At the Stade de France, the son of victim Manuel Dias, the single person killed there, spoke on behalf of his Portuguese-born father, saying he had been "proof that integration is possible".

"Long live tolerance, long live intelligence, long live France," he said.

But other bereaved relatives chose to stay away from the ceremonies, like Patrick Jardin, who lost his daughter Nathalie at the Bataclan, and said he still felt an "anger that will never leave me".

As he prepared to visit his daughter's grave after a memorial Mass, he told France Bleu radio (in French) the ceremonies were "pointless".

"You don't reply to Kalashnikovs with candles," he said, calling for "measures to make sure it can't happen again".

France's state of emergency imposed after last year's terror attacks in Paris is likely to be extended, Prime Minister Manuel Valls has told the BBC. He said the measures were needed to protect democracy.

France appears to be in a constant state of emergency which hasn't been seen since World War Two. Is immigration really working out well in France if the people now live as if they're permanently at war with an enemy who will emerge from their own citizenry?

Paris attacks: France state of emergency to be extended - PM Valls - BBC News

I find it interesting that last year tons of media were running stories that the French Jews were voting with their feet, many had left to Israel and a lot more were on the way because Europe was not safe anymore was the claim, packed in with a couple of condensed tales of a few individual people who said they they were packing....

Turns out to be wrong.

Or a lie.

Sharp Drop in French Jews’ immigration to Israel, Report – Jewish Business News

I am thinking that this was some herd journalism.

Not at all, the phenomenon is real. Let me put the numbers in perspective: we have 1% of Jews in France, so let's say 700k.

* 1,1% of French Jews left the country for Israel in 2015. More to other destinations.
* 0.65% of French Jews left the country for Israel in 2016 so far. More to other destinations.
* 0.3% of French non-Jews leave the country every year. Most come back a few years later. There has been no spike in 2015.

In 2016 the rabbi of Marseilles asked the French Jews who still wear the kippah to stop doing so, because it has become too dangerous. In 2012 a Muslim entered a Jewish school and shot kids. One of them was a little girl he shot at point blank, right in the face, eyes to eyes.

As for the Jewish vote, let's just say that there is a fast rise of Jewish figures on the far-right or "very-right". Many of our notorious and respected Islamocritics are actually Jews since they enjoy the minorities' ethical free pass and are freer to speak than others.

It isn't that cut'n dried where Jews leaving France are concerned

But while violence against Jews is often identified as the major driver of French aliyah, many immigrants cite a broader mix of reasons for choosing to leave, including Zionist sentiment and alienation from an adamantly secularist society increasingly intolerant of the religiously devout.

Benhaim cites as evidence the fact that a majority of French Jewish emigres come from middle- and upper-class areas with little anti-Semitism. Only 15 percent are from poor areas with large Muslim populations and a high incidence of anti-Jewish attacks – a result, Benhaim said, of a reluctance to forego France’s generous social welfare benefits.

“Those who leave can afford to let go of the French welfare system,” Benhaim said. “Mostly they live where anti-Semitic attacks are relatively rare, and in many cases, anti-Semitism is not a primary catalyst for moving but a sort of a background presence.”

Of course that takes nothing away from the fact that the recent terrorist attacks give cause for worry, nor from the fact that part of the Hebdo attack was specifically directed at a kosher supermarket.

Nevertheless Jews were not specifically targeted as the main group in the attacks that followed in Paris (again) and Nice.

Herds like to report all sorts of rubbish about Jews leaving Europe and that is often repeated here on this forum. Thanks for posting something that helps refute the chorus some of us have to combat almost daily.

The article was talking about a drop in 2016, which means there were more earlier.

N'est-ce pas?

Gotta rush but if you have proof of earlier numbers I'd have a look at them. Will return later

1% per year going it Israel does not seem like either a lot or a problem to me.

Am I supposed to be missing something?

It would halve the Jewish population in a half-century, this is significant. Previously the Jewish population was on the rise.

Besides their emigration rate is to 4 times higher than the rest of the population, which is significant. Among the causes, one inevitably finds the antisemitism of Muslims.

When a foreign country at war looks safer than your home country at peace, there is a significant problem.

Hebdo happened at the start of 2015?

Reported anti-Semitic hate crimes in France have more than doubled from 423 in 2014 to 851 in 2015, according to numbers cited in the report “Breaking the Cycle of Violence: Countering Antisemitism and Extremism in France” released Jan. 7 by the group Human Rights First and authored by Corke.

“These incidents are increasingly violent,” the report stated.

You should find the article heartwarming since they try to blame the National Front first for the hate crimes. Somehow I'm skeptical.

Yeah, January. Why do you ask?

FN's activities will hardly have served to defuse anything but I share the skepticism when it comes to blaming everything wrt jihadist attacks on FN.

One need remember though that FN has a history of anti-semitism, even where Marine raised hell and high water to get that removed and give the party a better image.

But Jewish skepticism remains on the premise that leopards don't change their spots and frankly I don't blame those French Jews holding that stance.
