Politico article written by Republican House Representative Francis Rooney.
I'm a conservative Republican. Climate change is real.
I’m a conservative Republican and I believe climate change is real. It’s time for my fellow Republicans in Congress to stop treating this environmental threat as something abstract and political and recognize that it’s already affecting their constituents in their daily lives....
I’m from a coastal district that is directly affected by these issues every day. In fact, my home state of Florida is ground zero for the adverse effects of climate change. As these extreme weather events increase in frequency and intensity, Congress — especially my Republican colleagues — needs to recognize the costs, disruptions and global security risks that climate change will bring to both our domestic and foreign policy, and the federal budget.
Rooney is an outlier in the Republican party, but hopefully not for too much longer.
Say for the sake of argument, climate change was real. Identifying a problem is different from solving the problem of climate change. These are tow separate things. Why does anyone think any quick talking politician/lawyer can solve this problem, without making things worse? What makes any of the current candidates experts in global climate remediation, when this science does not yet even exist, since it has never been done before?
Screwing up something is one things, but fixing the screw up is another thing, entirely. It is harder to fix something than it is to break it. If your son drives your car into a wall, backing out in reverse, does not fix your car. There is a thing called entropy, which requires an entirely different path for fixing compared to breaking. The deep sea diver can descend in one motion, but he has to ascend in stages.
The earth is an integrated system. Because of this integration, we can assume there is an added impact due to the human sourced CO2 and other global warming gases. The current trends in climate, today, are based on over a hundred years of a gradual CO2 increase, where the earth also gradually adapted, until we have the earth of today. The earth still works fine.
Say we were to quit adding CO2 and all the other greenhouse gases, cold turkey, as is proposed by the politicians. In the long term. we may restore the past concentrations and the 100 year old equilibrium. But in the short term, we all create a drastic non equilibrium state, that the earth cannot address, immediately. It took 100 years to get where we are. A one year change back to the past, would not allow the earth to keep pace. It would create a non equilibrium disaster transition state, that would take decades to stabilize. But in the mean time, climate will become more dynamic to remove the potential we will add.
In science, after you identify a problem, solutions are first proposed. The normal protocol is to do pilot scale tests of the best proposals, before jumping into full production mode. This is to make sure you do not make things worse, before you work out the bugs. Nobody has done this before. The politicians offering solutions, by not being scientists, have no clue about the normal protocol and fail safe called pilot studies.
As an example, in the 1980's, a deadly virus was discovered that was decimating the homosexual population. It took a few years to identify it as the AIDS virus. Here we are in 2019, nearly 40 years later and we still have not solved that tiny virus problem, compared to world climate change experiment. Imagine if Senator Granny Warren and others, had jumped at the first hopeful vaccine, in 1988, and made this a national war drive, to immunize everyone, without any pilot study. The result would have been a disaster without solving the problem.
The boneheads who wish to lead this cause, have no clue how to control the earth's climate. Not even the best scientists will claim this. The earth adapts to change, gradually, and in sometimes in unexpected ways. Backing out to quickly may not fix the car, without causing more damage.
