My son uses one. He lives in DC about a mile form the Capitol and works in the post office building across the street. It suits him just fine. It's much better than taking a car and paying astronomical parking fees or cruising around for 20 minutes every morning looking for a parking space.

Portland has used the renta bikes for some time and people seem to like them. They just started the scooters and are having some trouble with people riding them down by the waterfront, where they aren't supposed to go.

I hear that the scooters are nice but I dont see how this works out economically since they have weight limits that tend to be low....seems to me that fat people will use them and wreck them...I dont see how the rental companies deal with that.

I am not sure about the Electric Bikes, if fat people burn those out.
