Trump to attend a mining round table in Duluth MN

I live in SW Wisconsin in the driftless area. When I get tired of fishing the Mississippi and the best trout streams in North America I consider the iron range my stomping grounds.

Minnesota Wisconsin and Michigan are all fun. My dad just sold the family cabin on lake Vermillion last year. I'm going to miss that place.

The iron range is covered with scars of boom and bust iron mining and all the low hanging fruit has been mined so any new mining will be even more invasive and environmentally destructive.

Lake Vermillion was the first place I went to a casino; Fortune Bay. Saw some guy win $10K playing black-jack with three 7s & he didn't even get excited.

Yep, the Chisholm, Hibbing, Mountain Iron, Buhl, Virginia area is covered in old open pit mines.

Most of the folks that are pro mining likely don't even know the associated environmental risk & damage potential; it's ALL ABOUT money & screw everything else.

Never went to the casino.when we weren't fishing we usually went to the wolf center in ely or the bear park in Virginia.

I know many people up there are pro mining. The BWCA has well over a million visitors a year. If the mine near ely poisons the area it will cost far more than it makes.

When. The mining industry crashed in the eighties I would take trips up there to buy trucks that the out of work miners could not make payments on. No one up there had money so you could get them cheep.

Tourism is a far more stable industry for the iron range.

it's all about drinking; the range has some of the highest rates per capita for DUI in Minnesota

Wisconsin is #1 in the US for DUI & Minnesota is #2 in the US for DUI, per capita

I'm originally from Louisiana, where the state sport is eating/food

the state sport in Minnesota is DUI .............

Yah considering the meeting is being held at an undisclosed location I highly doubt that the Sierra club will have a seat at the table.

No good can come from this...

Seeing as people have tried to crash these kinds of meetings in the past. I can understand why the location would be undisclosed.

This is the same kind of meeting that each president has had to go through. I can feel you on being iffy on the prospects of it's outcome. However I do not see an overt reason for anyone to be worried.

Well, I have a solution for all of you who oppose coal.

Stop using electricity. If all of you who oppose coal stopped using it, maybe we wouldn't need it?

I live in Wisconsin I grew up in Minnesota. Both have been chipping away and in some cases completely eliminating regulations. The federal regulations are our only current protection and forgive me if I feel uncomfortable with trump and Pruitt in charge of those...

Why don't you tell everyone the truth about Minnesota's Iron Range, namely that almost all of the iron ore already got mined a long time ago and what's left is slim pickings and won't really ever revive the boom economy of the old days.

I resided in Louisiana for 26 years, Texas for 15 years, and I have been here in Minnesota for 16 years.
IMO the only thing not to like here is the duration of the winter season.
Government & the courts here function as good, even better, than any other US state.

I will be back on the 'Iron Range' (Trump country) this weekend for another graduation party. :drink

The Italian girls up there in Iron Range country were AMAZING.

It isn't about COAL mining, fer God's sake.

Well, with modern techniques, someone must think it's still a profitable venture.

Diminishing returns.
Anything is profitable if you remove all the safeties....ALL of them, and in the case of the MN Iron Range I do mean ALL.
