Looks like electric cars are becoming the NORM in Europe.

Automakers turn on style to try to switch SUV fans to electric - Reuters

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Mercedes-Benz and Porsche are showcasing curvaceous, high-end electric sports cars at the Frankfurt auto show as part of an industry effort to counter Tesla, avert billions in European pollution fines and defuse complaints from climate activists. Germany’s premium automakers are now marketing electric cars as their flagship models, a strategy which Daimler, Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) and BMW hope will lure customers away from gas-guzzling SUVs that could soon land them with hefty fines under new EU emissions rules.

Europe has much smaller distances than we in the US; they have however, always been more sensible in their automobile choices than we have.

When are "high end cars" normal in Europe? Do you think most citizens there buy high end cars?

The common citizen cannot afford the extra cost of an electric car. That's why they are first targeting the rich, like Tesla did with his first Roadster. If I recall, the base price of that car was $150k.

Yes, and the new E-Golf starts at $31,895. Knock off the $6500 Federal Tax Credit, and you have a state-of-the-art vehicle for the same price as the cheapest rattle-trap gas guzzlers.

A TDI golf was a rattle trap gas guzzler?

2019 VW e-Golf Electric Car – Volkswagen

I've been looking at the Prius Plug In, I have a 2016 Prius and it is great, I get 50+ MPH most days, some days it is in the 60's. I just wish the plug in had more electric range, but I normally don't drive more than 25 miles per day.

I have a Volt which is a Plug-In. They doubled the battery capacity in the Volt (and also the Honda Clarity). Supposedly it's good for 54 miles on electric, but I'm seeing more like 50 miles. It's a great car though, and won the 2017 car of the year. Unfortunately, GM is discontinuing the vehicle to focus on all-electric. I very seldom purchase gas, averaging only about $5 per month. My solar PVs and wind turbine do most of the charging. Lots of Federal and State tax credits on these vehicles.

I think the $6500 Federal tax credit is still 100% available, if you purchase a Plug-In this year.
