I had to shut the whole system down
I had to shut the whole system down
People try to save this Earth From an ugly death
I had to shut the whole system down
People trying to live workin’ In a world to meet that threat
Had to shut the whole system down
All around the planet there’s a blindness
That just can’t see
I had to shut the whole system down
They’re all wearing climate shades
As cool as they can be
I had to shut the whole system down
Shut it down, shut it down Shut it down, shut it down

Have to shut the whole system down
That’s the only way we can all be free
Have to shut the whole system down
Start again and build it for eternity
Have to shut the whole system down
What about the animals? What about the birds and bees?
Have to shut the whole system down
What about the bookshelves? What about the history?
Have to shut the whole system down
Shut it down, shut it down
Shut it down, shut it down
Shut it down, shut it down
Shut it down, shut it down

Have to shut the whole system down
When I look at the future I see hope for you and me
Have to shut the whole system down
Working, working for eternity…
Working now, working now
Have to shut the whole system down, working now
When I look to the future I see hope for you and me
Have to shut the whole system down
Working for eternity
Have to shut the whole system down
Have to shut the whole system down
Have to shut the whole system down

Thanks for this, Neil Young is one of my old favorites. ;)

Nice song, but of course it won't work. Impractical dreaming never does.

There is no "re-start" button. "Shutting the whole system down" would result in mass unemployment, starvation, plagues, and of course war for scarcer resources and basic survival.

All we can really try to do is effect surgical and topical efforts, while striving to develop technology that is less harmful and more efficient to replace problem-causing agents with.

He certainly hasn't mellowed, has he.
Sounds like it shoulda been called "HEY YOU, GET OFFA MY LAWN".

More Country Girl and less old-timer ranting would be in order.

Maybe that's his point...things have gone too far for anything but drastic, unrealistic measures to work...

There's a reason why Crosby, Stills and Nash didn't want him around.

We watch the old news
Distracted as they talked on and on in the usual way
About the latest lies, deceptions
We saw tomorrow, we long for a better day
And I know why green is blue
There's so much we didn't do
Oh, I know why green is blue
We heard the warning calls, ignored them
We watched the weather change, we saw the fires and floods
We saw the people rise, divided
We fought each other while we lost our coveted prize
There's so much we didn't do
That we knew we had to do
And we know why green is blue
We watched the species die, we saw the coral turning
We watched the oceans rise
We saw the pot of whales lay bloated
On the shore where they baked, but we missed that sign
We saw the polar bear, she floated
On a piece of ice from another time
So I know
