Climate strikes spread worldwide as students call for action

Also, a poll doesn't reflect reality. How many people say they will do something because it sounds good, but then never acts upon it?
Correct, we have to factor in that people tend to look out for their own interest.
For many households an extra $20 a month means quite a bit.

In my case, the extra 10% hits me the worse during the holiday season. Especially if I have a long term guest. The extra hot water alone... Now I can afford it, but I make more than at least 80% to 90% of the population.

In My area the peaks are in the summer, my usage ranges from 600 Kwh in winter months, to up to 2000 kwh in summer months.
Every year it seems some elderly person dies in the summer, because they cannot afford to run the AC.
If the prices go up, so do the number of people who will be squeezed by the increase.

I think 32% is a pretty respectable number. It show that people do care - just the fact that they'd pay anything extra...

You also have the fact that US have double the electricity use of many other developed countries. So it can be great possibilities in energy efficient measuers.

Good public transport systems and bike lanes is much more important if you want to help struggling famillies. Because a car can not only be a huge investment for many but also be a huge financial risk because car repairs can cost hundreds of dollars. There a car break down can also mean no work and no money if you don't have public transport as an alternative to get to work.

Also it will be low income famillies that will be hurt the most by climate change.

"The impacts of climate change are already being felt in communities across the country. More frequent and intense extreme weather and climate-related events, as well as changes in average climate conditions, are expected to continue to damage infrastructure, ecosystems, and social systems that provide essential benefits to communities. Future climate change is expected to further disrupt many areas of life, exacerbating existing challenges to prosperity posed by aging and deteriorating infrastructure, stressed ecosystems, and economic inequality. Impacts within and across regions will not be distributed equally. People who are already vulnerable, including lower-income and other marginalized communities, have lower capacity to prepare for and cope with extreme weather and climate-related events and are expected to experience greater impacts. Prioritizing adaptation actions for the most vulnerable populations would contribute to a more equitable future within and across communities. Global action to significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions can substantially reduce climate-related risks and increase opportunities for these populations in the longer term."

The only time public transport helps is when it is provided where the people need it.
In many places in the US, there are many miles between public transport services.
Also I think I would be a bit hesitant about citing the Fourth National Climate Assessment,
it is mostly a propaganda piece, with demonstrable errors.

US have many big cities, there public transport is a much more effieceint form of transport in big cities to car. Because building cities for cars leads to massive congestion, huge level of air pollutions and that massive amount of valuable land is used for parking spaces and roads.

Also Trump appointed a former climate denier as head of NASA. So Jim Bridenstine, a Republican from Oklahoma, could have used NASA's climate research fund to disprove the Fourth National Climate Assessment, if it was "mostly a propaganda piece, with demonstrable errors" as you claim. Instead NASA and many other federal agencies with department heads appointed by Trump stand behind the Fourth National Climate Assessment.

You guys sure do get duped with short snippets of quotes when they lack context, and then they lie to you about context.

We've been over this before. Have you forgotten?

This type of propaganda is for the weak minded. Those who are too lazy to look for the facts in the full context and want to be told what to believe.

Those of you with weak minds, and believe what the priests of AGW, may not want to see the truth. He speaks for about 3 minutes about related to his statement taken out of context.

His snippet taken out of context is in the 3 minute block between about 24:09 to 27:30 in the video. It might be interesting to start just before 22:30 and go till 29:10.

You true believers are pathetic, in the context you believe in quotes taken out of context.

I pity you guys to be duped into thinking we was a denier who changed. His views never changed.

Efficient in some cities, not all, efficient in some ways not all! Public transportation is not a one size fit all perfect solution.

Building big cities for cars simply doesn't work because roads and parking take up to much valuable land. While also even with massive investment in roads you still end up with massive congestions and very long commuting times.

Thank you for the video. There Jim Bridenstine, a Republican appointed by Trump say that he support NASA climate research and ensure it is free from partisan rethoric. So it is therefore intersting that NASA stand behind the Fourth National Climate Assesment that acknowledge the urgent need for action on manmade global warming from C02.

Fourth National Climate Assessment

In the video Bridenstine also show his support for national academics of science that have made this statement about climate change.

"Observations throughout the world make it clear that climate change is occurring, and rigorous
scientific research concludes that the greenhouse gases emitted by human activities are the
primary driver. This conclusion is based on multiple independent lines of evidence and the vast
body of peer-reviewed science.
There is strong evidence that ongoing climate change is having broad negative impacts on
society, including the global economy, natural resources, and human health. For the United
States, climate change impacts include greater threats of extreme weather events, sea level rise,
and increased risk of regional water scarcity, heat waves, wildfires, and the disturbance of
biological systems. The severity of climate change impacts is increasing and is expected to
increase substantially in the coming decades.1"

There this a big shift from what he said in the video from 2013 there you have a direct link to in it in the article are linked to.

I know the car only approach is not perfect, but neither is the public transportation only approach.
Freedom is about people making the choices that work best for themselves, not placing limitations on which choices that have available.

It will be a slow process. When the blinders come off, and other variables get properly evaluated, all that will change.

[h=1]The New Green Threat: Extinction Rebellion[/h][FONT=&quot]Translated from The Ilmastotiede blog If you’ve seen news reports of this winter’s climate campaigns, you may have spotted logos and banners of Extinction Rebellion. Is it just another new climate movement? It didn’t really show up on my radar until after I started wondering why climate activism suddenly seems to be following very similar…

Freedom is about people making the choices that work best for themselves, not placing limitations on which choices that have available.

Especially American cities lack public transport and bike lanes. There the cities have instead spend huge amount of money on roads and also for example force private business to provide parking spaces.

There this for example have lead to massive congestion, high level of air pollution and also put financial burdens and risks on struggling familles that becomes dependent on car ownerships.

Your argument does nto change the fact, that only having public transportation available greatly limits peoples choices of where to live and
how to travel.

I don’t know of any cities that have banned all cars. While you have many examples of cities that have invested in public transport and bike lanes and drastically reduced the dependency on cars. Thereby helping a lot of struggling families and creating better and more efficient cities.

You ideology would greatly limit the choices of where and how people live and work.
You are suggesting everyone would be better off if they only had public transportation as a choice.

I think more than concerned citizens, we can thank the larger usage of public transportation on the fact cars are more expensive to buy and repair. With the rising costs, and COLA not keeping up, there are increasing people who simply cannot afford a car, lose a car to repair costs, or cannot afford insurance.

This is at least one factor that increases the public's dependency on bicycles and public transportation.

In many European cities people have the choices between both public transport, bicycles walking and car for transport. While in American cities the only viable choice can be cars. There many American cities and local community even lacks sidewalks. Thereby hindering the movement and freedom for many people.

The surprising politics of sidewalks | Popular Science

This also leads to that Americans have to pay a much larger share of their income and also spend more time in transport.
