Continue to subsidize that infrastructure, while defunding Amtrak and other rail initiatives, insisting that they should be self-sustainable. Fast forward to 2019. High speed rail cannot be funded because all this other infrastructure is in the way.

It was a conspiracy that changed the face of urban landscapes across North America. In 1922, Alfred P. Sloan, head of General Motors, created a working group charged with undermining and replacing the electric trolley. The group’s first act was to launch a bus line that arrived a minute before the streetcar and followed the same route. The trolley line soon shutdown. At the time, there were hundreds of trolley lines in Los Angeles so it was not particularly noteworthy when one shut down. But it was a harbinger of things to come.

What about, upgrading and expanding existing railroads to one hundred mph minimum?

Come on USA, you can do better than that! Many high-speed trains in Europe regularly top 200 mph.

Sure. Two hundred fifty mph minimum should be a goal. We have better computer aided design software, in modern times.

What is your opinion of "going vertical" with our railroads; we could prefabricate quad-sections of railroad that could fit into an existing road bed.

Capacity could increase from "two lanes to four lanes" using existing rights of way.

Passenger rail is primarily operated by Amtrak. One of the problems with Amtrak is that they share the tracks with freight rail companies, who own and maintain the tracks. Amtrak leases the use of most of the tracks. A major change in this philosophy would be required.

You should take a look at some real statistics that matter. For example - BTUs Used/GDP Unit. European countries kick US butt with a much lower number. Think about it - if they can produce their product, using half the number of BTU's, they are at an incredible advantage.
