demanding EU leaders take a firm line with Russian President Vladimir Putin....

I haven't read the paper, but it was reported that the activities of Assad were war crimes and that supporting them must be punished. It would surprise me, if the words used were the legal terms. That would make it nearly impossible to trade with Russia and Assad with his entourage could hardly be kept protected from court indictment in The Hague.
 
Making Russia even more dependent upon their cooperation with China will work against our interests long term, but it is not a given that the EU elite are bright enough to know this.

Syria is a lost cause, just like Ukraine, we never even had a viable plan, for either one.

We should STFU, get on with things that we have the power to change.
