(Reuters) - A French soldier patrolling a business neighborhood west of Paris was stabbed in the neck and injured on Saturday by a man who fled the scene and is being sought by police, President Francois Hollande said

The 23-year-old was patrolling in uniform with two other soldiers as part of France's Vigipirate anti-terror surveillance plan when he was approached from behind around 6 p.m. and attacked with a knife or a box-cutter.

A police union spokesman said surveillance footage of the attacker showed him as tall and bearded, aged about 35, possibly of North African origin and wearing a white Arab-style tunic.

Hollande, in the Ethiopian city of Addis Ababa, commented on the stabbing to say police were hunting for the attacker but did not provide any details about his identity or any possible motivation for the attack.

"We still don't know the exact circumstances of the attack or the identity of the attacker, but we are exploring all options," Hollande told journalists.

Three days after a British soldier was killed in a London street by two men who said they acted to avenge violence against Muslims, the attack near Paris raised questions about a possible copycat attempt to kill a French soldier.

Interior Minister Manuel Valls noted the similarity in an interview on France 2 TV saying the attacker was clearly trying to murder his victim, but he added that it was too early to offer any theories.

"Let's be prudent for now," Valls said of the attacker's identity and motivations. "Everything is being done to arrest this individual."

Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told journalists near the site of the attack: "The soldier was attacked because he is a soldier."

"LOST A LOT OF BLOOD"

Pierre-Andre Peyvel, police prefect for the Hauts-de-Seine area west of Paris, said the soldier had lost a considerable amount of blood but would survive, and was being treated in a nearby military hospital. He was not named.

Witnesses near the commuter train station where the attack occurred gave conflicting descriptions of the fleeing suspect. One asserted on TV that he saw two men fleeing, while another said the scene was too confused to tell.

Peyvel declined to confirm or deny any description and said further details would be forthcoming. A source said police would broadcast the man's likeness if no arrest was made soon.

France is on high alert for attacks by Islamist militants following its military intervention in Mali in January, which prompted threats against French interests from AQIM, the North African wing of al Qaeda.

The latest warning was published on YouTube a few weeks before armed gunmen this week attacked a military base and a French uranium extraction site in the central African state of Niger, killing 24 soldiers and one civilian.

Valls said France would retain its current terror alert level at "red, reinforced", one step down from "scarlet", which is only activated in case of a serious and confirmed attack.

I am just putting this here because it seems its "kill a soldier week" in the islamic terrorist calendar. We have riots in Sweden, decapitation in London and now a stabbing of a soldier around Paris by a north african immigrant (as in, arab, but you know, political correctness rules). Most likely, again, a muslim who decided he can live by sharia law in a nation governed by state laws. But w/e.

So yeah. Apparently this week has been crazy. It can only serve as an example of what open borders does to a society.

No doubt, far right extremists will have a field day. Get ready for a rise in opinion polls all over Europe... and that is a danger to us all. Would it not be smarter for current, more centrist administrations to take effective measures to reduce violence from immigrants and future immigrants to clip the wings from the extremists rhetoric.

This is really the discussion here. Shouldn't European countries, currently having either left or right or centrist political parties in power, do something to limit immigration, raise the bar for future immigrants, start deportation of illegal individuals and reform the asylum seekers policy to have a more comprehensive method of keeping an eye on them. With such measures you can basically destroy the extremist platform, gain a greater security within your border and offer the immigrants who deserve to be in the country a better life. Why? Because the scum of the earth, who just happen to share their religious belief or ethnicity, will not be present in such large numbers in the country to make them all look bad and be the very image of negative stereotypes, increasing, with good justification, the amount of prejudice honest immigrants from middle eastern countries or african countries face. or from any place for that matter.

This is the real discussion.

The real discussion is how 3 armed soldiers can be jumped by one man with a knife, and he still manages to get away. Un-****ing-believable.

I guess the other two soldiers ran off while their buddy was being stabbed. Worst battle-buddies ever. But hey that's what we can expect from the French.

I think their youth and innexperience has something to do with it too. They did say the soldier was only 23. Maybe his buddies were even younger.

Anyway, the problem is that this will be a field day of propaganda for the extremists. Expect to see Le Pen's party move higher in the polls.

Wtf? 23 is youth? For soldiers that's ripe and seasoned. I was 17 when I joined, 19 in Afghanistan, and you better ****ing believe I never would have stood there or run off if one of my comrades was being attacked.

No god damn excuse for that. Unless this is the muslim Batman.

Lol, muslim Batman. But I think your first post was closer to the mark. We are talking about French soldiers here. Chances are this guys two buddies had already surrendered. God knows how many more have been take prisoner by this knife-wielding attacker. Not sure how much longer the French government can survive.

There were police in the patrol too. Leaving aside the anti-French snark, Why were soldiers there patrolling a civilian shopping mall?

well most of my fellow European posters would see everything carry on as it has and any suggestion of limiting immigration is met with fierce opposition. But remember everyone this is our fault because we were not welcoming enough and we don't hold immigrants hands long enough when they get here.

Pure speculation...but I would bet money that if they had weapons they didnt have bullets and every soldier in France has been given strict orders to be a presence and nothing more.

I don't know what would be more embarassing:

- The French are sending out "anti-terror" patrols without either bullets or weapons.
or
- The soldiers involved were fully armed but complete and total ******s.

They should at least have a night stick or something. There is really no excuse.

Are you saying that France is a nation of Barney Fifis?

Really now. They could have been administering first aid to their comrade who had been stabbed in the f'in throat or decided not to open fire in a crowded shopping mall, thus acting completely appropriately. There's really no need to regress to stereotype on which we have little information.

And Gendarmes are very tough police.

As well as the Gendarmes, the French also have the National and Local Police. The most hated and controversial police in France being the National Police's Riot Unit known as the CRS (Compagnies Républicaines de Sécurité).
