Well, I don't know if the Arel is a good example or not. Most of that water disappears due to irrigation. It is therefor adding to the aguafer, that which doesn't evaporate.
The thing is that it will evaporate. That the climate around there has been suficently disrupted to make a vast amount of land far more arid than it other wise would be. It is also the case that this has been happening for a very long time. The Argo of Jason and the Argonaughts probably did sail to the Arel and beyond.
I hope that the warming profesied does happen. That should change the climate back to the holocene optimal and bring back those rains.
