Buckingham Palace to undergo 'essential' £370m refurbishment

Strictly speaking the Palace belongs to the Crown estates on behalf of the nation, and not the Queen herself. It's an unhappy coincidence to put it mildly, that the repair estimate (some of the electrical wiring is over 60 years old) is similar to the lying brexiteer promises regarding properly funding the NHS. Ten years of imposed austerity have done little to deny the conclusion by many that it's being done at the expense of the poorest in society.

It's being done, because it 'needs to be done'. To not do it now, would put at risk a national asset.

While cutting disability benefits, and declaring terminally ill people fit for work....

I dont really have a bone to pick with this but I am curious as to what the locals think. How popular is the monarchy in the UK? Are they a cash drain or does the income they generate for the country more than make up for their expenses?

Well the typical defence of the monarchy is that they get most of their money from their lands (which they got from us by raping and pillaging) so if this is the case then surely they have the resources to refurbish the palace themselves? maybe sell one of the others? Im sure they can get by somehow.

Also why bother with central heating when you have big open fires in every room?

I agree with many of my esteemed colleagues, anyone who knows anything about the monarchy knows Buckingham palace is in a state, and has been for some time actually, with that estimate and the size of the building, it means they're actually low balling it and they're not touching on everything.

As far as love for the monarchy itself, that's always been down to the monarch themselves, Elizabeth II and her Father are seen as stalwart public servants and Elizabeth despite having had some low moments, is not likely to ever have another.

What happens after is key though, people really, really don't like Charles and I think we'll see republicans gaining some traction during his reign, but not enough to bring the house down.

If the past few centuries are anything to go by if he turns out to be a problem then parliament will just replace him with someone else, as was the case with Edward VIII

TBH the last german born royal was Victoria's husband Albert.

Royals or no Royals we would be paying for the restoration anyway.

I never knew the German lady had that much power. ;)
The queen was born in Mayfair, London. How is she German?
