Tesla stock has jumped 18% to $300.32 after the company turned a surprise profit. With 179 million shares outstanding, that leaves Tesla with a market cap of nearly $54 billion dollars. At Wednesday's closing price of $254.68, Tesla was worth just under $46 billion.

General Motors ( GM ) stock has dropped 0.4% to $36.45 in after-hours trading -- blame Ford Motor ( F ) , which cut its earnings guidance. At that price, GM is worth just over $52 billion. Ford is worth nearly $36 billion after dropping 2.6% to $8.97 in after-hours trading.

Keywords on: surprise profit, which meant that analysts werent expecting Tesla to make any. Then again, it was one quarter, so we'll have to see if the company can sustain it to become an annual thing. I wont hold my breath though.

But they did. Despite it being 'unexpected'. Possibly because of the obvious developments: electric and hybrid cars are the future. Keep holding that breath though...

Wrong. Tesla's "profit" in the last quarter didnt come from e-car sales, but from cost cutting and emissions credits.

In fact Tesla's sales are down. So it's pretty certain you have no idea what youre talking about.

GM just came off a strike, and will stand to lose about 4 billion this year.

Tesla made about a 193 million dollar profit because the company sold almost 200 million dollars worth of carbon credits.

Electric cars can also soon be price competitive with fossil fuels cars.

Tesla is also now under investigation by the Feds due to lots of complaints and fatal battery fires, too.

I don't think he has a clue of why the markets do what they do.

Tesla made improvements in 2013. There have been a few fires since then. All have been during crashes. Funny how nobody questions fires and explosions in gasoline driven cars, which are quite common, in conjunction with crashes.

I wonder how many electric cars are having such issues vs. deadly problems with IC cars?

It will be difficult for any technology to eliminate fires completely, during or after a crash. A lot of components, and their associated software, can become dysfunctional. The key here is that it is 5x more likely that a fire develop in a gasoline-powered car. Electric cars are an improvement.

A man died in a burning Tesla because its futuristic doors wouldn’t open, lawsuit alleges
One man died when the doors wouldnt open, and he was burned alive. What kind of ICE car can do that?

Also, people are complaining about the battery. One man said after a software update his Tesla was only getting 30 miles per charge.

Gasoline-powered cars can do that, and much more. "5x more likely to catch fire"...

Are you going to post all the problems with gasoline powered cars - "ZERO miles with a fuel injection problem"...

Does that mean we have more rich folks who can afford these vehicles?

The Model 3 starts at $36,200, which is competetive with other new vehicles, and in reality, you are getting a luxury car. There also may be State and Federal tax credits. The purchaser will save enough in fuel costs and maintenance to come out way ahead.

Well I dont know of any ICE cars that will keep their doors locked when a fire starts. For a car with a few hundred thousand vehicles on the road, the Tesla sure gets a lot of complaints.

There are several incidents of the same for IC cars. It happens because the car crashes, and the door jams up. Are you saying they don't have a manual latch?

I article says the outside handles retract in. This guy was already badly hurt since he couldn't open it from the inside, and I'll bet it took a toot to open the door anyway, like "the jaws of life." The force of the accident probably jammed the door too.

The article doesn't have enough details.

Yes, ICE manufacturers have similar door locks.

Fiery Tesla crash with trapped driver puts focus on vehicle door locks | Autoblog

Setting door mechanism functionality aside, automatic locking and unlocking systems are another pivotal component of manufacturers' accident response strategies. Many cars automatically lock the doors when you drive away now, because a car is more structurally sound in accidents with the doors locked.

Like you, the media likes to pick on Tesla, while traditional cars have much worse safety records - did I mention that ICE cars have 5x the chance of catching fire? Tesla is cooperating with investigators, and will probably make adjustments. Will that set the stage for other automakers to make the same changes? Will the Tesla scrutiny improve all autos?

Yep.

My Sedan has automatic door locks. In a crash, I can open it from the inside, but not the outside.

I think we found something we actually agree on...

In the Tesla crash, why didn't they break the window and open it from the inside latch?
