Trump Parrots Anti-Science Misinformation As He Readies Climate Change Panel

The president shared Patrick Moore’s anti-science theories on global warming with his more than 58 million followers.

Patrick Moore, co-founder of Greenpeace: “The whole climate crisis is not only Fake News, it’s Fake Science. There is no climate crisis, there’s weather and climate all around the world, and in fact carbon dioxide is the main building block of all life.” @foxandfriends Wow!

President Donald Trump on Tuesday once again used his Twitter platform to share misinformation about climate change to his 59 million followers, quoting a “Fox & Friends” guest who falsely claimed global warming isn’t caused by man and could actually benefit many people. Former Greenpeace Canada President Patrick Moore, a longtime nuclear energy industry shill, denied that human activity fuels climate change and claimed the phenomenon doesn’t pose an imminent danger to life on earth, despite the mountains of scientific evidence that suggest otherwise. He dubbed the climate crisis as “fake news” and chalked up the catastrophic rise in global warming over the last few decades as simply “weather.” Though Trump and Fox News described Moore as a co-founder of Greenpeace, a major environmental advocacy group that supports climate change science, the organization has long denied such a characterization. “Although Mr. Moore played a significant role in Greenpeace Canada for several years, he did not found Greenpeace,” the group said in a statement in 2010, adding that Moore often “misrepresents” himself in the media as an environmental “expert” despite his anti-science views. “Patrick Moore has been a paid spokesman for a variety of polluting industries for more than 30 years, including the timber, mining, chemical and the aquaculture industries,” according to the statement.

He is both a policy adviser at the right-wing libertarian Heartland Institute, a group at the front of the climate denial movement, and a board member of the CO2 Coalition, a fringe think tank that argues humans and the planet benefit from carbon dioxide being pumped into the atmosphere. Trump is preparing to convene an ad-hoc panel of scientists and researchers to challenge the scientific consensus that climate change is an immediate crisis driven by fossil fuels. The panel will conduct “adversarial scientific peer review” of near-universally accepted climate science, according to reporting by E&E News. One of its primary targets being the National Climate Assessment, a federal report released in November that concluded planetary warming “could increase by 9°F (5°C) or more by the end of this century” if governments don’t implement dramatic emission reductions. Trump’s reported pick to lead the committee is William Happer, a retired Princeton physics professor with no expertise in climatology.

Trump is packing his "climate science" review panel with global warming deniers and individuals with absolutely no climate-science academic credentials.

Basically, pseudo-climate-scientists. These are the modern "flat-earthers" ... funded by energy barons and extraction/polluting industries.

Our Earth loving Trump has also proposed a White House budget cut of 31% to the US Environmental Protection Agency. He just loves nature SO MUCH.

The usual ad hominems which substitute for substance among AGW advocates.

Quite simply, Trump doesn't give a flying **** because he's not going to be around 50 years from now when "****" starts to hit the proverbial fan.

And the ad hominem chorus joins in.

WAIT AOC says it's TWELVE!

Ah. One of the usual coal baron lobbyists shows up.

There's nothing to deny. Just the usual claims (without evidence) of shilling for industry, and the usual attempt to delegitimize skeptical organizations. Neither needs or deserves an answer.

Right just because Trump picked shills for industry does not mean they are shilling for industry. Denier logic is impeccable.

Rogue Valley:

President Trump's packing of the climate change panel provides a catalytic opportunity. The scientific community should pack Washington DC in droves and keep pressure on the House of Representatives to shut down Mr. Trump's every anti-climate move. Then the massed members of the scientific community should fan out to every public and private primary and secondary school, every college, every think-tank or NGO, every university other than their own and present the very persuasive case for man-made climate change and the precautionary principle in a sustained tsunami while all the deniers are eating cheeseburgers and fries with President Trump in DC.

Once the fortnight-long counter offensive ends the House of Reps and the general Science community should make the first Monday of every month "Climate Day" in which virtual protests against climate change denial and teach-in workshops on climate science and the precautionary principle are given and regularly reinforced in all educational facilities. Eventually the movement will be so popular and so strong that no combination of special interests, targetted by a selective BDS movement, will be effective in blocking reforms and regulations needed and no senator will be stupid enough to tank his or her career by blocking such reforms and programmes.

It's time for a climate change Schwerpunkt and the deniers are in the minority and so can be deluged into irrelevance by numbers and the preponderance of evidence. Climate change politics will become a war by other means and as Joseph Stalin said, quantity has a quality of its own. So a populist climate reform movement informed and guided by the preponderance of the scientific community will cause a great flood of reform demand to inundate and wash away the deniers in order to prevent the great floods of water from rising sea levels and torrential rains which climate change is already beginning to bring.

Cheers.

As a climate skeptic, I hope you keep speaking out on behalf of AGW advocacy.

Jack Hays:

You will be drowned out by the numbers and by the volume of voices who don't agree with your obstinate skepticism. You may be priceless but you are not great, and only great women and men can stand before an historic trend and stop it. So do your very best but you will be inundated and washed away by a rising tide of humanity and science which will sweep you away into social irrelevance.

Cheers.

Here ya go Jr., chew om this....

Trump stated Moore is the founder of Greenpeace. He was not. Actually, he is a paid shill for "timber, mining, chemical and the aquaculture industries” according to Greenpeace.

These are the sort of sham individuals Trump is packing his White House sham climate panel with. A message looking for deniers to articulate.
