[h=1]Sky and 21st Century Fox agree £18.5bn takeover deal[/h]
Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox will pay £11.7bn for the 61% stake it does not already own.
Sky shareholders will receive £10.75 in cash for each share, valuing the entire company at £18.5bn.
The deal comes amid concerns that Rupert Murdoch, who also owns the Sun and the Times newspapers, will have excessive influence over UK media. Link.

This subject of Murdoch's continued attempts to take over Sky has come up before on the Europe forum but it seems like Murdoch finally has his prize.

James Murdoch, Rupert Murdoch's son, is both chairman of Sky and chief executive of Fox.

Ah well, looms like Murdoch did everything he could to make sure this takeover was going to happen. My only wish is that Ofcom watch their broadcasts even more closely than before - impartial reporting is a cornerstone of our broadcast media.

The problem is much larger in non anglophone countries, where people are more or less dependent on regional language media. This is especially bad for democracies where state controlled media are the main purveyors of news and opinions.

He already had his hands on SKY. It only takes between 5% and 10% to have tacit control over a corporation's board and operations. He owned 39% of SKY before this deal, now he owns it all.

~ now he owns it all.

The deal could still be prevented by the media regulator but even so - if the deal goes ahead, I hope the regulator* enforces impartial reporting on TV.

*Newspapers are allowed to be partial and one sided but Murdoch and his son have been pushing to be allowed to broadcast partisan TV news reports.

You can still get BBC World Service in different languages around the world - I remember a period when revolutionaries like Nelson Mandela used to say the only accurate reports they could get in their parts of the world was listening to World Service radio.

Would be ironic if the EU blocked it :)

Monopolies legislation?

Basically.. doubt it would happen, as the monopoly is still very regional and local. He only has a dominating position in Germany and UK.. and France.. not sure there. Rest of Europe naw.. But it would be ironic.

No, sadly this fight has to be done in the UK and with the Tory party in power... he will win his prize and the British consumer will get hurt on so many levels. He will then push for the handicapping the BBC and getting rid of Ofcom, so that he can push his political agenda through Sky News.

I see nothing that changes his "unfit person" status in the intervening years.

I seem to remember the EU approved the previous deals but in terms of him knocking over the impartial news framework I disagree. It's not just the BBC and Ofcom but Channel 4 and ITV that pride themselves on impartial news broadcasting.

Some would like a Fox type channel with very one sided broadcasts but most of us wouldn't stand for it.

Kill your television.

Kill your television.

I don't watch much TV but I would be affected by any changes to law that allowed Murdoch to broadcast biased and uninformed news reports on TV. I'm just using what I see in other countries where companies like Fox etc can broadcast one sided news reports without any right of reply.

The good thing where I live is that neither Fox nor any of Murdoch's channels are subscription free. Neatly relieving me from having to throw back out of the window that which never made it in.

CNN is free but I'm just as free to ignore it.

Just makes you realise how bad news TV can be.
