In a global show of solidarity, students all over the world have gone on strike today to get world leaders to do more about climate change. This is the coming generation, and they feel that the older generations are betraying them and letting them down. They are not going to be in school. Their teachers, as well as the mayors of their cities are supporting them. Greta Thunberg, the young Swedish student who testified in the US congress recently, has become their idol. Whereas before the teen hairstyle rage all over the world was to try to look like Ariana Grande, now all the rage is having hair that looks like Greta's.

Here is live coverage of these protests as they are unfolding all over the world:

Meanwhile, back here in the US, the Republican Party remains the only party in the developed world that denies climate change (not to mention having a large part of its base still thinking the Earth is only 6000 years old and trickle down economics works).

The US is not a world leader anymore.

Greta is becoming a modern day Joan of Arc.

Are we suppose to believe taking a day off from school is some big sacrifice on their part.

Why not do something that would actually counter climate change like turning off the airconditoners for the entire school year. Of course that wont happen because that would be an inconvenience for them. Something like that i would respect. Giving yourself a day off from school... not so much.

I’m sure the right wing, science denying old fogies will be along shortly to take a dump on these kids heads when these kids are actually standing for something real and important, while they stand behind a giant orange moron who craps lies into their ears daily as they cheer him on.

Students going on strike?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I don’t think they understand how strike work or why.

Yes. We should not take the future of the next generation seriously until they set themselves on fire in the streets.

I bet you were stamping your feet and huffing and puffing as your wrote that. Calm down, your mom will be by with another pop tart soon

I wounder how much it will cost the NYC schools to not have the students in attendance today?

How does that make the concerns of the students any less valid?

Can kids take a school-sanctioned day off for anything now, like 2A rights or anti-abortion?

I wonder if the people in the Houston, Texas area are giving a second thought about global warming and the reasons behind their historic floods?

What big sacrifice are those that are against abortions taking when they just go out and hold signs? What sacrifice are those people making when they protest gay marriage? Not all protests have to have the person sacrificing for it to be a valid protest.

That's like asking anti-vaxxers dying of complications of whooping cough if they think it has anything with not getting the vaccine. The answer is no.

Human psychology can be very interesting.

How does that make the concerns of the students any less valid?
Are their concerns based on factual data, or are they concerned because of propaganda?
I was pointing out that the school letting the students off, could cost the district millions of dollars.
I would hope our taxing authorities would be more careful with the peoples money.

Was that a threat? Remember what happened to Joan.

Climate change is a semitruck barreling right at them. The deniers are the drivers who refuses to incovenience themselves by braking.

Are their concerns based on factual data, or are they concerned because of propaganda?

It is based on the unanimous consensus of every single scientific organization on the entire planet.

Somehow, I doubt that sort of political "wokeness" would be considered a valid (excused?) absence.

Your reasoning is nonsensical. Dying of whooping cough has EVERYTHING to do with not receiving the vaccine! A person is not likely to die of whooping cough if they've been vaccinated against it. This disease was almost eradicated, until of course anti-vaxers denied their children the protections the vaccine would give to them. If a child gets whooping cough, it's a 100% guarantee that it's because he has not received the immunity to it through the DPT vaccine.

You've just proven that human critical thinking can be extremely faulty.

Not getting the vaccine is a big risk factor for death and injury from whooping cough.

Not doing anything about climate change is a big risk factor for death and economic devastation from climate change.

Both groups denying these things say these are all just attempts by big government to run our lives and should be ignored.

Not that different.

We are on the gulf coast, we get tropical weather, it happens.
Lots of development, means more ground covered in concrete, and faster runoff to drainage.
Houston has been flooding since it's founding, and does a great job of dealing with it,
but it is really nothing new.

HCFCD - Harris County's Flooding History
When the Allen brothers founded Houston in 1836, they established the town at the confluence of Buffalo and White Oak Bayous.
Shortly thereafter, every structure in the new settlement flooded. Early settlers documented that after heavy rains,
their wagon trips west through the prairie involved days of walking through knee-deep water.

It is based on the unanimous consensus of every single scientific organization on the entire planet.
Again the consensus of scientists, has been exaggerated beyond it meaning,
The consensus does not include CO2 sensitivity.

I wonder if the people in the Houston, Texas area are giving a second thought about global warming and the reasons behind their historic floods?

Yeah. Hurricane season is nothing new and you wish to blame it on climate change. :lamo I wonder if monitoring CO2 does any thing? Logically thinking, it does not.

Most of the kids will ditch the rally and go smoke dope and play video games somewhere. They know when they are being manipulated by grownups.

I’d like to see a statistic on sales of abortion pills in a month or so.
