Trump to attend a mining round table in Duluth MN

Why does such an even scare the **** out of you?

Because the deregulation that has been proposed around lake Superior and the bwca could move us back 50 years.

Here in Wisconsin we fought off the largest open pit mine in the world. If that mine would have opened the flooding we just got up there would have flushed all the poisons down the bad river destroying the largest wild rice stands in the world then flushing into lake Superior.

As it is we already have the national guard involved and are requesting national disaster relief.

We need regulations to protect us from massive disasters and more Superfund sites.

Trump will be gone soon, if the regulations are so great we can always move them back in short order.

The world is not coming to an end because of this.

You don't know much about the long term effects of mining do you.

Duluth where the meeting is to take place still has contaminated drinking water from taconite dumping in the sixties.

Sort term deregulation creates short term profits and long term ecological disasters.

On the off chance that sort of thing happens feel free to shoot an "I told you so" my way. For the most part between government regulation from the executive branch and a whole lot more from the courts America is vastly over regulated.....it is not likely that removing a huge chunk of the executive branch regulation for a spell will bring doom. At the very least this will be a good experiment, we will get some proof that we are over regulated if we remove a bunch and not much bad happens. This is clearly what Trump expects. If bad things happen then you get proven right. I am much more pro regulation than Trump is but I do like experiments and proof.

Fine then let's experiment with your water not ours...

Trump eating a french fry scares the **** out of you.

Not at all in fact I completely approve of his diet.
I even encourage him to increase his cocaine consumption and continue to ride prostitutes and porn stars bareback at every opportunity...

Does MN have a functioning government anymore? Do the courts up there still work? Let's try to keep our heads during these trying times.

I live in Wisconsin I grew up in Minnesota. Both have been chipping away and in some cases completely eliminating regulations. The federal regulations are our only current protection and forgive me if I feel uncomfortable with trump and Pruitt in charge of those...

Do you not think that such problems and concerns will be voiced, just as they were the last time?

My dad was in oil and coal, and at one time he was the president of a Colorado strip mine. While I am sensitive to mining, an open-pit mine can be a disaster if care is not taken to protect the ecology of the area. It sounds as if you were right in opposing that mine.

My thing is, however, that coal is still the least expensive way to power the grid and, while there's no true "clean coal" there are methods of cleaning it during the firing process, via scrubbers. The newer plants are equipped with scrubbers and filters that remove the vast majority of toxins -- what you see (the white plumes) these days, is steam.

A lot of the fight agaisnt coal isn't coming from eco-groups but rather from the natural gas industry. The fossil fuel industry is every bit as corrupt (at high levels) as any mafioso-based industry. It's crazy and I won't say too much more about it -- I've said it all before -- but we ought not just dump coal because if anything ever occurs to threaten our energy industry, coal is still the least expensive form of electricity. And we have 200 years of reserves. I support new renewable technology -- but let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater -- not quite yet.

Republicans, Trump, the GOP all hate 'regulations.' They would rather have their progeny receive a planet void of life, glowing green with poisons & nuclear waste.

These folk look at the short term $$$$$, not the long term health of the only habitable planet we have ..........

I would hope he can do this; as much as possible for as long as he can humanly stand it

I resided in Louisiana for 26 years, Texas for 15 years, and I have been here in Minnesota for 16 years.
IMO the only thing not to like here is the duration of the winter season.
Government & the courts here function as good, even better, than any other US state.

I will be back on the 'Iron Range' (Trump country) this weekend for another graduation party. :drink

Actually, I think Trump does not think past himself. What planet we bestow to future generations means nothing to him. He is one of those people with the rare mental disability to believe that the world really exists to serve him and only him.

I have followed some people over time & Trump is one of the people I have studied, to some degree.

I have been interested in pop culture, to some degree, basically all of my life. When folks like Trump put themselves out on public display like Trump has for several decades, it is a bit difficult to not take some interest & learn about the individual. Everything I have learned about Trump over the past four decades has pretty much been a negative.

Most folks, particularly on this forum, most likely believe my dislike & contempt for Trump was merely a result of Trump being a candidate for, and becoming POTUS; that is not correct.
I have had a very healthy dislike for the asshole for a few decades. Why is that? Every fiber of Trump's being is all about Trump.

Since becoming POTUS Trump has become even worse than the vile, racist, bigot, liar, adulterer, con artist, you name it as long as it's immoral, etc., than before his inauguration.
It is beyond shameful that a nation such as the US, a nation with such potential, would have at the helm any individual such as Trump, that is nothing more than likely one of the most self centered individuals ever to disgrace this planet.

That is a excellent analysis. Trump reminds me of that character played by child actor Billy Mumy on a TWILIGHT ZONE episode where the kid has this power to do anything he wants and the entire world has been destroyed with the exception of the small number of people around him who must cater to his every whim or they too will be imagined out of existence. it was titled "It's A Good Life".

here is the opening as narrated by the great Rod Serling

Tonight's story on The Twilight Zone is somewhat unique and calls for a different kind of introduction. This, as you may recognize, is a map of the United States, and there's a little town there called Peaksville. On a given morning not too long ago, the rest of the world disappeared and Peaksville was left all alone. Its inhabitants were never sure whether the world was destroyed and only Peaksville left untouched or whether the village had somehow been taken away. They were, on the other hand, sure of one thing: the cause. A monster had arrived in the village. Just by using his mind, he took away the automobiles, the electricity, the machines—because they displeased him—and he moved an entire community back into the dark ages—just by using his mind. Now I'd like to introduce you to some of the people in Peaksville, Ohio. This is Mr. Fremont. It's in his farmhouse that the monster resides. This is Mrs. Fremont. And this is Aunt Amy, who probably had more control over the monster in the beginning than almost anyone. But one day she forgot. She began to sing aloud. Now, the monster doesn't like singing, so his mind snapped at her, turned her into the smiling, vacant thing you're looking at now. She sings no more. And you'll note that the people in Peaksville, Ohio have to smile. They have to think happy thoughts and say happy things because, once displeased, the monster can wish them into a cornfield or change them into a grotesque, walking horror. This particular monster can read minds, you see. He knows every thought, he can feel every emotion. Oh yes, I did forget something, didn't I? I forgot to introduce you to the monster. This is the monster. His name is Anthony Fremont. He's six years old, with a cute little-boy face and blue, guileless eyes. But when those eyes look at you, you'd better start thinking happy thoughts, because the mind behind them is absolutely in charge. This is the Twilight Zone.

That is Trump. An extreme narcissist who believes everyone else only exists to serve him and his own momentary self interest.

It will take decades to correct the damage he has done in just a year and a half. God save us from what may come down the road.

He must be removed ASAP.

Yah considering the meeting is being held at an undisclosed location I highly doubt that the Sierra club will have a seat at the table.

No good can come from this...

I live in SW Wisconsin in the driftless area. When I get tired of fishing the Mississippi and the best trout streams in North America I consider the iron range my stomping grounds.

Minnesota Wisconsin and Michigan are all fun. My dad just sold the family cabin on lake Vermillion last year. I'm going to miss that place.

The iron range is covered with scars of boom and bust iron mining and all the low hanging fruit has been mined so any new mining will be even more invasive and environmentally destructive.

Not at all in fact I completely approve of his diet.

I keep hearing all of the horror stories about Trumps Environmental changes.
National Geographic has been keeping track.
https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/03/how-trump-is-changing-science-environment/
What I would like to know, is which of the documented changes are going to reduce regulations of
mining?

Well first there is a whole lot of national Forest in the iron range that trump is all for selling off.

Second just what do you think this meeting is about?

Do you have a citation that Trump is trying to sell off National Forest land in Minnesota?
As to the meeting, Trump's policy changes related to duties on iron, might raise concerns and issues
and Trump discussing those concerns might be considered doing his due diligence.
