Earlier this month, the government increased fares to $1.17 (£0.90) for a journey during peak hours, blaming higher energy costs and a weaker peso.

New Green busses using electric batteries cost much more to run. Somebody has to pay so charge the poor.

Loads of other new costs of all this green stuff.

This is just the beginning. When the believing public realizes the total cost of this AGW scam, they're gonna realize what a bunch of dopes they were.

They wanted a subway fare hike rescinded, and it has been. Meh.

Chile protesters want quite a bit more. They want to replace the their constitution which was implemented by authoritarian strongman and Republican favorite, Augusto Pinochet.

Oh yes, there is more to it.

But just like the Islamic Spring and Syrian war were started when the price of food rose due to changes in US biofuel policy when the poor are impacted by the massive costs of green policies they get angry.

The wealth gap is a greater issue, but I suspect your concern for the poor stops at that edge.

It most certainly does.

Similar concern trolling was noted in the case of the Yellow Jacket protests in France which were predominantly due to cumulative policies passed by Macron that favoured the rich while soaking the poor and middle class, but of course conservatives latched onto the triggering fuel tax (a regressive tax meant to fiscally offset tax cuts for the wealthy) exclusively while ignoring all of the politically inconvenient broader context.

Wrong.

Yellow vests movement - Wikipedia

"The protesters criticized Édouard Philippe's second government for making individuals liable for the bulk of the cost of the carbon tax. As the carbon tax had progressively been ramping up to meet ecological objectives, many who have chosen fossil fuel-based heating for their homes, outside of city centres—where a car is required—are displeased. "

No. I agree that the wealth of the world being as concentrated as it is is bad. I would like to see a return to something closer to the 1960's distribution of taxation where wealth was taxed more than income.

My concearn for the world's poor is most extreme over the impact of the artificially raised food prices we are seeing. This is causing the deaths of some 20 million people per year and holding the poor of the world in desperate poverty which they would other wise be escaping very quickly. 3 billion people live on less than $2.50 a day. They have life expectancies in the 40's. Stop biofuel and they will expect to live to 60.

Poor prople pay the tax on fuel more than the rich.

Bloomberg - Are you a robot?

Santiago is updating its public transit system. The Chilean capital has rolled out 203 electric buses since December, with about 180 more due in October. The government has touted the buses’ lower operating costs and contribution to cleaner air. Commuters, Transport Minister Gloria Hutt has said, “feel the journey is much better.”

Everything I have read about Santiago's electric buses have stated the operating costs are lower, while the initial capital costs are higher

An Increasingly Urbanized Latin America Turns to Electric Buses - Yale E360

Santiago’s electric buses cost about 70 Chilean pesos (10 cents) per kilometer to operate — about one-fourth the cost of diesel buses, according to Enel X, the “e-solutions” division of global energy company Enel Group. Batteries and electric motors are more energy efficient than internal combustion engines, and they generally require less maintenance.

snip

Significant hurdles remain to scaling up Latin America’s electric bus fleet, particularly at the pace required to meet global climate change targets. Electric buses still cost two to three times more upfront than conventional diesel buses. Electric charging infrastructure can add millions more dollars to projects. Cities must also spend to design optimal routes and train drivers and mechanics for the new vehicles.

Not at all. Go look at the actual objectives and demands of the movement as well as the other components of the lead up. Anyone who thinks this is predicated wholly on fuel and carbon taxes is simply wrong; it's only a part of the issue. Even after the triggering tax was rescinded the protests continued in force, along with their broader, more egalitarian oriented demands, including the abolition of Macron's tax cuts for the rich (which he stubbornly refused to commit to).

Then came the reality; Bus faires up massively.

Or as public transit is usually subsidized to begin with, the Santiago government may have decided to cut the subsidy and raise prices even though operating costs were lower. Chile gets 33% of its electricity from hydroelectric sources so electricity is not going to be expensive

The electricity may well be very cheap. That however does not mean that the batteries are cheap or last long.

The buses are not a new design and have been in operation in China for years. Chile would have had the operating data from Chinese operations. BYD is the main supplier, it has a significant ownership stake by Warren Buffet's BH. The capital costs are higher, and that could be the issue, in trying to recoup the initial costs for purchase

Or in the hilly terrain of Chille rather than the flat land where they work best the busses cost a fortune to run.

Fabulous!

All those contemptable ordinary people having opinions about things that go against their betters!!

Wrong. Thy started to riot because of the carbon tax first, thats how these things start. I'll take Wikipedia's article over your opnion anytime.

And the Hong Kong riots started because they changed the law to allow a 20 year old gruesome murderer to be extradited to Taiwan to face justice for the death of his pregnant girlfriend. People look for legitimate movements to co-op all the time.

First France now Chile...anywhere the far-left AGW extremists pass a real policy that's more than jus whining and stopping their feet the people seem to riot.

This is a laughable amount of purposeful denial. It most certainly was due to climate change policies and the funny thing is is that the policies implemented where no where nearly so sever as what is claimed to be needed to stop AGW.

The best part about this is the measures implemented are barely a sliver of what AGW alarmists say are needed to even slow it, not even talking about stopping or reversing it.

Yeah, when it starts to be the inevitable deluge of cost onto the poor the poor don't like it.

Odd that.
