  • California Governor Jerry Brown said Saturday that destructive winter wildfires will be the 'new reality'
  • Blamed climate change for deadly infernos and urged lawmakers to take heed of natural disasters
  • Fire crews bracing for high winds that are expected to whip Southern California wildfires Saturday night
  • Gusts of up to 40mph are expected Saturday and up to 50mph Sunday in the Los Angeles area
  • Six fires have destroyed more than 500 buildings, killed dozens of horses and forced 212,000 to evacuate
  • First fire-related death confirmed on Friday after woman was found dead in crash along evacuation route

To make a long story short, there is no scientific basis for saying that increased wildfires in California are due to global warming.

It looks like climate change is going to be the number one excuse for all liberal government failures.

For example, California teacher's pensions, first responder pensions, bullet trains, etc., have sucked up all the money that used to be used for interior husbandry and wild fire abatement, and so none of that gets done any more. So lots more wild fires! But Jerry blames the climate instead.

The people of California have the government they deserve. The rest of us should really not be required to care, but we have to because California is such a big part of the US economy. The blue government running the state into the ground hurts all of us.

I've got to say that it is shadenfreudalicious to see the rich and famous fucquewads on the coast suffering from the fires. They thought they were immune to the misery that their stupid feel good policies were causing the people.

This is one of the most disgusting and morally reprehensible things I've ever seen anyone say on DP. People are losing their homes and their lives and you're happy about it, because the ultra dry, tinder-like conditions of drought are the deserved effects of liberal politics.

Sometimes I wonder how you can continue to sink further and further into such hate and indecency against your fellow man, yet you surprise me again and again. Shame on you, this is truly awful.

They live in a wild fire prone area. We know this because the trees and other life there have adapted to it.Fire ecology doesn't seem to mean a thing to those people. But we shouldn't joy in people suffering from their own stupidity.

I dont have an answer to this, it is a real question, I am in the UK so don't know;

If you live in a place where there is a decent possibility of forrest fire why don't you make sure that the area around your house is cleared of anything that can burn?

Then use the pool or create some other water store to use as a sprinkler system before the flames hit so everything is wet around your house and that you house is wet when the firs is actually there?

The people of California have voted to impose this upon themselves.

Are we to deny their right to govern themselves?

In effect, they have voted to burn their houses down.

I had no right to cast a vote in their various decisions.

Wow. Some people seemingly never get tired of looking stupid.

I dont understand how Jerry Brown can,
1. Blame the fires on global warming
2. Dismiss fire ecology
3. Deny that solutions that have been used to help soothe the problem's funding and yet fund other ancedotal projects.

The people of California voted for wild fires and voted to burn their houses down? Are you that laughably inept at reality that you think that's the case? Wtf does that nonsense even mean?

The #1 cause is allowing building in areas historically prone to fire. California and every municipality makes a ton of money on building permits, and downstream services like utilities, etc.

Here are some up to date fire maps for you:

This is just not true. Scientific American has a recent article about this.

More BS. California is still and has always been spending money on fire prevention including a fund for grants to support local fire prevention activities.

http://www.ebudget.ca.gov/FullBudgetSummary.pdf Check pages 46 and 47.

If your misinformed opinion of "blue government" is so low then how do you feel about Trump's proposed federal budget and it's cuts to the U.S. Forest Service? Here is a informative article about what Trump wants to do that will do what you are accusing California of doing but to the whole country. Here is a quote:

As smokeaters in the Golden State are battling 14 major wildfires, Congress is debating a White House proposal to cut $300 million from the U.S. Forest Service's wildfire fighting initiatives and $50 million from its wildfire prevention efforts — all on top of a 23% reduction of federal funding for volunteer fire departments around the nation.

And what does Trump want to do with the saved money? Give it to mostly the rich in the form of tax cuts.

I've got to say that it is shadenfreudalicious to see the rich and famous fucquewads on the coast suffering from the fires. They thought they were immune to the misery that their stupid feel good policies were causing the people.

What a screwed up thing to think and say especially when it is based on lies and misinformation.

It means that stopping logging from clearing underbrush and demanding the nature be allowed to act as nature will act (where it's convenient only) will result in this stuff.

Californians also refuse to capture the rains during the rainy season and allow them to drain away into the ocean.

They also choose to save near extinct smelt in favor of irrigating crops.

They also choose to live in a tinder box desert AND make these outrageously stupid choices and you have the current situation.

The fires create tragedies. The choices that lead to the tragedies are personal and societal choices. I mean, this happens every year. EVERY YEAR!

It's more predictable than Hurricane damage to a building on the Gulf Coast or flood damage to a building on a Mississippi River flood plain.

What might finally cause some wiser action is that the California Cannabis Crop is in flames and THIS may finally connect the fires to something tangibly meaningful for the residents.

Around the 1970s, some government agencies began adopting “let it burn policies” if human habitat was not threatened. An increasing use of prescribed burns attempted to reduce abnormal fuel loads and restore the natural fire balance. But fire ecologists still “estimated that approximately 3 to 6 times more area must be burned to restore historical fire regimes.” The unnaturally low fire frequencies of the 1980s and 90s can be seen in Figure 5 from a 1999 research paper by Dr. Swetnam. Based on fire scars of old living trees from 64 southwest study sites, fires were 5 to 15 times more numerous and widespread between 1700 and 1880 than during the 1990s. When global warming demagogues argue climate change has now resulted in 5 times more fires than observed in the 1970s, they fail to inform the public this increase is largely due to a shift away from the previous complete fire suppression policy to selectively allowing fires to burn.

A good article.

Always in such a state of high dudgeon, and I suspect that none of it is sincere.

Yes, the increased wildfires are the result of bad governance; there's plenty of evidence for that. And it's usually not the rich people on the coast who suffer from the bad governance, it's the poorer communities of the California interior.

You're celebrating that innocent people are losing their homes and lives. This is the sociopathic rambling of someone devoid of all morals. To think you actually pretend to be a "Christian" elsewhere. Very christ-like.

As Barack Obama once said, elections have consequences. It is not celebrating to acknowledge that decades of election results and unwise policy choices contributed to this outcome.

You're actually blaming droughts and dryness on liberal politics. Certifiably stupid. Par for the course, Jack.

The correlation is likely as good as the correlation between CO2 and temperature:mrgreen:,
Likely unrelated, but can be plotted together.

What's funny is the idea that left wingers have compassion for the rich.

But there is a cosmic justice here: these people supported stupid and wrong headed policies out of their stupid and wrong headed ideas about nature and the climate and now they are paying the price.

And I'm sorry, but you don't know a damned thing about Christianity. Christians will feel moved to go out and help these people, and I'm sure a lot of them are doing that. They will provide sympathy and pray for the victims of the fires. But the fact that human vanity and hubris has resulted in ruin would be regarded by Christians as SOP, worthy of a mordant comment or two at least.

"Droughts and dryness" are to be expected in most of the American West and always have been. I suggest you take a look at the link I posted at #13. The policies which exacerbated the fire potential of drought and dryness are what was truly stupid, and those policies derived from election results and unwise government decisions.
