Paris (AFP) - Two Qatari women were held up on a Paris motorway and robbed of valuables worth more than five million euros ($5.3 million) in the latest heist targeting wealthy visitors to the French capital.

The women, in their sixties, had just left Le Bourget airport northeast of the capital on Monday when their chauffeur-driven Bentley was held up by two masked men who sprayed them with tear gas, a police source said Tuesday.

The robbers stole "everything in the vehicle: jewels, clothes, luggage", the source said.

Last month, American reality TV star Kim Kardashian was tied up and robbed at gunpoint of $10 million in jewels in a luxury apartment in the heart of Paris.

In another incident, Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat was punched in the face and sprayed with tear gas by three masked men in an upmarket area of Paris this month.

The incidents have done little to help efforts by the government to coax tourists back to France in the wake of the November 2015 jihadist attacks in which 130 people died, followed by the Bastille Day truck massacre in southern city Nice that killed 86.

Tourism appears to be down in Paris, with all the crime stories of the past 2 years. How are these robbers able to locate and target wealthy people so easily and get away with it?

My thoughts revolve around the fact that there were two women moving around with the equivalent of 100 years worth of annual wages on their persons to be robbed of.

Hard to feel either concern or much sympathy for that kind of example; albeit I don't condone criminality. :coffeepap:

I could post stories about all the crime done against regular people, but no one would read it.

The perps knew who they were robbing and, more importantly, the size of the loot.

Advance insider information.

Yeah, in Qatar this wouldn't have happened.

Even where they DO allow women to drive, unlike in Saudi.

Well it does.. just does not get out in the media as in France and the rest of the western world :) Remember this is bad news for France and Christianity, but when it happens in places like Qatar, you cant have that kind of information get out to the masses... Lived in the region for over a decade and some of the **** that went on, and never was covered in the media. I remember an assassination attempt in Saudi Arabia. The city was on lock down, so we could not avoid not hearing about it, but it was never really covered in the media.. locally and certainly not internationally. The only time they cant hide it, is when too many are involved... like the riots in Mecca and such.

Yeah, I still got to hear stuff, both in the Emirates and in Saudi. But reports on robbery were either effectively quelled or it wasn't the norm. Basically the understanding was that if you want to rob a rich sheikh or his kin, do it outside of Wahhabi jurisdiction and you stand a chance of keeping your limbs, if you get caught. That would include the head (simple theft and robbery are viewed very much differently).

Attempts to knock off the local kingpin and his clan were likely to surface more easily, since, as you say, there was usually not a big enough lid.

Like the seizure of Masjid al Haram (Mecca mosque) was all over the international news to such a point already, that the Saudis finally decided they might as well report on it as well. They kept the issue of French assistance (whatever extent that amounted to) in ending the siege to themselves though.

I take it then that you habitually carry 5 milion Euros with you, whenever you ride in your Bentley?
Did they not just come from the airport, meaning they are rich, they have been travelling and they may have valuables, and one little slip of the tongue and the wrong people know about what you are carrying. What kind of idiot travels with that much in value with them, good grief if you are carrying that much spend a couple of bucks and hire some professional security.

No, I leave in safely where it is, and the Bentley only gets driven on Sundays.

That's why I think the Bentley wasn't so much a giveaway but that the perps had inside knowledge as to the cash.

Well of course they did, and why no security?

Especially since our main international airport is located in a Muslim area where many workers are Muslims, and so are most of criminal networks. The airport must therefore be an excellent intelligence source for criminality.

If you'd pay some attention to threads (your lack of focus again) you'd have noticed that the victims were coming from Le Bourget airport.

Which serves business jets.

Actually hold-up heists are not uncommon on that part of the motorway. It leads to both CDG airport (main international) and Le Bourget. The latter is exclusively for business jets and the two Qatari women were coming from there when they were robbed.

Wealthy foreigners in luxury cars are common targets on that stretch since they often also carry large amounts of cash (this is not the first such incident).

So perhaps "inside knowledge" consisted merely of the understanding that one might as well hit the most promising potential. Like breaking into a luxury hotel may possibly get you better returns than hitting a tourist shack.

Roissy and Le Bourget are very close (<15min), both in Muslim areas. They have many synergies, many common subcontractors, and they are encompassed as a single entity at some administrative levels (security, territory, ...).

Correct, and yes they may have just gotten lucky, Very Lucky.

Yeah, my Rolls gets its whirl Saturdays. Rest of the week is Ferrari time.

On account of owning those two I have, of course, no money at all any more.

Hey now it is your money, throw it at whatever you want. Ok, with the little lady's permission of-course, as always.

They get lucky on that stretch of road all the time.

Saudi Prince, French furniture company magnate, etc. all been "done" there. But this one looks like the jackpot so far, the others having lost considerably less.
