UK Business pleads against hard brexit

German Auto Industry warning if we have Hard Brexit.

German carmakers exported 810,000 cars to Britain last year, more than to any other country in the world, while three-quarters of the 1.6 million cars built in Britain in 2015 were exported, most to the European Union, Wissman said.

One of the reasons the Brexit camp felt we would be able to negotiate a deal - sales of cars from Germany to the UK are Germany's highest in the world - this would be an interesting sidenote except that livelihoods are concerned.

What Wissmann actually warns of (most of all, that is) is that production could move South (from Britain). For Britain that could mean literally "South" in more ways than just geographical.

There's no doubt that losing the UK market (or having hindered access to it) would entail losses (to all), but the overall EU market is far more important to German car producers than the UK is. 810,000 sold to Britain DOES make it the country with the highest number but one need see that Europe alone accounts for 2,75 million (in 2015) of the 4,4 million world wide.

All that said, a hard Brexit will hurt everyone in the car industry.
