Brexit voters claim credit for UK Olympic games success

Though, I am sure it will be short lived with China moving ahead again, the UK showing rather surprising. I would have expected Germany to outperform GB given its larger population.

Population does not matter per say.. it is commitment by the "system" to produce athletes. In the US you have your "bribe" system, where kids are getting scholarships based on how good they are in sports, but in the rest of the world you have a system of government spending and grassroots organisations that does this. And it all depends on the organisation and the commitment of government.

Take football. The FA is the organisation in England that deals with that. Their commitment the last 40 years has been absolutely pathetic. No coordination and total focus on top tier football.. more money the better. In the mean time English born players have become a rarity and the English national team has suffered.

Now look at Spain or Germany. They copied the succesful Ajax system and have made a "football nursery", but this started 20 years ago. They have been quite succesful by any standards. They did it with a specific plan, and 100% commitment. A good example is the German national football team.. lets take the center-back position (defender). There are multiple quality players for these positions, and more coming up the ranks. Look at the English team.. you can barely find quality players to fill the spots.

Of course football is a big sport, so why are Brits suddenly doing great in gymnastics? Because the British Gymnastic organisation started a plan as soon as London won the 2012 Olympics. This was funded by lottery money and had government back as well. It was a national pride issue, because Britain could not be low on the medals table at their own Olympics. This worked and that legacy continues today.

Saying that, the UK has always been "big" in some sports.. like rowing and some track and field events. This is historical. What is new, is that they are now competitive in other sports like cycling and tennis. Of course the key is to continue the success past today.. who is the next Andy Murray? Or new Froome in cycling? This comes down to the organisations they are part off and their ability to keep it going... not easy.. just ask the Swedes. They use to dominate tennis.. when was the last time you heard of a top Swedish tennis star?

But all this has absolutely nothing to do with Brexit.. lol. In fact one could claim easily that the EU is the reason for at least some of the medals.. as some of the sporting organisations training centres have been funded by... EU regional aide.

I find most astounding that anyone should waste so much time worrying the Brexit comment.

Eh, who cares?

He does. Somehow he wants to continuously show the world that the EU is good and the Anglo-Saxon method is bad. With few exceptions, that is the root of most everything he writes.

Who is worrying...

"Rio 2016 Medal Table: Brexit Voters Claim Credit For Team GB Olympic Games Success

LOL how dumb are these people? Even Farage went on the bandwagon....

Guess Englands pathetic showing at the Euros does not count eh?"

This guy. ;)

So because I am posting a story about how idiotic the Brexiters are.. then I am worrying about it?

Even where I think the leave vote was a grave mistake for everybody, how idiotic the Brexit voters were in their vote to leave will show in time, one way or another.

That those spouting right now as cited are idiots, is not disputable.

joG is afflicted with the very partisanship he accuses all others of that do not share into his particular view of the world.

Projection, I believe.

Irrespective of all this here, including the reverting to non-sequiturs of often ad hominem nature when claims are met with some facts, congratulations to the British team for an overall performance that's been pretty good so far.

Same for the Danish.. maybe it is because we are in the EU that we are doing so well?!??! omfgs!!!!

It's probably all that Aquavit that's failed in being put on the list of forbidden substances.

Indeed, utterly stupid especially because it seriously has to do with the last olympic games having been held in London.

It is nationalism gone amok. Quite typical of nationalists to do this to be honest.

No they haven't, you're as bad as those claiming "Brexit" - after the Atlanta Olympics, there was a huge change in policy to make sure we never again came away with just 14 medals. Nothing to do with the EU but more to do with lottery funding. If it had anything to do with the EU then other EU nations would also have huge success.

You cant be sure. The EU has funded lots of infrastructure projects over the years, including sporting stuff. Just saying it is a possibility.

Anyone who believes that the success Team GB is achieving at RIO is a result of BREXIT is an absolute imbecile.

Anti-immigrant sentiment featured heavily in the Brexit campaign, wonder if they cheered for Mo

On that note, congrats Mo Farah, you are an absolute legend.

Sports funding agency has cut funding where there are no prospects of medals and poured money in to support areas where there are better prospects.

Ah, there were two "Mo's" who have won gold for us - Mo Farah is the one everyone remembers but Mohamed Sbihi was part of the men's fours who won their race and defeated a very good Australian four. Although he has the classic Oxbridge accent of all the rowing team, his father runs a barber's shop in Surbiton.

Team GB were doing very well prior to the London Olympics. In fact they won the same amount of gold medals in Beijing back in 2008 as they currently have in Rio.

Atlanta was the low point with only one gold. The lottery funding and rebuilding started then. Before, you found a job that would give you time off to compete, now if you're good enough, you're paid a salary to train.

Shameless EU puts itself TOP of the Olympics table – and REMOVES Great Britain completely

GB did not win any medals, the EU did.

Seems to me that the Europhiles use the same argument when discussing trade. But hey, what do I know!

Enjoying my retirement, but do drop in on occasion to see what is being said here. PetmeEU is still full of **** I see. :lamo

Have a nice day everyone. :2wave:
