Earth gets 20% of its oxygen from the Amazon. Today, it's on fire.

Blame humans for starting the Amazon fires

Environmental organizations and researchers say the wildfires blazing in the Brazilian rainforest were set by cattle ranchers and loggers who want to clear and utilize the land, emboldened by the country's pro-business president.

"The vast majority of these fires are human-lit," said Christian Poirier, the program director of non-profit organization Amazon Watch. He added that even during dry seasons, the Amazon -- a humid rainforest -- doesn't catch on fire easily, unlike the dry bushland in California or Australia.

Farmers and ranchers have long used fire to clear land, said Poirier, and are likely behind the unusually large number fires burning in the Amazon today.

I guess learning the hard way will be on the agenda. Man simply refuses to think before he acts. smh

Sending thoughts and prayers. That should fix everything right?

Bolsonaro is a horrible, horrible ruler, perhaps even worse than Trump.

He should be out in front of this and stopping it, not enabling it.

Hmm... I guess it's time for the Earth's government to let Brazil know that they have been found guilty of violating the Earth's laws and must be prosecuted. ;)

Tomorrow, do you want it sunny and warm or cold and wet?

How long until the Amazon rain forest is gone? Does anyone care? Do they care about the oceans becoming trash dumps, the Anthropocene extinctions, the melting of Greenland's ice caps, an ice free Arctic, glaciers going the way of the dodo?

The Earth looks pretty vast to those of us living on it, but back away to the orbit of Pluto and look at it, it's just a pale blue dot in the vastness of space. It's really pretty fragile.

That is as accurate as saying the atmosphere gets 97.5% of it CO2 from nature.

This has been going on for decades. Maybe you ought to go down there and whitesplain to the natives that they cant use their own land for survival because you have reached first world status and their attempt to do so wont be allowed. Sorry, brown people, calamity wants you to continue to live hand to mouth so he can drive his SUV.

What is funny, is the Amazon is approximately net neutral in regards to oxygen. It may provide about 20% of the oxygen sourcing, but sinks about 20% as well.

Where to these indoctrinated types come up with such laughable ideas?

Deforistation have also drasticly increased under Bolsonaro.

The data shows that deforestation has increased to the point where more than three football fields of tree cover are being lost every minute. In this month alone, more than 500 square miles have been cleared—which is already a third higher than the previous monthly record detected by the DETER-B mission.

July looks set to be the first month for several years where the Brazilian rainforest loses an area larger than the size of Greater London—around 605 square miles.

The Taiga is also on fire. That's the boreal forest belt that lies below the Arctic Circle and which encompasses almost a third of the Earth's land mass.

Well Greta Thundberg's journey to the US by boat ought to even things out... :2razz:

What do you mean by sinks?

What laughable ideas?

Seems to me, today, you are what is laughable and me too, but burning rain forest is not laughable.

In science, the various components of the earth source and sink gasses. Those are the terms used for emitting or removing a gas from the atmosphere.

I take it you never read such papers.

Vast majority of wildfires in the US are human caused. People are pretty careless.

As many as 90 percent of wildland fires in the United States are caused by people, according to the U.S. Department of Interior. Some human-caused fires result from campfires left unattended, the burning of debris, downed power lines, negligently discarded cigarettes and intentional acts of arson. The remaining 10 percent are started by lightning or lava.

He’s probably too stupid to understand why he should.

O2 combined with C perhaps.

This claim requires some evidence.

Something tells me Bolsonaro is weaponizing deforestation. If another one-fifth of the Amazon is cut down it will release around 44 gigatons of asphyxiating carbon monoxide in a sort of carbon bomb with a blast radius literally inter-****ing-continental in scale. Where are all of the ****ing interventionist Neocon warhawks when you need them? Oh, that's right, misguidedly obsessing over Iran or China, or even So-Incompetent-It-Can't-Into-Economy-Venezuela.

(By comparison, the most powerful explosion ever detonated was Russia's 'Tsar bomba' at 50 megatons. 1 gigaton is equal to One-****ing-Thousand megatons. Meaning Brazil has a bomb equal to or greater than every single ****ing other nuclear ARSENAL ON EARTH)

Report Shows Corporations and Bolsonaro Teaming Up to Destroy the Amazon

Edit: Not combined, but's that equal to approximately a thousand Tsar Bombas. Only country that probably has a nuclear arsenal that's stronger than Brazil's makeshift 'dirty WMD' is the United States of America itself, and even that's iffy

The Amazon fire propagandists have been busted.

Amazon Fire History Since 2003

We are told that Amazon fires are at record levels right now. This is a blatant lie. The only “record” is that Amazonian fires have DECREASED over the “record”. This is what we are being told. This (is) what the data actually looks like, to August 22. Yes, its updated daily. This comes from a…

Conclusion: Amazonian fires, using very current NASA data, show a decline over the record, and are nowhere close to a record so far in 2019.

Ah, so your WUWT source denies fire is real too.

Fig 2: Amazon Fire Totals via MODIS (2019 is highlighted)This comes from a wonderful site, https://www.globalfiredata.org/forecast.html#elbeni
It uses NASA MODIS data, from the Terra and Aqua satellites, and is updated daily. By going to the website, you can look at individual regions in the Amazon, or as I have done, look at the totals for the Amazon. This site also has global data, but I am only looking at the Amazon region here.
