For the first time since the end of the Cold War, the German government plans to tell citizens to stockpile food and water in case of an attack or catastrophe, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung newspaper reported on Sunday.

Germany is currently on high alert after two Islamist attacks and a shooting rampage by a mentally unstable teenager last month. Berlin announced measures earlier this month to spend considerably more on its police and security forces and to create a special unit to counter cyber crime and terrorism.

"The population will be obliged to hold an individual supply of food for ten days," the newspaper quoted the government's "Concept for Civil Defence" - which has been prepared by the Interior Ministry - as saying.

They are finally waking up and seeing the error of their ways....of Merkel's ways!

"Obliged"? Does that mean "required" in this case?

Regardless of where you are or what possible dangers there may be out there, having a backup supply of food, water, and other essentials is just a good idea.

There are a number of discomforting signs of populist scare mongering by the German authorities to gain votes and some activities that look uncomfortably like preparation for controlling civil unrest.

BS.

Holding stockpiles is a recommendation and nothing more.

Sensible in fact, looking at past occurrences where individual communities were cut off for days from outside aid due to floods, blizzards etc.

As far as the scare-mongering is concerned that another poster addresses in what's getting to look like habitual snipe, the concept isn't new and the last plans have been in place since 1989. They've now merely been upgraded and the news, pressed for substance in the habitual German "summer news shortage", is doing its usual thing of "much to do about nothing".

I used to live in Germany for years and where it was convenient in the cities to be able to nip around the block for the forgotten bottle of milk, friends of mine that lived in the countryside could usually keep going for a month anyway.

Where I am now I'm in similar position in that I shop max. twice a month, preferably once.

Not in fear of impending doom but because I can't be bothered to do it more often on account of having to drive 50 km each time.

Apart from which I hate shopping.

Fully agree!

Well, the liberals, being the Utopians that they are, don't want to hear anything that's doom and gloom, so they will disagree. ;) But I agree......as prep for massive civil unrest. It's coming...

Now don't get all butt hurt.....anything is possible.

For the government to give an open instruction such as that.......what are the chances that their intelligence knows of an imminent attack?
It's possible that down-playing the seriousness of it (by citing disasters along with attacks), is a strategic attempt to prevent any panic that would make people empty the shelves in a matter of hours!

Poisoning water supply could cripple a town or a city for who knows how long.
When it comes to attacks, anything is possible now. Disaster can be man-made.

Having 2 weeks supply of food is a standard advice in case of disasters.

Anything is possible.

A such it is also possible that someone as little informed on Europe in general and Germany in particular as you appear to be, will be completely lost upon entry here.

Unless, of course, you're capable of contributing something of more substance .

They simply hide the real reason: the eurozone has seeded the conditions for a world-class banking crisis and the German banks are at the forefront, with Deutsche Bank having lost more than half of its value since the start of the year.

Basically they are afraid that, soon, businesses could no longer pay their bills, supply chains would be disrupted, the supermarkets' shelves would be empty, many businesses would go bankrupt, our savings would evaporate. Thanks Europe! It is so fortunate that no one listened at the evil populists who opposed the euro currency, and voters instead favored so competent leaders against the opinions of economists.

You sure you're in the right forum?

Cuz conspiracy is just down the hall, last door on the left.

A conspiracy?! Just inform yourself.

No serious financial analyst, informed politician or economic journalist would deny that Europe may soon face a major banking crisis and bank runs, which is the scenario I just described.

So what do you think is the more plausible?
a) The German government are idiots who decided for no reason to scare their citizens?
b) They fear a war with Russia by the end of the year?
c) They fear ISIS will rob German supermarkets of food during a night?
d) They fear a banking crisis that everyone a bit informed knows is possible, but cannot mention it because it would cause a bank run and may trigger the crisis?

Sounds more like a response to an escalation with russia rather than a terrorist group

I knew this since the early 70's when I became a survivalist. Still am.

One thing I did not bargain for was the violent resistance I would get from other people for doing it. Go figure.

One guy blew a gasket when he found out in an discussion, I was making preparations for my family.

"You are just going to die"!...We ALL are! You are wasting your time!

OK, then what plans are YOU making for my family in case things go to hell?

None! Why should I!

Exactly, then shut up. I care for my family and what you do or do not do with yours is your business, but DO NOT tell me what I can do with mine.

That was met with more emotional rants about the futility of it all. It sounded more like he was trying to convince himself, rather than argue with me.

Really emotional too. It was pretty strange at how angry he got once he found out I was a survivalist.

Nothing personal, there's simply stuff I don't respond to after a pretty brief period.
