Network with more than 7 000 universities and colleges from six continents have declared a climate emergency and also commited to adress the climate crisis.

Networks of 7,000 universities declare climate emergency

740 jurisdictions and local governments with 136 million citizens have also declared a climate emergency.

Climate emergency declarations in 740 jurisdictions and local governments cover 136 million citizens - Climate Emergency Declaration

That kind of commitment will spark a lot of action.

Meanwhile climate science deniers/climate truthers, who couldn't even get into a first year science course at any University, are still unquestioningly swallowing "sciencey sounding" blog posts by non-scientist nutters on junkscience conspiracy blogs.

Who says misguided mob insanity is not contagious?

Yawn.

Wake me when they get cold and come back inside.

It's probably one of the most obvious emergencies ever declared. Certainly climate change is more urgent than whatever phony crap the Trumpets declared was happening at the border that necessitated throwing thousands of people into overcrowded cages.

Yes, there are many people in America who actually believe the misguided insane idea that the earth is less than 10,000 years old for example, but what do your creationist religious beliefs have to do with this thread?

Fell asleep during grade school science classes eh?
I may have.

Regardless, I aced science for the first sixteen years of my education. I earned physics and chemistry minors on my math degree.

Uhuh. ;)

And yet no regard for this decision that was agreed upon by 7000 Universities and Colleges around the country? I have a cousin with a College Degree in History, and as a Senior citizen, he now majors in Conspiracy Theories. I could hook you up...

So because a whole bunch of people believe it then it must be true? With your logic then God and Satan must be real since there's like a billion Christians who believe in him too.

I actually believe in God, but not because a bunch of other people do. I do believe that there are more studied people than me on the topic of God and Spirituality, just like their are more studied people than me on the topic of Climatology. I will read both with an open mind.

Well that explains a whole lot as to why you believe in this CC nonsense. A religious person doesnt care about facts.

I have regard for it. Contempt is a regard.

Colleges used to be a place where freedom of thought and expression was protected. Now the reverse is true.

I see no evidence for your statement.

Understandable. It was a comment, not an argument.

Since you want it fleshed out, here are the basics. Climate change is real but slow. There is no need for action, much less urgent or precipitous action. Declaring an emergency is exactly the wrong thing to do and shows that the universities are putting politics above knowledge. Hence, contempt.

Since you want it fleshed out, here are the basics. Climate change is real but slow, and for all practical purposes, irreversible. There is no need for action, much less urgent or precipitous action. Declaring an emergency is exactly the wrong thing to do and shows that the universities are putting politics above knowledge. Hence, contempt.

The bolded statement above is what I would add. Even if greenhouse gases were drastically reduced today, we will still reach a minimum 1.5 deg C rise. We are currently at 0.8 to 0.9 deg C rise, and we are already seeing the effects.

IPCC 1.5-Degree C Special Report | Center for Climate and Energy Solutions

  • Global warming of 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels poses greater risks than previously believed. These risks can be substantially reduced by limiting warming to 1.5 degrees
  • Limiting warming to 1.5 degrees C requires dramatic emission reductions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by around 2050. This would entail unprecedented transformations of energy, land, urban, and industrial systems, including measures to achieve “negative emissions” by removing carbon from the atmosphere.
  • Adaptation efforts are currently insufficient to prevent losses associated with 1.5 degrees C warming, but can be significantly increased to reduce the negative consequences of climate change.

Don't forget naturally occurring. The IPCC number is 0.06°/decade or 0.6°/century if there were no humans on Earth.

You tell me since you seem to believe in them all.

I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it. (Albert Einstein, 1954)

I believe in Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists, not in a God who concerns himself with the fates and actions of human beings. (Albert Einstein)

If the level of grants do not continue at the rate they have been at since AGW became an issue,
it will be an emergency, and the universities have increased the budget, as if such funding would continue!!!:doh

What is their recommendation to correct the crisis?

Does any part of it involve the reduction of the expulsion of CO2 laced hot air from Universities?

And yet science shows pretty conclusively that we are in a pretty cool point in time in the context of the Interglacials of the last half million years.

We are also at comparatively high point in the concentration of CO2 in our atmosphere. According to the popular science of the day, this is absolutely impossible.

Care to square that circle for us?

climate4you welcome

The last four glacial periods and interglacial periods are shown in the diagram below (Fig.2), covering the last 420,000 years in Earth's climatic history.

Fig.2. Reconstructed global temperature over the past 420,000 years based on the Vostok ice core from the Antarctica (Petit et al. 2001). The record spans over four glacial periods and five interglacials, including the present. The horizontal line indicates the modern temperature. The red square to the right indicates the time interval shown in greater detail in the following figure.
