Even the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, have to acknowledge the growing influence of the global climate movement.

‘OPEC's secretary-general has complained of what he called "unscientific" attacks on the oil industry by climate change campaigners, calling them "perhaps the greatest threat to our industry going forward".

Speaking in Vienna after a meeting of the oil producers' club and its partners, Mohammed Barkindo said that as extreme weather events linked to the climate crisis became more common, "there is a growing mass mobilisation of world opinion... against oil".’

*yawn* Wake me when people actually get their **** together on the issue of climate chance first.

Too many people butting heads over something that isn't even a proven event is probably one of the worst ways that we can waste our time.

Even federal agencies under Donald Trump acknowledge the urgent need for action on manmade global warming.

“The impacts of climate change are already being felt in communities across the country. More frequent and intense extreme weather and climate-related events, as well as changes in average climate conditions, are expected to continue to damage infrastructure, ecosystems, and social systems that provide essential benefits to communities. Future climate change is expected to further disrupt many areas of life, exacerbating existing challenges to prosperity posed by aging and deteriorating infrastructure, stressed ecosystems, and economic inequality. Impacts within and across regions will not be distributed equally. People who are already vulnerable, including lower-income and other marginalized communities, have lower capacity to prepare for and cope with extreme weather and climate-related events and are expected to experience greater impacts. Prioritizing adaptation actions for the most vulnerable populations would contribute to a more equitable future within and across communities. Global action to significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions can substantially reduce climate-related risks and increase opportunities for these populations in the longer term.”

Greta Thunberg welcome the criticism from OPEC’s secretary general.

“Swedish teenage activist Greta Thunberg has welcomed criticism from OPEC’s secretary general, describing it as the “biggest compliment yet” to a growing movement of young protesters demanding action over climate change.”

While Saudi Aramco, one of the world’s biggest oil companies are also worried.

"Saudi Aramco will continue to be “significantly impacted” by the international oil price, the document noted, warning: “Climate change concerns and impacts could reduce global demand for hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon-based products and could cause the company to incur costs or invest additional capital.”

Climate policies such as renewable energy mandates, carbon pricing and energy efficiency standards are expected to dampen demand for fossil fuels, it said. Trends in electrification of transport and clean energy prices will also be critical."

As I've seen, yet those same agencies are still butting heads on how best to measure such information and even outside agencies are not on the same page.

If I wanted to see people bicker over a bunch of mismatched stories. I'd go to my family's reunion.

Or you can't just look at the post from climate deniers on this forum that can't even agree on if global temperature are increasing or decreasing.

Also it show how overwhelming the scientific consensus is then even federal agencies, under a president that have claimed that climate change is a Chinese hoax, have to acknowledge the urgent need for action.

Donald J. Trump on Twitter: "The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive."

Also Trump tried to influence the agencies by for example appointing a former climate denier as head of NASA. There the result instead was that Jim Bridenstine, a Republican, looked at the evidence and now acknowledge the need for action on climate change.

Okay, so someone who is skeptical of some information being thrown around. Is now called a climate denier?

We are still in the early days of the effects of Climate Change. Do you not understand that if we don't act now, the long-term effects will be irreversible for generations? The science is not in question for the vast majority of Climatologists - take your pick --- 97%, 95%, 92%....

i would say that innovation is the greatest threat to fossil fuels. this innovation will happen whether we address the serious threat of climate change or not. a moonshot to replace fossil fuels in thirty years would be a good idea, but we aren't much for good ideas these days.

Yes and back when I was younger, even in the early 80s. They were still saying that it was too late to save the world.

Like I said. When they actually get their **** together on the issue.

I was younger in the '80s too. Don't recall these conversations. There are always doomsdayers. I recall a large contingent of Christians claiming biblical evidence of end times. That doesn't mean that all Christians were jumping on this bandwagon. Likewise with scientists. Even today, most scientists believe the world will continue just fine. However, most also believe that the effects of Climate Change will have serious implications for society and other living inhabitants of this world.

You guys are the new, ignorant, doomsdayers.

Lets get this straight. I know full well that climate change is a thing and that man has an impact on it. I recycle, I drive a hybrid, I do my part. But I have seen more than enough people, be it academics and scientist, even when I was in college. Just continually butt heads over this kind of information.

Then you have people that do it for nothing more than either political gain, monetary gain, or even recognition and it doesn't help to fill me with confidence in the least.

Yes innovations will make renewables outcompete fossil fuels. While having people organizing and making their voices heard will speed up the tranistion. Something that is badly needed because we are now running out of time in avoiding many of the devasting effects of climate change.

Yes you can people that deny the overwhelming evidence just because it goes against their existing beliefs deniers. Also the deniers are unconvincing that they can't even convince eachother. For example as I mention they can't even agree among themself if there will be global cooling or global warming or somethere between.

Also very sceptical people and organizations have looked at the evidedence and admitted that the C02 emissions needs to be drasticly reduced. Like I mentioned Trump's pick for head of NASA and also for example oil companies like Exxon.

Climate change is a study of futuristic events. Yes there is some past history, but the earth is still in the early stages of the effects of climate change. The futuristic models have huge ranges of variability of Climate Sensitivity. This actually reinforces your point that scientists do butt heads on these studies. Some see more feedback than others. It is wise of the IPCC to publish the various ranges. It demonstrates that they are NOT "stuck" on preconceived notions.

BINGO...even if you're the biggest climate denier on the planet, if there's a chance to introduce competition, why would you be against it if it results in at least a stab in the direction of cleanliness, efficiency, lower cost of operation, fewer moving parts, better application of torque and more durability?

Eventually electric vehicles will be cleaner across the board as we transition to a better mix of fuels for power generation, eventually charge times will hit a tipping point where they are close enough to gasoline refueling times that few will care very much, and the other points I mentioned are already a reality.
And the economies of scale haven't even kicked in yet, at which point we will also start having conversations about cost of product as well.

The transition away from fossil fuels won't occur like a light switch being flicked off, it will occur gradually.
Saudi Arabia already knows this which is why they are aggressively trying to position themselves in renewables, along with China, India, Germany and a few other nations.

The entire argument against electric vehicles, even twenty-two years after the introduction of the first mass produced hybrid car (Prius) STILL boils down to a bunch of Luddites and buggy whip makers fretting about their loss of dominance.
Meanwhile General Motors announced TWENTY new BEV (Battery Electric Vehicles) between now and 2025.

Tough beans. Competition is coming and you can't stop it no matter what you try.

I know full well that climate change is an actual thing. But my issue is when people get to some rather drastic heights when ranging out what needs to be done.

Yeah, let's do nothing until it's 100% proven. Oh, by the time it's proven, we're ****ed.

Being hyperbolic doesn't help anyone.

Doing nothing about a situation also doesn't help anyone.

Basically the world is about BALANCE.

Too much water, we die, of drowning, diseases and all kinds of things. Too little water, we die.

Too much oxygen, we die, too little oxygen, we die.

Too much sun, we die, too little sun, we die.

We're not in balance with our world. That's going to lead to problems at some point in the future. Oil doesn't allow us to be in balance.

You should then be angry at the politicians that have delayed and continue to delay action on climate change. Because you longer action on climate change the more drastic action will be needed to both reduce greenhouse gases and to deal with the devastating effects of climate change. There we are running out of time to avoid many of devasting effects because that action on climate change have been delayed for a such long time.

Limiting Warming to 1.5deg Celsius Will Require Drastic Action, IPCC Says - Scientific American

That if you don’t for example like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez policies on climate change, then you should demand that the politicians you support should come up with better plans.

Also countries that have taken action on climate change are doing pretty good. For example Denmark, that got 68 percent of their electricity from renewables last year, and Sweden, that implemented a carbon tax as early as 1995. rank high on for example Forbes best country for business list and the Best Countries for Quality of Life list.

Politicians are listening to the young climate activists.

"German Chancellor Angela Merkel conceded Friday that her government was driven to act faster on climate change by young activists like teenaged Greta Thunberg, who was speaking at rally in Berlin the same day.

"They certainly drove us to speed up" efforts to change policy, said Merkel at a press conference while nearby in the German capital the 16-year-old Swedish activist addressed the latest "Fridays for Future" rally."

Yeah, AOC's examples are actually unobtainable for us at this point, especially if one wants to bring in that whole crap she started with her GND. Eliminating air travel, and converting entire sections of the country for rail travel. Hell, California has been trying to get a simple section of rail constructed for about a decade now and the project Cortez suggested, would dwarf it more than several times over.

I also don't think using countries like Denmark, or Sweden as something of a benchmark. Because even the largest of them, which would be Sweden. Is still outsized by our own country twenty times over.

On our scale, most of the functions implemented would be unappeasable without severe backing to keep them afloat.
