The UN issued a warning that we have only 11 years to stop Climate Change.

U.N. Predicts Disaster if Global Warming Not Checked

<snip>
UNITED NATIONS (AP) _ A senior U.N. environmental official says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000.

Coastal flooding and crop failures would create an exodus of ″eco- refugees,′ ′ threatening political chaos, said Noel Brown, director of the New York office of the U.N. Environment Program, or UNEP.

He said governments have a 10-year window of opportunity to solve the greenhouse effect before it goes beyond human control.

As the warming melts polar icecaps, ocean levels will rise by up to three feet, enough to cover the Maldives and other flat island nations, Brown told The Associated Press in an interview on Wednesday.
<snip>

At this time, the Maldives are not underwater and are actively promoting their tourist industry.

The UN spokesperson went on to say:

"The most conservative scientific estimate that the Earth’s temperature will rise 1 to 7 degrees in the next 30 years, said Brown."

This was so long ago that the spokesperson was referred to in the article as a spokesman.

The "next 30 years" referenced in his prediction of dire consequence ended in June, 2019. At this time we are just a tad under the 7 degree global temperature increase he cited.

Sea levels have not risen by 3 feet.

It's interesting that the magnitude of the error in these predictions was extreme back then and that the magnitude of the predictions of dire consequence has not changed much over the last 30 years.

This guy said we had 11 years to act in 1989. Now AOC says we are down to about 12 years to act before the situation is no longer salvageable. Seems like thje number of years we have left to act is growing over time.

Given that the deadline IS ALWAYS more than 10 years, we seem to be in a bubble of safety in which the danger NEVER gets closer than a decade away.

Seems like we can relax. ;)

Why is ANYONE still listening to these jack wagons?

That article has been going around since it is 30 years old. But of course the climate nuts will ignore it and pretend it was never announced because it absolutely destroys their arguments. ;)

Y2K all over again...

LOL...

But then, the Chicken Little effect works on those with small minds.

Let the sea rise; I have been holding out on selling my Arizona property in hopes that it would eventually become ocean front property. :coffeepap

I guess the Science Deniers who simply cannot take the time to just look out the window for verification of predictions from their zealot leaders haven't noticed this thread yet.

None of them seem to be responding...

Did you all fail English comprehension?

The quote was: "A senior U.N. environmental official says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000."

The official is almost certainly correct. The global warming trend was not reversed by the year 2000; consequently entire nations very likely will be wiped off the face of the Earth. The Maldives, for example, are now doomed unless some way can be found to extract large amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere.

Mother Nature will do what Mother Nature wants to do. Mankind doesn't control her. These hot/cold cycles go in cycles. This earth has been a lot hotter and a lot colder. At least once covered in ice from pole to pole.

I do however think this old earth wasn't meant to handle 7-8 billion humans. We've as a species have become too good at handling overpopulation and avoiding natural selection when a species becomes too abundant for their environment or avoiding the natural section process. With animal species when they become too many for their environment, nature takes over and reduces the population. Sometimes into extinction, other the over populated species, some move to other areas. One of these days Mother Nature will strike back at the over abundant humans living on her earth. Just a matter of time.

The earth will adapt- has been since before time began- man, like animals (though sometimes there's not a lot of difference) will adapt, or die. Everyone dies sooner or later- History proves it.
One thing is for sure- tax won't stop it, gov't or entity hyperbole won't stop it and neither will help adapting- both will use fear to sell some on a need for more power, more taxes and "we have to do something"- the problem with their "something" are the unintended consequences which always never go away forcing people to adapt- and we do- but, we can control idiots- Mother Nature, not so much.

He's correct? LMAO. Please tell us how many nations have been wiped off the face of the earth so far due to AGW in the last 30 years since this report came out. Go on. :lamo

This sounds like the only solution is to throw another virgin into the volcano.

The actual land masses were very likely exposed during the last ice age. Then they were very likely under water very recently in a geological terms.

They are currently above water. They may go under water again.

Did the sage advice from the UN also include how to end any kind of changes in the climate and just implement a Never Ending Summer world wide in keeping with the wishes of the Beach Boys?

I think it's funny that you are defending anything that comes out of the UN as even somewhat logical or reality based.

I'm pretty old. Controlling idiots seems to be an ongoing challenge for most of us.

Usually not a big problem as it's an ongoing source of great amusement.

It's funny until someone gets hurt. From then on it's just freaking hilarious.

Seems to work for the ancients. I personally don't think this old earth was meant to support 7 or 8 billion people. Perhaps 4, not not many more than that. She'll have her revenge for over population and exploitation. Just a matter of time.

After 30 years, no indication of countries getting close to being wiped off the face of the earth. Heck YOU named only one and THAT tiny island seems to be ignoring that, as they have been in a building boom there.

Do you have any other tiny islands to wail over?

I would prefer about 2 billion sperm donors who can't support a child.

I agree.

I'm a jack of all trades, and can fix anything mechanical or electrical with the right parts and tools. I cannot however fix stupidity, ignorance, or arrogance. The only close fix for that is to dismantle the Department of Education, and stop giving college loans and grants to substandard students.

Actually not just likely exposed during the ice age, two mile thick masses of ice covered many land masses. The ocean was as much as 400 feet lower than now, the ice age ended, the mountains of ice "melted" and the ocean level increased to what we have now. Could it go higher, sure, we still have huge amounts of ice that could cause that - or - we could enter even another mini ice age and the ice would increase and the ocean level decrease. The climate does change, it has done so for many ages without the presence of man and will continue on with or without man. Nature always finds a way.

We also find marine fossils at places more than 100 ft. above sea level.

You gotta love how the politicians plan on fighting global climate change...... With taxes. Just throw money up in the air and it'll bring down temperatures. HA HA HA HA HA HA

More than that. I have actually collected seashells in the mountains above Palm Springs CA., approx. 10,000 feet above sea level at the peaks. Mountains have risen and fallen.

Well, 400 million years ago, the oceans covered about 90% of the surface.

With respect, we are living on the planet. The planet is more or less just "the third rock from the Sun".

The whole Earthly system, existing as a part of the Solar System and all the rest, is an amazing thing that does what it does. Like a steam roller moving forward. No emotion. Just awesome power.

There is no emotional response coming from Earth. There are responses in a cause-effect sense, but no emotions.

Regarding the number of humans on the planet, the earth can obviously support a whole bunch of us. The population density of China is about five times that of the US. The US about 10 times that of Canada.

I'm not sure that this is true, but I think I've heard that the mass of living creatures below the surface of the land and water is greater than the mass of those of us living above.

All of that said, we seem to have a knack for changing our immediate environment. The land in the Boston-Washington corridor is pretty much a trash heap vs what the pilgrims found.

If we all died today, after about 100 years, it would look more like the world the Mohicans left us than the world the modern commuter navigates. For better or worse, we are fleas on a dog.

After the next ice age, what we built in New York City will be unnoticeable.

Agreed!

I have some Liberal Arts Degrees that I paid for myself. I enjoyed the educational experience, but it is an ROI waste of money.

The current suggestions by the Democrat-Socialists to provide both free tuition and living stipends is insanity. Applying these suggestions to the 20 year old me, I'd still be in college and I just retired!

Is there anybody who is the least bit sane supporting these jack wagons?

If there's a leak in my pipes or if I need something designed, I need an engineer type. Poetry is nice, but it don't dry the carpet.
