Climate strikes spread worldwide as students call for action

[h=1]Extinction First[/h]Posted on 18 Apr 19 by RICHARD DRAKE 17 Comments
Having agreed with a few other Cliscep founders to post up Ben Pile’s excellent Twitter thoughts on Extinction Rebellion before the early hours of Thursday had – yawn – expired, I took First Bus out of Weston-super-Mare towards home and was greeted by this on the top deck. Someone had decided that XR was more … Continue reading

[h=2]Kenney wins landslide in Alberta against carbon tax: vows War Room against energy activists[/h]
[h=3]Yet another big win against carbon taxes: Abbott, Trump, Fordand now Kenney[/h]
Provinces of Canada.
The first pledge was to get rid of the carbon tax. The victory was a scorching 63 to 24 seats, or 55% to 32%.
Alberta is a conservative province of Canada with 4 million people. It’s wealthy from oil, gas and agriculture. (It’s not that different to Queensland and WA.). Jason Kenney is on a mission to get the province back from environmental zealots: fergoodnesssake, he even vowed to set up a ‘War Room’ against energy activists.
The greens were the main target and the people said “Yes”.
Conservatives win big victory in Alberta, Canada
The right-leaning United Conservative Party (UCP) has taken power in the oil-rich Canadian province of Alberta, routing the left-leaning NDP.
[h=4]It was a landslide victory:[/h]

…Kenney defeated center-left incumbent Rachel Notley, 55, whose New Democratic Party snapped four decades of conservative rule in 2015. His UCP won 63 seats in the provincial legislature, against 24 for Notley’s NDP,
He’s vowed to get stalled pipelines built, scrap the province’s carbon tax, and create a “war room” to hit back at anti-oil-sands campaigners. He also pledged to cut corporate taxes and balance the province’s books in his first term.
– Kevin Orland, Bloomberg
The Rachel Notley New Democratic government was a one term wonder in Alberta:
The United Conservative Party’s win will mark a sharp turn in the province’s environmental policy. The NDP introduced a number of stringent climate measures in 2015 that included the province’s first ever economy-wide carbon tax. Kenney has promised to repeal that tax as one of his first policy moves after taking power.

[h=3]First order of business to get rid of the carbon tax[/h]After it’s gone, Trudeau will force a federal one on Alberta, and Kenney will oppose that in court:

Also the Canadian tax will be net positive for most famillies.

"For example, a Manitoba family will receive a $336 rebate in 2019 compared to its increased costs of $232. A similar family in Saskatchewan will receive $598 compared to its higher costs of $403. In Ontario, families will receive $300 to offset its $244 in carbon taxes. And in New Brunswick a $248 rebate more than offsets the average household cost of $202. The rebates will more than double by 2022 as the carbon tax rises, and the net financial benefit to households will grow over time."

People of all ages are inspired to join the global climate movement.

'Parents and grandparents around the world are mobilising in support of the youth strikes for climate movement that has swept the globe.
Under the banner Parents for the Future, 34 groups from 16 countries on four continents have issued an open letter. It demands urgent action to fight climate change and prevent temperatures rising by more than 1.5C, beyond which scientists say droughts, floods and heatwaves will get significantly worse.

“What our kids are telling us is what science has been telling us for many years – there is no time left,” the letter says. “We now owe it to them to act.”

“Parents – we are everywhere in society: in classrooms as teachers, in fields as farmers, in factories as workers, in hospitals as healers, in boardrooms as CEOs, in legislatures as policymakers,” it says. “We have the power to build this safe, just and clean future for our kids.”'

There even global investors are acknoweding the urgent need for action on climate change.

'Global investors today called on governments around the world to step up action to address climate change. 415 investors, with $32 trillion in assets-under-management, are behind the call-to-action as signatories of the 2018 Global Investor Statement to Governments on Climate Change1.

The ‘Global Investor Statement’ reaches global leaders as the United Nation’s COP24 global climate change conference in Poland enters its second week, and is the single largest policy intervention from investors on climate change. The Statement asks governments to strengthen their Nationally Determined Contributions to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and to enact policies to facilitate the world’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

Three overarching priorities are highlighted in the Statement for global leaders to address: achieving the Paris Agreement’s goals; accelerating private sector investment into the low carbon transition and committing to improve climate-related financial reporting. Additional detail is provided in an accompanying briefing paper also shared with leaders.'

Thankfully more and more people both in the US and globally are acknowledging the urgent need for actions on climate change.

Earth Day: How people worldwide view climate change | Pew Research Center

While this have also lead to that denier propagnada have become more and more extreme and for example calling kids weirdos and cult members. Because the goal is no longer to try to convince a mayority of people, but instead to keep hard core deniers energized and also keep climate change a partisan issue in the US.

Economic freedom and free trade are not the same thing.

My point is that free trade hurts or position. I'll bet Sweden had rather strict import regulations.

Do you have any source for that US have more free trade with the rest of the world compared to Sweden? That Sweden is part of EU and its internal market that includes both Eastern European countries that have lower salaries and living conditions as well as economical powerhouses like Germany. EU also have a lot of free trade agreements with the rest of the world that applies to all member states.

Fossil fuel companies have for decades delayed the transition away from fossil fuel. By for example lobbying and massive disinformation.

"A fossil fuel–backed industry group was able to influence the process behind the United Nations climate assessments for decades, using lobbyists and industry-funded scientists to manipulate international negotiations, a cache of recently discovered documents reveals.

The documents include hundreds of briefings, meeting minutes, notes, and correspondence from the Global Climate Coalition (GCC). They were released Thursday by the Climate Investigations Center in collaboration with DeSmog and Climate Liability News. The documents date from 1989 and continue through 2002, when the lobbying group disbanded as its fossil fuel industry backers succumbed to public pressure to disavow its tactics.

The documents show how the GCC influenced international negotiations, manipulated the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) process, and undertook a disinformation campaign designed to cast doubt on mainstream climate science."

So it is very positive and important with the growing global climate movement their more and more people all the world are organizing and demanding action on climate change. There young people are leading and inspiring the movement.

"As scientists make increasingly dire predictions about the future habitability of the planet, climate activists are being radicalized at younger and younger ages. Many can’t vote, but they are making their voices heard: striking from school, filing lawsuits, staging sit-ins on Capitol Hill. On March 15th, inspired by teen Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, more than a million students poured into streets around the world to protest adults’ abject failure to curb carbon emissions."

Over 1.4 million marched on #SchoolStrike4Climate yesterday according to the latest update. 2,083 locations in 125 countries and on all continents. Pictured above; Montreal, Canada.

Yet another fine example of leftist indoctrination. Just like the Hitlerjugend ("Hitler's Youth") during 1930s Germany. Once again we see history repeating itself.

I know that the EU does protect itself with tariffs far better than the USA, and that they have an advantage over us by their taxation methods.

I notice you linked information overload rather than finding a pertinent paragraph or two.

Yes, that is what your bloggers tell you. The reality is that energy companies will support the best way of making revenue, and green energy isn't there yet.

Will you ever be wise enough to see past propaganda?

Yep.

Liberals are doomed to repeat history, because they don't learn from it.

Noted again that somebody requested a link for one of your preposterous statements, and you simply provided more personal rhetoric.

Yes, the NeoNazi-lover-President and other right wingers should know about Hitler's Youth. If the dishonesty of classifying a bunch of Environmentalists as NeoNazis gives you some kind of morbid satisfaction, I can only assume that you are actually a NeoNazi supporter.

Noted again that somebody requested a link for one of your preposterous statements, and you simply provided more personal rhetoric.

Noted again your failure to comprehend.

I asks for pertinent quotes, and links they are in, and in full context. Must I specify that every time?

It is you that have not been able to provide any source for your own claim that US have more free trade than Sweden. Instead you want me to disprove your claim. That this can consider a bit lazy.

New technologies like renewables needs to support to gain the necissary economy of scale and technology development. There the support to renewables have been very succesfully because renewables are already start to outcompete fossil fuel on producing electricity on demand.

“In fact, the LCOE for multi-hour lithium-ion batteries is falling to the point that batteries co-located with solar or wind projects are starting to compete, in many markets and without subsidy, with coal- and gas-fired generation for the provision of ‘dispatchable power’ that can be delivered whenever the grid needs it (as opposed to only when the wind is blowing, or the sun is shining),” the report notes.”

Report: Levelized Cost of Energy for Lithium-Ion Batteries Is Plummeting | Greentech Media

There this transition could have come a lot sooner if wasn't for the destructvie influence of the fossil fuel companies.

It only means that a lot of people are stupid and more of them keep falling for this delusional mass hysteria.

Trump appointed a former climate denier as head NASA. So Jim Bridenstine could have used NASA's climate reserach funds to disprove the urgent the need for action on climate change if it was just "mass hysteria" as you claim. Instead the evidence of manmade global warming is so overwhelming that Jim Bridenstine now acknowledge the scientific consensus and the urgent need for action.
