Trump ‘turns back the clock’ by luring drilling companies to pristine lands | Environment | The Guardian

Energy companies have leased 9.9m acres from the administration – and the fossil fuels extracted could equal half a year of emissions from China

The Trump administration has offered oil companies a chunk of the American west that’s four times the size of California – an expansive drilling plan that threatens to entrench the industry at the expense of other outdoor jobs, while locking in enough emissions to undermine global climate policy.

Energy companies have leased 9.9m acres from the unprecedented 461m acres put up for rent by the Trump administration, according to a new analysis from the Wilderness Society.

So much for Trump caring anything about climate change & the impact that all this new drilling will have.

I think Mt. Rushmore would be so much more representative of our national pride with a bunch of oil rigs at the base of it, don't you?

I remember when conservatives were conservationists.

Does anyone else find it truly disturbing that the current "GOP" is trying to undo all the good Nixon accomplished.

The GOP held Nixon accountable for his crimes, now they let off a larger criminal and try to take us back to the days lake Erie was dead and it was not uncommon for our rivers to catch on fire...

Just as long as they're not cancer causing wind turbines...

Not only do people have short memories of those day like PCB contamination and the Cuyahoga River burning, they have zero memories of those events because I would suspect most of those from the right-lean in this forum were born after 1980. This country is being governed by big money corporate minds controlling our government. Goodbye to all the good done by agencies like the EPA and goodbye clean air and water. Welcome to a new era of global and personal damage.

The description under the video says it all;

"To many, the Cuyahoga River fire on June 22, 1969 represents a turning point for environmental regulation. This river caught the attention of a nation due to excessive water pollution. Certainly not the worst, it was thrust to the forefront as a symbol of environmental degradation. With the formation of the U.S. EPA in 1970 and passage of the Clean Water Act in 1972, changes were in store for all waterways in the United States. In addition to the Clean Water Act, the Cuyahoga River was one of 43 Areas of Concern identified by the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. These programs and regulations were focused on improving the lives of those both in and near the water. Now 50 years later, how is this river doing in its recovery “fueled” by local, state and federal partners?"

The Trump administration have also used faulty science and data in their attempt to roll back tailpipe-pollution standards that have saved Americans $500 billion in fuel costs.

"Once this and other major mistakes are fixed, all of SAFE’s safety benefits vanish, according to a recent peer-reviewed analysis in Science. If SAFE is adopted into law, American traffic deaths could actually increase, carbon pollution would soar, and global warming would speed up.
In other words, SAFE isn’t actually safe—and the Trump administration based its rollback on flawed math.

Extensive interviews with key participants and a review of emails and documents reveal how this happened: The Trump administration kept the government’s top tailpipe-pollution experts from working on the tailpipe-pollution rule. For two years, rival bureaucrats at NHTSA and overworked Trump political appointees stonewalled the EPA team, blocked it from learning of the rollback, and prevented it from seeing analysis of the new rule. When the EPA engineers finally saw the flawed study and identified some of its worst errors, the same Trump officials ignored them."

That will be changed back as soon as Trump is gone...It barely matters...Who Cares.

Why stop there, make it a dollar and we can all have a guaranteed income of $1000 per month!

Political decisions can have an impact far into the future. Think for example of all the generations of Americans that have enjoyed the decisions to create the Yellowstone Nation Park. There you sadly also have politicians like Trump wants to open up pristine lands for drilling instead of preserving them for future generations.

There future generation will also bare the brunt cost of climate change.

We dont have any idea what will happen, one thing that has been consistent has been that the so-called experts are wrong, Another is that they cant get anything built at a decent price or at a decent speed, Another is that America is falling apart and has been for decades....another is that these so-called experts mostly look the other way as they dont speak truth and rarely put thier necks out.....Not even for the kid and grandkids.

Given that our experts suck and given that even had they turned up capable the chances that they could manipulate the weather successfully were near zero, I vote that we spend our money and energy getting ready for what might come. We should do this so that the most people can live the best life they can. The way the experts have it we will blow a lot of money and live degraded lives till they realize that the changes are here now, that if we are going to save lives then we need to work on dealing with the change in the weather rather than trying to control it...and we will have no plans....because we wasted the planning time with this fantasy that we could control the weather.

The devastating effects of climate change are already being felt all across the world and thing could easily get a lot worse.

If the dire consequences are already here then trying to change the weather is doubly moronic.

OOPS!

US regulators plan to make it harder for small shareholder to hold companies accountable.

"Managers of the Church of England’s £8.3bn investment portfolio have criticised US regulators for planning to deny smaller shareholders, such as the church, the right to challenge US companies over excessive executive pay and the climate crisis.

A group of 70 church investors, including the C of E, have written to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) opposing its plans to “modernise” shareholder rules by adding stricter criteria for filing resolutions voted on at a company’s annual meeting.

The Church Investors Group (CIG), which manages a combined £21bn in assets, said the changes would make it harder for independent shareholders to push for better governance."

If you broke your foot will still try to walk on it instead of going to the doctor? Because hey it is already broken.

After you brake your foot hopefully you are bright enough to stop trying to not break your foot, and instead work on trying to manage on a broken foot.

Believe me, I know full well how few people are that bright.

We do live in the age of the Modern Moron!

Good for the USA.

Until we can efficiently convert over to a viable energy source other than petroleum, we should exploit every ounce of it.

Thankfully more and more people and also governments companies and investors are figuring out it's not good idea to continue to break your foot. That you instead need immediate action on climate change.
