened up a comments section quickly filled by angry Brexiteers telling us how biased the BBC is against Brexit and I suspect a lot of Russians posing as Brits. This is a Sky story and Sky are not obliged to make any concessions to public comment and then they are part of Murdoch's empire - an empire that has been very pro Brexit...

Hmmm................mebbe the BBC has no correspondent in Estonia?

So in other words small to medium size business owners complained :2razz:

An interesting development in my opinion, one that I expect will be played out in the US as well

All are all of those EU migrants that are there going to die suddenly?

Lotsa young people from all over Europe working in Britain. Maybe if all those young Brits have to come home from all over Europe they'll fill those jobs.

I don't know, but there are so many non Eu citizens working all over Europe that my experience cannot be so exotic. Allowing foreigners in on work permits is no real problem. Any country can let in as many as they want.

Except those Brits are not outside of Britain to do those kinds of jobs, most likely either studying at university or in high-skill jobs. They are not going to come home and work those jobs.

Where the argument that Davis presents is pertinent, it's also a step wrt to the more howling factions of Brexiteers (get dem furrinners out quick) that it can't be done that easily without Brits in the EU having to bear the consequences.

Of course that's not what Davis is saying but if May and her bunch actually go hard Brexit as she says, and give every non-Brit in the UK the chop, the EU will have no other recourse but to do the same to Brits in the EU. Alone the Eastern European members will see to that.

May and her minions have really backed themselves into a corner over the issue of abolishing free movement to (and from) the UK and, subsequently, the EU may find itself in the same dilemma.

A number of reports, organisations and individuals have made the point that whatever the overall outcome of Brexit, for British agriculture it's going to be disastrous: loss of markets; new tariffs; los of EU subsidies; devalued pound and immigration controls dissuading foreign workers from choosing the EU. British farmers will be losing markets and workers simultaneously and everyone in British agriculture seems very depressed right now.

The Prime Minister has consistently said the UK wants to continue to attract talent, but this has focused on the highly skilled workers in industries such as finance and technology - not careworkers, fruit pickers and barristas.

The Brexit negotiations might take 10 years and the UK government has plenty of time to decide on who's going to stay. This Australian immigration model will never going to work in the UK and many highly skilled Asian migrants are unemployed because Britain does not have Affirmative Action. Britain will need a lot of low-skilled European workers in some sectors and the point is that the government can impose a limit on low-skilled migrations from Eastern Europe after Brexit. Polish careworkers and fruit pickers should be able to stay as long as they are needed by their respective industries and they should be given work permits according to the demand for labour in a specific industry.

Even then, the UK has the same unemployment rate as the US which is 4.8

~ if May and her bunch actually go hard Brexit as she says ~

Hard to imagine any other option if she is going to placate the hard Brexit faction.

Nearly all small to medium sized business owners I saw interviewed during the referendum and about 80% of employees (especially in the multinational companies) all wanted Brexit. Some even acknowledging the risks to their own jobs.

~Allowing foreigners in on work permits is no real problem

Good point, however many Brexiteers wanted a cut in immigration - that was their point. They poo-pooed that industry needed workers (and markets)

No it will take 2 years.

That would be going against Brexit. Brexit meant that no Poles or Romanians could enter the UK.

Where did it say no Poles or Romanians could enter after Brexit?

Wrong. It meant taking back control from Brussels.

Where did it say no Poles or Romanians could enter after Brexit?

That was the main reason for Brexit for a vast majority of Brits.. to control immigration and the main "hated group" there was Poles and Romanians (and Bulgarians). So after a Brexit, it is expected that the UK will ban as man Poles, Romanians and Bulgarians as possible, as they are part of the undesirable group of immigrants.

Take what control back from Brussels?

And regardless, you cant take back that supposed control before you leave.. in 2 years time.

Again, where does it say that? Otherwise, it's your personal bias and opinion.

MiloY is one of them. I'm looking forward to the Natural Born Brit that takes his place.

I believe control over immigration (primarily eastern european) was one of the main drivers for support for Brexit (along with curved bananas). If that actually means a cut or elimination of eastern european workers post Brexit remains to be seen

I'm not disputing any of that. But that's a million miles from the BS statement Pete said. And he liked your post :( The guy is the worst kind of what is totally **** with this forum.

The conservative mission to shut the BBC down is moving forward. The changes in emphasis and slant have not escaped my notice and I suspect that the next charter will be another nail in it's coffin as a truly independent media source.

I don't expect any other forms of government to reverse this either since lust for power will make a willing tool too hard to leave alone.
