Turkey is investigating 10,000 people on suspicion of using social media to support terrorism, its interior ministry has said.

They are accused of insulting government officials online, or what the ministry called "terror-related activity" on the internet.

The ministry said the fight against terrorism was being carried out "with determination" on social media.

The authorities have held 3,710 people for questioning in the last six months.

Of those, 1,656 have been formally arrested and 84 are still being questioned.

To our Turkish posters/readers, be careful.
Should the US try to deploy diplomacy to dissuade human rights abuses here?

Thoughts?

I don't see what we could achieve there right now. Erdogan now seems to be fixed on an overriding goal established after having been rejected by Europe.
He wants to establish an autocracy.

I'm not advocating this, but about the only thing that will change Erdogan's attitude is a military coup that takes him out of power.

Judging from what I have read that's pretty much what he has now.

I'm no fan of Erdogan. He's about as trustworthy as Saudi Arabia. I didn't like the shooting down of the Russian aircraft. I didn't like Turkey marketing the Daesh/ISIS oil from Syria and Iraq. I don't lke seeing Turkish troops in both Iraq and Syria. I abhor the fact that Turkey is a NATO member. Turkey will be the stumbling block is solving the Syria/Iraq/ISIS confrontation. I have no respect for any Nation that supports the terrorists. That includes USA support of al Qeda/Nusra Front/al Sham/terrorists. The USA seems to be a rogue agent in the Middle East and seems to think it is OK. They must not be counting the bodies.

It would certainly take some strong medicine and mucho treasure.

One can argue that point, certainly. The path from democracy to dictatorship is fluid and it is a matter of opinion, where on the on the multifactoral continuum the threshold is.

Erdogan is simply their Donald Trump

I don't think so, but Trump bares watching. He is a known unknown and therefore quite a risk in that job. Erdogan is a known known and therefore reasonably well calculable.

Just remember the words of Omar:
