Freight Railroads Funded Climate Denial for Decades - The Atlantic

In the fight against climate change, the nation’s freight railroads have painted themselves as heroes. Rail is the “the most environmentally friendly way” to move cargo over land, says the Association of American Railroads, the industry’s trade group. The industry’s four biggest companies agree: “Railroads are essential to moving [climate] objectives forward,” says CSX Transportation, the largest railroad east of the Mississippi.

Yet for almost 30 years, the biggest players in the freight-rail industry have waged a campaign to discredit climate science and oppose almost any federal climate policy...Their effort has cost at least tens of millions of dollars and outlasted individual leaders and coalitions.

Interesting that something which does not exist is used as both a marketing tool and also requires millions of dollars be spent to deny.

Why did railroads invest millions in climate-science denial? Perhaps because coal makes up almost one of every three tons of American rail freight. Nearly 70 percent of American coal is shipped by rail, often along “dedicated” lines that can “operate around the clock,” the rail association says on its website. The largest class of railroads made a combined $10.7 billion, or 14 percent of their revenue, hauling coal last year. So while rail companies say they emitted only about 0.6 percent of U.S. greenhouse-gas pollution last year, their indirect carbon footprint may be gargantuan.

Follow the money.

Are the AGW sciences so weak that they cannot take scrutiny?

"Every year we lose a meter or half a meter of ice," said Tschannen. "Eighty years ago this glacier was much bigger than it is now."

Tschannen attributes the discovery of the Dumoulins to global warming, saying the bodies were exposed in a part of the glacier exposed to rapid melting.

The ice surrounding the prized and picturesque alps is indeed melting.

This is especially true of CSX. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad was built to be a coal road.

It’s merger partner, the Baltimore and Ohio invented the “unit train” for the extractive industries.

Do you think a melting glacier is evidence of man cause climate change?
what about the evidence that glaciers have been melting to thousands of years before Humans were a factor?
No the science is weak, and the only way to keep the political band wagon rolling, is to not allow any to question the scientific basis!

The railroad industry will survive.

It remains the most efficient mover of bulk cargo there is.

And they have been reconfiguring themselves to address the drop in coal revenue. They have been doing so gradually since the great Coal Strike of 1901. Yes, coal has been declining in energy market share for over a century.

CSX is investing heavily in new marine terminal facilites, and in recent years completed a massive capital program to enable double stacking of container trains, effectively doubling its capacity along the length of its main line.

Warren Buffett wouldn’t be in the business if he thought it was a long term loser.

Yes following the money answer the question why action on manmade global warming have been delayed for so long time.

AGW science have taken massive scrutiny for many decades from fossil fuel companies scientists, federal agencies under Republican politicians and the result is that the evidence is so overwhelming that both federal agencies under Donald Trump and fossil fuel companies have to acknowledge the urgent need for action.

Pretty much fact: if someone denies climate science, they are falling for propaganda.

Oh my tens of millions of dollars. If you're really interested in following the money:

Here's the link to follow:

Can you say Two BILLION dollars? I knew you could.

By the way, if you actually do follow that link you will see that it has dropped, yes DROPPED
from nearly 2.6 Billion in 2017 to the 2.0 this year. I credit that President Donald J. Trump.

If you actually think the AGW sciences have taken scrutiny,
Then why is the range of ECS still so broad?
The upper end could be eliminated, but that would put the alarmist out of business.
Others besides railroads protect their flow of money!

Are you actually trying to suggest an industry lobby as related to climate\environmental policy is more influential and less grounded than the green lobby. That's humorous to sat the least.

His type are always looking for scapegoats.

Yes, recall the time around 2008, before the North Dakota oil find. Oil prices were going way up, and railroad freight cargo went on a steep rise. It's just a matter of time before this happens again. The way the US burns gasoline, we'll use up the North Dakota oil in no time.

The fossil fuel companies that are among the most profitable companies in the world have known about manmade global warming for over fifty years.

List of largest corporate profits and losses - Wikipedia

Oil industry knew of 'serious' climate concerns more than 45 years ago | Business | The Guardian

There fossil fuel profit's have been reduced and threatened by action to combat manmade global warming for a long time. For example that Sweden implemented a carbon tax more than 20 years ago.

So the fossil fuel have had both the resources, the time and the motivations to disprove the urgent need for action. There the result is instead that they to have to acknowledge the urgent need for action.

You also have Bush that was president for eight year and Trump that have been president for three years. There for example Trump have claimed that climate change is a Chinese hoax and also wants to spend billions on propping up unprofitable coal plants.

Donald J. Trump on Twitter: "The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive."

Areyou expecting the return of peak oil?

None of your redundant citations alter the fact that the people who make alarming findings about AGW also have a financial motive!

I guess the fact that the alarming findings about AGW also have observable evidence supporting the alarm escapes you.
