New Zeeland pass a bipartisan zero carbon bill. That taking action on climate change shouldn't be a partisan issue.

"Jacinda Ardern’s landmark climate legislation has passed in New Zealand parliament, with historic cross-party support, committing the nation to reduce its carbon emissions to zero by 2050 and meet its commitments under the Paris climate accords.

The climate change response (zero carbon) amendment bill passed on Thursday afternoon with the centre-right opposition National party throwing their support behind it late in the day, despite none of their proposed amendments being accepted. The bill passed 119 votes to one.

Climate change minister James Shaw said the bill, which commits New Zealand to keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees, provided a framework for the island country of nearly 5 million to adapt too, and prepare for the climate emergency."

New Zealand has a Climate-Change Minister?

I'm jealous as hell. Well done NZ

Proof there is one intelligent New Zealander.

LOL I guess theyre gonna have to kill all the sheep in Kiwiland and start banning fossil fuels while theyre at it...

These public commitments are very important. You have to wonder though. The US made some commitments, and look what happened. Something as simple as a new voice in power can change things quickly.

That's why it's so important that climate change becomes a bipartisan issue. There you also starting to see a shift in the US among Republicans, even if you sadly still have politicians like Donald Trump.

While in other countries you have right wing governments that support the transition away from fossil fuels.

LOL I guess theyre gonna have to kill all the sheep in Kiwiland and start banning fossil fuels while theyre at it...

82% of new zealands energy is from renewable sources. Studies show that cows are more of a threat for methane than sheep. And there a few methods underway to control that. Farmers have been given 5 years to create a sizable reduction by their own agreed method rather than the government imposing methods on them.

I'll believe it when it actually works. To go net zero means you'll essentially be banning fossil fuels and air planes. I wonder how the Kiwis and the people who go back and forth in and out of the country will deal with that. By sail?

Your sceptism is not unreasonable. But then your an american and quite use to been fed propaganda and lies to deny climate change and make any effort to stop it seem unreasonable.

Firstly we do not need to meet a net zero emission. Much of the carbon pollution can be mitigated by planting trees of which nz government has pledged to plant a billion trees.

We are transitioning to electric to remove fossil fuel driven transports. And if you have been following the advances in electric planes then that is not that impossible either.

And we are already starting to introduce electric powered ferries for our internal water transport. That kind of innovation will soon turn to international shipping as well.

But facts don't matter to rich politicians. Their policies only affect the peasants. The message is what matters.

Consider for a second that if the fuels used in existing vehicles and transports, were made from electricity, and carbon neutral,
would that not achieve the same goal, but without changing all the vehicles and infrastructure.
Sunfire – Energy Everywhere - Sunfire
Batteries and hydrocarbon based fuels, are both energy storage devices.
Hydrocarbon fuels happen to be a lot more efficient per unit mass at energy storage,
but suffer inefficiencies in a heat engine.
Electric vehicles are very efficient on torque, but suffer inefficiencies on battery weight.
A better design would be to combine the best aspects of both.
Carry energy as a hydrocarbon, but split off the hydrogen for a fuel cell to feed the electric drive.

True, the right wing opposition party voted to accept the policies created but have already stated they would make changes if and when elected to government. Those changes will most likely put profit before climate.

There is a definite need to move away from fossil fuels so the design of electric or hydrocarbon can only, hopefully, improve.

BUt I am talking about man made fuels, that are carbon neutral, but fill the same role as gasoline or jet fuel made from oil.

Every avenue should be explored.
but they are not being explored, we have an energy problem, but things like nuclear seem to be excluded from consideration.
Some technologies are subsidized, and funded.
Solar sound good, but I think feed in tariffs, could limit how quickly solar can spread.
we need smarter, not pre selected solutions.

Nuclear is not a consideration for nz, nor should it be.

America has the problem of existing power companies spending huge amounts to not have alternate research done. Countries like nz cannot afford that so reasearch into alternatives progress.

NZ has large amounts or hydro power, but other areas are not so blessed.
That nuclear is not a consideration, says that Every avenue is not being explored.
I do not know where you get your information, but American power companies are not fighting doing research.
They are pushing back on laws that will destroy their business.
Imagine a business required by law to pay the retail price for units they usually buy for wholesale.
This is what net metering does! If my solar panels produce 1 surplus Kwh, it goes into the grid, and I get 1 retail credit for that Kwh.
milliseconds later when the grid sells my Kwh, for the retail rate, there is ZERO profit.

No, not quite true about nuclear. Auckland our largest city has 50 dormant volcanoes in its area. If you think nuclear is an option for new zealand then i invite you to google a map of nz showing the fault lines and volcanoes in new zealand and then you tell me where you would put a nuclear reactor.

Yeah right! Like there is a difference.

Maybe an abundance of geothermal?

New Zealand's Consumption - Energy Mix

That shows that as of 2018 the NZ production was at 40% renewable.

But hey...40...100...Im all for it.

Fair enough about the fault lines.
If you do not think there is a difference between companies pushing back against laws that can destroy them,
and doing research, i do not know what to tell you, as you do not understand how gross profit, has to cover all
the cost of operating the business.

Enormous amount of money have been spend on research and development for nuclear power.

There ending fossil fuel subsidies and spend some of that money on renewable energy and other new technologies could really speed up the transition away from fossil fuels.

Also you should have seen drastic investment and already have carbon neutral fossil fuels by now if it had been a realistic alternative. Because the oil crisis in the 1970's showed the huge cost and risk of being dependent on fossil fuels from the Middle East. There the cost and risk have continue to increase since then.
