I can't claim to be speaking to ALL Germans and those I'm in contact with may not constitute overall representation of Germans. From speaking with many Germans on this issue and seeing the recent rise of right leaning political parties in Germany I think its fair to say that Germans are extremely "Self Conscious" of the huge stigma the world has viewed them with since WWII and are very wary to openly admit to how they feel. They also believe strongly in conformity and not "Rocking the Boat"
If you were speaking alone with many Germans in a quiet place and said "hey so what do you really think about the Changing Demographics and large scale immigration into Germany" you might find a different trend than even the most recent polls are suggesting. This is obviously just an opinion, but do you disagree? and why?
I hear three things though.
1. Nationalism is crap and the death of any society that wants to see itself as liberal (not the US version "liberal).
2. The handling of the refugee issue, especially last year, was a total screw-up. Not the offering of refuge but having done it in the totally uncontrolled manner that then transpired.
3. New Years night in Cologne was one thing, people fleeing for their lives is another. Both should not be conflated.
