When the Russians weren't helping Donald Trump it seems they were supporting anti-pipeline and anti-fracking activists.

Russian Propaganda Attack Against US Fossil Fuel Interests

Guest essay by Eric Worrall The House Science Committee has released a report detailing how Russia has been attempting to sabotage US domestic fossil fuel production, to promote their own fossil fuel exports, by stirring up climate activist opposition to US domestic fossil fuel production. Republicans Accuse Russia of Using Social Media to Roil U.S.…

According to the report, Hillary Clinton was fully aware of Russian efforts;
… Former Secretary of State and then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, with access to intelligence reports, made a private speech in 2014, according to documents from WikiLeaks, which included statements about the struggles of dealing with Russian-backed environmental groups. According to a media report, Secretary Clinton said the following: “We [the State Department and the U.S.] were up against Russia pushing oligarchs and others to buy media. We were even up against phony environmental groups, and I’m a big environmentalist, but these were funded by the Russians to stand against any effort, ‘Oh that pipeline, that fracking, that whatever will be a problem for you,’ and a lot of the money supporting that message was coming from Russia.”

To that end, the Kremlin is attempting to make, as Senator Cardin’s report states, “useful idiots” of unwitting environmental groups and activists in furtherance of its energy influence operations.33 Although this is not a new tactic in the Kremlin’s playbook, it has been adapted to account for modern technological advancements like the Internet and social media. Throughout history, the Kremlin has engaged and manipulated unwitting individuals to disseminate propaganda in furtherance of its global agenda.34 The Kremlin continues to employ this tactic, which has become substantially more effective with the proliferation of the Internet and social media. By leveraging the sincerely held views and beliefs of unwitting agents, the Kremlin is able to exploit polarized issues in American democracy to influence action in furtherance of its agenda.

Well NOW we'll see some action on protecting ourselves from Russian interference.

They hurt somebody's money that the government actually cares about.

Not at all surprising considering fracking under Obama doubled our oil output and helped bring down the world price of oil. The entire Russian economy depends on oil exports and anything below $80 a barrel constrains their spending. Russia is a one trick pony that depends on exporting fossil fuels to survive. All the more reason to embrace alternative energy, reduce our oil consumption and keep starving that beast for cash.

The large increase was done mostly on STATE OWNED land, Obama was opposing most drilling throughout his Presidency. He certainly placed a lot of the Federal area off limits.

Russia continues to be a poorly run nation since they have a lot of Natural Resources to use for economic development, but they find a way to keep their economy weak and one dimensional as you correctly stated.

They need to drop Putin, install a moderate to reduce their overcooked Military and develop a more diversified economy.

The Russians can't drop Putin, he's President for life. Anyone who opposes him is killed or imprisoned. The Russian economy is poor because the oligarchs are bleeding it dry, money is flying out of Russia as fast as they can move it. This why they are looking for more countries to sack. The best way to combat Russia is to keep oil and gas prices low and get the Manchurian candidate out of the Oval office as soon as possible.

Among the bank’s major shareholder oligarchs is at least one with both deep ties to the Kremlin and a connection to Trump. In addition to doing time in jail on murder-related charges, Dimitry Rybolovlev, famously bought a Palm Beach, Florida house from Trump for $95 million in 2008—a $53 million markup over what Trump bought it for in 2005—and when other Palm Beach County real estate fell by an annual rate of 19.2 percent. That is a 126% profit in the midst of the US housing crisis. Rybolovlev never even moved into the house, tearing it down in 2016 and selling parts of the property for millions of dollars less than he paid for it to a trust named 515 North County Road Trust.

Yeah it is a sick situations down there.

It doesn't surprise me to learn the Russians were backing anti fracking and other U.S. fossil fuel productions.

Jill Stein the green party candidate is who Russia Today endorsed for president in 2016. Stein was arreitsted in Sept 2016 for defacing construction equipment at the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota.

Russian's petroleum exports are one of the largest in the world. Russia's oil exports go to Europe and Eurasia, 12% goes to Asia, 6% to North and South America, 0.7% to Africa and 0.3% to Australia and New Zealand.

Most will recall leading up to the 2016 elections there was a boom in oil and natural gas exports from the U.S. even though the Obama administration tried to stifle the progress through feckless regulations while killing the coal industry. Obama's global warming incentives were music to Putin's ears.

Edit- As far as the OP and the comment "When the Russians weren't helping Donald Trump" I find that amusing. For what I have seen as far a Russia goes not helping any one party but rather causing chaos in this country.

Russia was feeding Green anti-Frack campaigns so it can get rich selling gas to snowflakes

The Western media was apoplectic about Russia!Trump!Hillary! but apparently missed the real game. Behind the scenes, the Russians were feeding the eco-gullibles “Frack-hate” campaigns in the UK and elsewhere in the hope of curbing the threat Fracking posed to Russian gas exports. It’s paying off — British people are buying Russian gas.
Did the Russians capture Victoria and South Australia? Who knows. The ABC won’t ask, and environmentalists won’t tell. Possibly Putin didn’t need to bother — we’re pretty good at destroying our export industries ourselves.
Before we’d even had a debate here in Australia, everyone “knew” fracking was bad.
h/t to GWPF which has a whole string of stories.
Green Russian Anti-Fracking Campaign paying off: Britain becomes more dependent on Putin’s Gas

Financial Times, 14/03/18
Half of Britain’s imports of liquefied natural gas so far this year have come from Russia, illustrating how UK households have started sending more money to Moscow after Vladimir Putin made boosting exports of the super-cooled fuel a priority.
The background –Russia’s War on Fracking

Tom Rogan, National Review Online, Feb 2015
Today, Russia is waging another active-measures campaign. But this time Russia’s target is fracking. The facts are clear. Fracking, which is revolutionizing energy politics, offers a cheap, new source of global power. But that’s not all. In offering Europe independence from Russian energy exports, fracking poses a direct challenge to Russia. Because Putin depends for revenue on his oil and natural gas-exports, fracking’s cheaper alternative presents him with a big problem. Indeed, lower oil prices are already driving Russia’s economy into recession.
Facing this threat, Russian intelligence has implemented a three-pronged strategy.
First, Russia has ramped up covert payments to environmental groups in the West. By supporting well-intentioned environmentalists with hard cash (often without their knowledge), Russian intelligence gains Western mouthpieces to petition Western audiences in its favor. Based on Russia’s prior record, we can also assume that Putin has funneled money through intermediaries to sympathetic Western politicians.
Second, the Russian SVR (CIA equivalent) has directed its spies to gather intelligence on the American energy industry….
Finally, Russian intelligence’s biggest cover operation — its RT “news” outlet — is undertaking a massive propaganda campaign against fracking….
Even earlier — apparently Russia tested out the idea in Romania in 2014

Protesters appeared out of nowhere
Romanian officials including the prime minister say that the struggle over fracking in Europe does feature a Goliath, but it is the Russian company Gazprom, not the American Chevron.

Vlasa Mircia, the mayor of this destitute village in eastern Romania, thought he had struck it rich when the American energy giant Chevron showed up here last year and leased a plot of land he owned for exploratory shale gas drilling.
But the encounter between big business and rural Romania quickly turned into a nightmare. The village became a magnet for activists from across the country opposed to hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. Violent clashes broke out between the police and protesters. The mayor, one of the few locals who sided openly with Chevron, was run out of town, reviled as a corrupt sellout in what activists presented as a David versus Goliath struggle between impoverished farmers and corporate America.
“I was really shocked,” recalled the mayor, … “We never had protesters here and suddenly they were everywhere.”. . .

What is it about some people who feel it is their duty to hijack and otherwise thread crap with tired partisan arguments just when a thread gets "legs" and becomes informative?

I would be interested in reading a thread on how ordinary people actually live in Russia day to day.

Russia's biggest problem with oil is that like all extraction industries, it doesn't add intellect to the population like hi-tech does. It keeps people stupid. After all you only have to be smart enough to do your job without getting fired.

I guess the Russian agent provocateurs really do count as watermelons, Green on the outside, but Red on the inside.

My daughter got pregnant under Obumbles, I'm pretty sure it had nothing to do with him.

Russia's biggest problem is that Putin and his oligarchs is bleeding Russia dry and using the money to buy condos in Miami and NYC. Guess who is responsible for those sales made with dirty money?

How many rich friends do the Clinton's have that got even richer with his free trade agreements, relocating their businesses to cheap labor, and create even more dependency on government from a significant loss of high tech jobs??

Think about what you are saying. Shouldn't we worry first about our political dirt like the Clintoon's?

LOL Does Hillary have an arsenal of ICBM's now? Hillary has been investigated more than God and nothing was found. Putin is assassinating people with exotic nerve toxins in GB and you want more investigations of Hillary? It really is disgustingly stupid.

It’s just Russia acting in Russian interests, again.

When their fossil fuel extraction business was threatened, this happened:

7 Years Before Russia Hacked the Election, Someone Did the Same Thing to Climate Scientists – Mother Jones

:bs

Sorry, but no. Climategate was more likely carried out by an internal whistleblower. From your link:

". . . At the time, some observers openly wondered whether Russia might have orchestrated the Climategate hack. Investigators and other experts haven’t found much to support that hypothesis—the true culprit remains a mystery. . . ."

How could they?

Yeah. Sophisticated hacking via Wikileaks.

Looks like a pattern we’ve seen recently.

Yep. Just informed and logical speculation.

The climategate emails could have just as easily been an insider, who was not happy with the damage
being done to science, by things like excluding papers from peer review, even if they have to redefine what peer review is.

I suppose.

What CT rag are you hearing that from?

Putin doesn't concern me. The Clinton's do because they directly affect us.

I suppose.

But it’s not likely.
Why would it not be likely, anyone in the field knows what happens to people who publicly
do not toe the IPCC line. If they were upset at the unscientific manor of the data handling,
anonymously releasing the dirty laundry exposed in the emails, would be safe way to protest.

You’d think they might publish stuff that proves them wrong.

But that’s not easy when the overwhelming mass of data points in one direction.

Not sure how committing a felony and hoping not to get caught is a ‘safe way to protest’.

Then again, if you are in Russia and are protected by Putin...it is pretty safe.
