In climate science, science met politics and science lost.
At COP1, the international climate meeting of 1990, a revolt led by delegates from Brazil tore the scientific assessment of climate away from the scientists of the IPCC and gave it to bureaucrats and advocates of catastrophic global warming. They did this in hope of getting money out of rich nations for climate reparations.
The scientific group charged with examining the role of CO2 in the climate had concluded in 1990 that they could not be sure that man made CO2 had any effect on the climate. The scientist heading the group thought that it would be several decades before they could be sure either way.
But this wasn't fast enough for the alarmists, who were gaining political strength and hysterical urgency. In the end the honest scientists lost control. Scientists who tried to hold fast to scientific rigor were marginalized and ostracized as traitors to science, unsupported by their academies. Skepticism became intolerable. Even the American Physics Society proclaimed global warming a truth that was "incontrovertible." Given that every physicist knows that in empirical science there is nothing beyond challenge their declaration was the clearest message that what was being defended was not science but dogma.
And so now 28 years later we have arrived, corruption spread across our institutions of science. Whatever their motives they opened a gap for huge political forces to sweep aside their principles and processes and to empower among them those willing to participate in the corruption.

According to the criteria set up by the IPCC scientists before the COP1 meeting, there is still no evidence that man made CO2 affects the climate.
