Jamshid Piruz, 35, lashed out at constables Jessica Chick and Stuart Young with a claw hammer during a West Sussex break-in on 7 January 2016.

Piruz was previously jailed in the Netherlands for killing a woman.

The court heard that after arriving in Britain in December 2015 to visit relatives, Afghan-born Dutch citizen Piruz missed his return flight home from Gatwick Airport on 4 January, 2016.

Jamshid Piruz jailed for 'horror' hammer attack on police - BBC News

Mr Piruz was convicted of murdering a woman in the Netherlands, and only required to serve 6 years in prison.

The link contains video of Piruz attacking police with a hammer. They tried to use their tasers on him, but they had no effect, so Piruz rushed them, assaulting several police.

Europe appears to be doing a horrible job at protecting its citizens from people who would do them harm. I earnestly hope for better, for my country (USA) and for Europe.

And your point of debate on this is....?

If all you want to do is express your hopes and prayers, wouldn't lighting a candle in the church work better?

Immigration polices need to change.

If all you want to do is express your hopes and prayers, wouldn't lighting a candle in the church work better?

Condolences are routinely offered on threads that contain tragedy. The Quebec mosque shooting for instance.

Immigration polices need to change.
Then why didn't you make any such proposal?

You made no statement of condolence to anyone. You expressed a desire for 'better', whatever that means. Why didn't you express your condolences to the families of the victims of the Quebec shooting? And why bring that up here when it was a shooting by a white supremacist against Muslims? Are you drawing parallels with this case?

Then why didn't you make any such proposal?

I just did, thanks for reminding me. I'm open to discuss.

You made no statement of condolence to anyone.

Alas, you are correct. Here, I'll offer one;

Dear Europe,
I'm sorry that you've been lied to about many things. I'm sorry that certain groups have pressured you into accepting immigration from parts of the world that are incapable of assimilating to your culture at best, and plotting to destroy your culture at worst. I'm sorry that this failed experiment killed your countrymen and women in Paris, Brussels, Madrid, London, Berlin, Freiburg, the Netherlands, etc, etc.

But I'm most sorry for you if you don't wake up now and regain the sense that prior generations of your people had.

I offered RIP to those who died, called the killer a stupid coward.. Why don't you read what I said before you attempt to tell me what I said?

No.

I thought liberal's foolproof vetting process was supposed to to prevent people like this from reaching europe or the United States

I'm sure everyone is bowled over by the sincerity of your condolences.

Honestly, what a scummy, bigoted, hypocritical response to a horrible tragedy.

No vetting process is foolproof, and no one has ever claimed to have achieved one. Your vetting processes in the States seems to be significantly less than foolproof too. Rather than goading and crowing at the problems we all face, pretending your systems are perfect, we'd be better working on how to solve issues, rather than sneering at the victims of our modern ****ed-up world.

Keeping it classy, I see.

I wouldn't offer that sort of thing at any funeral I've ever attended if I were you. Someone in the crowd of those grieving might misappropriate a shovel away from its intended use.

So, what is your opinion of Trump's temporary ban on 7 specific countries? If vetting cannot be, as you freely admit, foolproof, then it is smart to do the next best things in the absence of such a system... correct?? And maybe go even further?

I'd argue that instead of making gestures he should address the issue. Not a single terrorist incident in the USA has been carried out by nationals of any of those 7 countries. On the other hand, the US has suffered attacks from nationals of the UK, Guyana, Trinidad, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Haiti, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, and the UAE have all participated in plots or actual attacks on the USA. Since those 7 countries clearly don't pose as great a threat as many, many others the world is left to consider what other motives Trump might have for making this particular ban. Thus far he really hasn't done anything to convince the rest of the world of his good intentions or to allay our fears that he may be intent on setting the world on fire.

I did point out that our vetting is no better than yours.

Which is why I want no more refugees and far fewer legal immigrants admitted to my country

Since no vetting process can possibly be perfect I guess that means you are opposed to helping refugees in principle. I am not and I'm happy that the countries of Europe recognise that despite the risks there is a moral imperative to help those who cannot help themselves. Does that make us larger targets for the malevolent and violent? Yes, it does. Doing the right thing often comes with a price.

You study world events enough to know what is going on.

1. ISIS you will remember, has made threats of using the cover of refugees to import terrorists into my country.

2. Obama is the one responsible for identifying the nations on the list of which you speak. This, with rational opponents, should have ameliorated much of the instantaneous criticism... , but with the left it doesn't really matter they are going to be against it. So, even if it didn't stop the harping, and we knew it would not, it was a nod in your direction and this just proves no matter what he does it will be automatically and roundly criticized by the left and its media. And this is just the beginning, more to come.

3. Too many in these war torn countries are wanting to bring in too many numbers and they are just not able to be vetted sufficiently. Other countries might have less of a problem, one could easily surmise, seeing as they have intact governments that ostensibly have police, arrest, surveillance, etc... records to draw upon.

4. So, with the other nations you named, are you suggesting we expand the ban?

Other motives of Trump huh? How about give me a list... with some supporting evidence, please.

And it really is too much that you think that Trump, or we Americans, have to "convince the rest of the world" and allay your fears. How about getting up off your social spending asses and do the minimum, like paying your dues in NATO? Germany pays about half of what it owes, France 3/4s, blah blah blah while we spend almost twice what we all agreed upon. Why don't you folks allay OUR fears that all you will really do is get yourselves in trouble again and then we have to come bail your asses out again. that and the regular sitting on your thumbs while we do most that needs done. Nobody, especially NATO itself, denies it.

And then you folks want to complain, America this [often bad] America that [also bad]. Ever think that might become a bit tedious to the American ear after 70 plus years of us, the US, doing almost ALL the heavy lifting ALL the time?

Tragedy that could have been avoided. But gutless politicians are seldom attacked with hammers.

Over the last 20 years in the US thousands of people have died from gunshot wounds. Your country is doing a terrible job.

No.
Dear America.
Stop shooting each other.

Time to stop buying it then, we would be better off and so would they forcing them to help themselves.

I agree. We need to determine why we're regressing into violence and primalism, despite 50 years of moving to the left politically. Maybe the 2 are related.
Oh, I dunno. Considering that in the period from 1992 to 2011 (right now can't find any "robust" figures from there on) the number of homicides in which firearms were used, decreased by 49 pct.

Which doesn't mean that the number of homicide victims dying from gunshots decrased. But it remained stable in that period.

https://www.bjs.gov/index.cfm?ty=pbdetail&iid=4863

There's a graph available that shows use of handguns in homicides to have peaked in 1993 (just as Clinton took office) and to have fallen significantly by 2001 (when he left), to then rise again, albeit nowhere near to the peak of 1993.

But I'm not linking to it here since, for one thing, I'm not going to engage in partisan hackery based on speculations and, for another thing, do not wish to encourage anybody to confuse correlation with causation.

Fact is that homicides in the US show a downward trend and have been showing it for decades (even the CNN statistics linked to in the post you quote show that).

So, leaving aside that the use of handguns in homicides has remained pretty stable, "regression into violence and primalism" doesn't seem to be a description all that apt. The opposite would apply.

That people in other countries shoot each other less often is hardly relevant to assessing US trends. Just like there being countries where people shoot each other FAR MORE often is not relevant in that context.

Odd that in Liverpool, kids run around with knives and stabbings occur every 16 seconds, innit?
They run around with knives here as well (us Spanish are all knife artists anyway, donchaknow?), but not near my house they don't.

When I moved here I spread the word that the new neighbors were one Mr. Smith and one Mrs. Wesson.

Time to stop buying it then, we would be better off and so would they forcing them to help themselves.
I can just picture the likes of you suddenly finding themselves in a situation of 24/7 peril for their lives, simply loving somebody coming along and forcing you to help yourself. With you feeling better off.

But then you haven't the slightest clue what being in a war theatre entails, so this kind of prattle doesn't really deserve much further address.
