Climate Deniers Banned from Reddit

This is regrettable, even silly, but not at all the same thing. Governments have many times attempted to control the language used by civil servants. That is not the same thing as ruling a point of view out of public debate.

So a private company exercising its right to determine the content of its own website is enough to elicit Orwellian quotes from you about the preservation of freedom of speech. But the government choosing to suppress the findings of its own scientists is merely "regrettable"? Your communist tendencies are showing, Jack!

The government action applies only to its own employees. Reddit offers a public forum. So yes, Reddit's action merits the Orwell quote while the government action is just mindless bureaucracy.

Shooting the messenger always works. But that aside, it wasn't Watts' graph, it was my graph.

Well I'm confused. Because earlier you said you posted something from Watt's website.

You're being ridiculous. Reddit, like any other private publisher, online or offline, is perfectly entitled to select what it publishes according to its own criteria. There is nothing Orwellian about that - it is simply a private company exercising its freedom to publish what it pleases.

Anyway, have you actually read 1984? If anything is Orwellian, it is the bizarre control of language exercised by the current US government on its scientists. It's straight from the doublespeak copybook.

No one is threatening the free speech of those who believe as you do. Only your side threatens the free speech of opponents.

Reddit is a Scientific forum. I do not participate in Reddit. However, their Moderators have the right to do whatever they decide. My last post on this forum was put in the Basement, and later eradicated, because I asked the question - "Are There are Professional (paid) Climate Denier" posters on this forum. Doesn't sound Free Speech is totally accepted here either.

It applies only to civil servants, who have been subject to language guidelines from the dawn of time. I was one for nearly 34 years.

No - It is much worse. Much-much worse than a Forum. Kind of like Nazi Germany or Russia or China.

"Political bias optional. Civility a MUST!"

You said it much better than I did. Absolutely true! Extreme fascism - Communism - take your pick with this Administration.

The quote was the DP motto.

From the original link, here's another quote from the Reddit moderator.

Over and over, solid peer-reviewed science was insulted as corrupt, while blog posts from fossil-fuel-funded groups were cited as objective fact. Worst of all, they didn’t even get the irony of quoting oil-funded blogs that called university scientists biased.

And again: so what? Free country. Free speech. I have seen here how wildly you (to take one example) throw around unfounded claims of fossil fuel connections.
Under Reddit's rules the recent Svensmark/Shaviv paper is out of bounds. There's no justification for that.

Lewandowsky Cook and Ecker (who he?) have two new articles at the Journal of Applied Research in Memory and Cognition. The first “Beyond Misinformation: Understanding and Coping with the ‘Post-Truth’ Era” “…explores the growing abundance of misinformation, how it influences people, and how to counter it. And outlines “a number of recommendations to … Continue re

On Reddit:

4. Arguments dismissing established scientific theories must contain substantial, peer-reviewed evidence

In the climate change denial play book, precious little of that is supplied...lots of back of the envelope stuff however.....by non experts claiming superior skills.

Looks like Reddit was having trouble controlling the Climate Science discussions. The link is a long message, justifying the action, from one of the moderators.

Reddit?s science forum banned climate deniers. Why don?t all newspapers do the same? | Grist
Instead of the reasoned and civil conversations that arise in most threads, when it came to climate change the comment sections became a battleground. Rather than making thoughtful arguments based on peer-reviewed science to refute man-made climate change, contrarians immediately resorted to aggressive behaviors. On one side, deniers accused any of the hard-working scientists whose research supported and furthered our understanding of man-made climate change of being bought by “Big Green.” On the other side, deniers were frequently insulted and accused of being paid to comment on reddit by “Big Oil.”

After some time interacting with the regular denier posters, it became clear that they could not or would not improve their demeanor. These problematic users were not the common “internet trolls” looking to have a little fun upsetting people. Such users are practically the norm on reddit. These people were true believers, blind to the fact that their arguments were hopelessly flawed, the result of cherry-picked data and conspiratorial thinking. They had no idea that the smart-sounding talking points from their preferred climate blog were, even to a casual climate science observer, plainly wrong. They were completely enamored by the emotionally charged and rhetoric-based arguments of pundits on talk radio and Fox News.

LMAO! When I think of reddit...the first thing I think of is constructive arguments with peer reviewed data. Lmao.

[h=1]Editorial Narratives in Science Journalism[/h]Guest Essay by Kip Hansen Science journalism is hard to get right. There is the constant struggle to clearly explain one’s topic without over-simplifying or misrepresenting by dumbing-down the details in hopes of communicating better and on the opposite side, explaining the topic in far too great an esoteric technical detail and far above…

When I post the numbers of Greenland's ice mass you cite NASA/GRACE and say I am the one using information further from the raw reality.

You have it backwards.

I don't use Reddit. I am also an environmentalist, having grown up in the era of "tree huggers" and even supported purchasing land in Brazil to prevent mass deforestation.

I've lived long enough, and traveled far enough to note the seasons have undergone some serious changes, and I am not a climate denier.

But I found this excerpt interesting:

Switch the argument to the Trump election and current Presidency, change Talk Radio to NYT/WaPo and Fox News to CNN...and you have a description of half the people who cry for collusion, impeachment, etc. in this Forum.

I am not surprised at this effort at censorship. Leftist's support free expression; as long as it is expression they agree with. They simply label any expression they don't agree with as "hate speech," which justifies censorship.

IMO, if the Pro-Change arguments are sound, then there should be no need to ban people who disagree. Simply destroy their arguments with logic and evidence, then ignore them if they don't respond in the same fashion.

I was banned by Reddit about 6 years ago, despite that I was quite civil and tried to support my comments with credible evidence. They hated that I was getting a LOT of positive support, which they said openly.

My account was put on permanent hold at Rightnation (December 2007) forum for no specified rule breaking. The owner simply didn't like me is why she did it, she and one of her Moderators stalked (and others who were banned) me in two forums I later joined, other victims of such stalking were ready to file a lawsuit in civil court if they didn't back off. The RN owner lied like hell for saying she can't read the Personal Messages, since she was having unusual ability to know what was being discussed in them. I exposed her lie at another forum where a number of ban victims moved to.

Democratic Underground Banned me after 3 comments for supporting Dennis Kuchinich right to be at a Presidential debate.

Bouncers forum owner banned me for my terrible statement in the e-mail that he is doing a poor job stopping spam (which was becoming a chore to delete) , advised that he upgrade to phpBB3 to fix it. After he left the discussion, his Global Moderator took the ban down. I decided that place was no longer worth my time when I get mistreated so badly. Not long afterwards, the forum was destroyed by a flood of spamming, poor phpBB2 set up didn't have a chance being several years out of date and wasn't even supported anymore.

There are a few more I could talk about......

Yes I find it is quicker to be banned from Ecco sites for asking questions than it is to get banned from religious site for challenging their God delusions.

Some environmentalist or climate change enthusiast is still gonna have to explain to me why they want to exclusively curtail CO2 when it is 5% of the greenhouse gases. Makes sense:roll:. 'There's gonna be climate catastrophe if something isn't done soon. Let's work to reduce the 5%.' Let's call environmentalists and climate change enthusiasts the 5 percent.
