Climate strikes spread worldwide as students call for action

School pupils worldwide have abandoned classrooms for a day of protest against climate change.

3/15/19
India, South Korea, Australia and the US are among the countries where teenagers are already on strike. The day of action is expected to embrace about 100 countries. They are inspired by Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg, who protests weekly outside Sweden's parliament. Scientists say tougher measures are needed to cut global warming. The globally co-ordinated children's protests - promoted through posts on Twitter and other social media - have been going on for several months. On Thursday Greta Thunberg's campaigning earned her a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. In January at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the 16-year-old told top executives and politicians that "on climate change, we have to acknowledge that we have failed".

Kudos to the next generation

Over 1.4 million marched on #SchoolStrike4Climate yesterday according to the latest update. 2,083 locations in 125 countries and on all continents. Pictured above; Montreal, Canada.

Like a herd of sheep among a fad movement. Teenagers are emotional and go along with the group-think.

And they know as little about it and are as easily influenced about it as you'd expect with children ... adults behaving the same way don't have those excuses.

I don't think the climate gives a damn about what the students are doing. They may as well be protesting gravity.

Now why'd you have to go and them ideas?
Now 350.org is gonna claim every time oil is extracted from the earth we lose one meter/second squared of g for every thousand gallons extracted due to reduced earth mass.

Indoctrination at a global level.

Be worried people.

[h=1]CLIMATE CONTROL: BRAINWASHING IN SCHOOLS[/h][FONT=&quot]From the GWPF (UK): Executive summary We have found examples of serious errors, misleading claims, and bias through inadequate treatment of climate issues in school teaching materials. These include many widely-used textbooks, teaching-support resources, and pupil projects. The National Curriculum has recently been reviewed by the government, but the proposed changes seem unlikely to prevent…

[h=2]Leading Swiss Publisher Calls Climate Movement A “Mass Trance” …Climate Hysteria Understood As “Absolute Truth”[/h]By P Gosselin on 16. March 2019
The publisher of conservative Swiss weekly “Weltwoche” and SVP National Council member Roger Köppel commented in an interview with the Baseler Zeitung (BaZ)on children skipping school to demonstrate for climate, and the climate movement in general.
In the interview Köppel called the climate movement a “political mass trance that that is currently rolling over us” and that children have been prompted to skip school and protest an “infantilization” of politics.
In the interview, Köppel notes that the planet has warmed “only one degree since 1860” and that this increase is nothing unusual in a historical context. . . .

How long have I been saying the rest of the world needs to control their emissions before we worry about ours any more?

US have greater opportunity not only to reduce C02 emission but also save money trough for example energy efficiency measure. Because US C02 emissions, energy use and electric power consumption per capita is more than double that of many other developed countries.

US is also one of world's most innovative and biggest economy so American investments can have a huge impact then it comes to technological development and economy of scale of renewables and other technologies.

Also having countries, communinities, corporation and individuals leading the way in investing in renewables have drastically reduced the cost of renewables. So that renewables are starting to outcompete fossil fuels.

“A new report reveals 42% of global coal capacity is currently unprofitable, and the United States could save $78 billion by closing coal-fired power plants in line with the Paris Climate Accord’s climate goals. This industry-disrupting trend comes down to dollars and cents, as the cost of renewable energy dips below fossil fuel generation.

Across the U.S., renewable energy is beating coal on cost: The price to build new wind and solar has fallen below the cost of running existing coal-fired power plants in Red and Blue states. For example, Colorado’s Xcel will retire 660 megawatts (MW) of coal capacity ahead of schedule in favor of renewable sources and battery storage, and reduce costs in the process. Midwestern utility MidAmerican will be the first utility to reach 100% renewable energy by 2020 without increasing customer rates, and Indiana’s NIPSCO will replace 1.8 gigawatts (GW) of coal with wind and solar.”

We are running out of time in limiting the devastating effects of manmade global warming.

We have 12 years to limit climate change catastrophe, warns UN | Environment | The Guardian

While at the same time there are things to be hopefully abou. For example that the growing climate movement are making a real impact. There for example Greta Thunberg have spoken both at the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Poland and at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland. While also now being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Deniers are also becoming a smaller and smaller minority. For example Americans concern about climate change and its devastating effects have increased to record levels, according to the The Yale polling.

Americans’ climate change concerns surge to record levels, poll shows | Environment | The Guardian

While even federal agencies under Donald Trump warns about the devasting effects of manmade global warming.

"The impacts of climate change are already being felt in communities across the country. More frequent and intense extreme weather and climate-related events, as well as changes in average climate conditions, are expected to continue to damage infrastructure, ecosystems, and social systems that provide essential benefits to communities. Future climate change is expected to further disrupt many areas of life, exacerbating existing challenges to prosperity posed by aging and deteriorating infrastructure, stressed ecosystems, and economic inequality. Impacts within and across regions will not be distributed equally. People who are already vulnerable, including lower-income and other marginalized communities, have lower capacity to prepare for and cope with extreme weather and climate-related events and are expected to experience greater impacts. Prioritizing adaptation actions for the most vulnerable populations would contribute to a more equitable future within and across communities. Global action to significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions can substantially reduce climate-related risks and increase opportunities for these populations in the longer term."

I'm shocked! that all our coal baron supporters showed up. Shocked I say lol.

It's not as simple as ypou say.

We have been the leaders of modernizing insulation and efficiency. That extra few percent gets exponentially expensive. We simply cannot replace overnight, power plants with more modern ones. We need to let their lifetime expire, then build newer technology to mitigate costs. You act as if you sold tear down and rebuild your house ever 5 years for better efficiency as newer technology is available. - pretty stupid huh - Now think abou5t that on the scvale you ask us to do. You should instead be pissed off at the other nations who are building less efficient and dirty coal plants, when newer technology is now available.

So?

Do you expect we should lower out standard of living?

We have already done more than our fair share.

Yes, there are reasons for that. Primarily, coal is being forced to only operate as a supplement to fill in the gaps that renewable energy cannot provide. They are no longer operating at close to capacity.

Across the U.S., renewable energy is beating coal on cost: The price to build new wind and solar has fallen below the cost of running existing coal-fired power plants in Red and Blue states. There calculations are flawed in that solar and wind cannot generate on demand power. Get rid of the coal plants, and we will either pay significantly more for power as we add strage of some sort or another, or we will have an authoritarian rule dictating how much power we can use at what time.

I searched for information on that. The report is a proposal to the state legislature.

Such things usually end up costing multiples more money when our idiot legislators approve them.

Do you really trust the profit motives involved, and our public servants that much?

Every day these oil-funded groups follow-up with these goofy articles to attempt to focus away from the latest news to mankind's greatest challenge of Climate Change. What does that tell you about the deep pockets of the oil industry, and their misinformation campaign?

What "oil-funded groups?"

If the goofy crap comes out every day, it's funded. If it's funded against Climate Change, it's oil-funded.
Why? Even if all the catastrophic high end predictions were correct, do you think it would change the energy people have become used to?
The energy our modern society derives from hydrocarbons, is not some bad habit that can be stopped, but a requirement to our lifestyle.
People will continue to buy energy made from hydrocarbon sources, until something better is available.

Many have stopped our dependence on fossil fuels. Mine is down over 90 percent.
