Rex Tillerson openly says he disagreed with Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement

6/14/17

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson openly confirmed Wednesday that he disagreed with President Trump's decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Agreement. "I was free to express my views. I took a counter view to the decision that was made," Tillerson said. Tillerson first admitted his opposition at a hearing Tuesday on the State Department's budget. The former ExxonMobil CEO told senators that he was one of the Trump administration's most outspoken critics of the move to bail on the global climate accord. "My view didn't change," Tillerson said. "My views were heard out. I respect that the president heard my views, but I respect the decision he's taken." The Paris climate accord seeks to combat climate change by curbing carbon emissions. Tillerson noted that Trump was "quite deliberative" in his decision-making process over the deal, and "took some time to come to his decision, particularly waiting until he had heard from European counterparts in the G7."

Good to see Rex Tillerson reclaim a bit of testicular fortitude. Too bad he gave it back at the kiss Lord Trumps ring Cabinet meeting for the press.

Trump obviously didn't listen to any of the G7 presidents. The US, Syria, and Nicaragua are the sole official environmental deadbeats on the planet.

So then Rex Tillerson has more integrity than James Comey and the rest of the Obama drones in his administration. It just goes to show that Trump is a man of integrity and hires people who only want what's best for America: not a bunch of Borg who will unthinkingly and unquestioningly do whatever he says.

It is quite true that leaving was a risky decision. But not so much as leaving ttp. But it is too early to judge it.

It could also be that Tillerson knows some things he is not allowed to disclose to Trump,
as part of his non disclosure agreement.
Like the US will not have any issues meeting the emission requirements of the Paris agreement,
because of plans to introduce carbon neutral fuels, as soon as they are economically viable.

Tillerson is just protecting Exxon-Mobil's interests. Many corporations supported the agreement. From what I have read they wanted stability more than anything and realize Trump will not be President forever and it is very likely the next one will rejoin the rest of the world. Trumps actions hurt the ability of corporations to plan for the future and to capitalize on the profits of green energy.

Corporations have been strong armed for the past 8 years. When green energy is profitable, the corporations will be there exploiting the profits like flies on ****.

You won't be saying that when he gets fired.

Rex Tillerson isn't getting fired. He's going to be commended by Trump.

Actually leaving the agreement will dry up a lot of the possibilities that green energy brings. We are liable to be left behind again and the profits will go to China or Europe instead. It's like betting on the dinosaur to rule the Earth forever.

Please cite what possibilities will "dry up" as a result of the US not being part of the Paris agreement?

Companies gain market leadership because they thrive on local markets first and then become global. This is what happened in China with solar panel manufacturing — the government spent heavily to create a local market for the technology.

It pumped $89.5 billion into the industry in 2015 alone, and in January 2017 its National Energy Administration announced it would spend $360 billion through 2020 on renewable energy. As Chinese companies have perfected the process and scaled up manufacturing, they were in position to dominate solar panels around the world. Today the three biggest solar makers are based in China: Trina Solar, JinkoSolar and JA Solar.

If ending our participation in the Paris Accord slows the U.S. advanced energy market, our American companies will be at a huge competitive disadvantage globally. They won’t have a robust local market to build on. Before long, we will find ourselves buying energy technology from other countries, just as other countries now soak up our digital tech products.

Re: Rex Tillerson openly says he disagreed with Trump's decision to withdraw from the

You have not addresses why US possibilities would dry up because we are not part of the Paris agreement!
Do you think we will stop all of our ongoing research?

Without a robust home market we will be at a disadvantage to other more enlightened countries. It is was all in the article.

You are missing the point, there is nothing in the Paris agreement that would encourage any more development
than is already happening. US CO2 emission levels are down below 1995 levels.
Home Solar is growing at a steady rate, and costs continue to fall.
The thing that is hindering solar at this point are the rules that allowed early adopters to get paid
at or above the market rate for surplus electricity.
The federal government needs to unify the grid attach rules to something that works for both the homeowner and the utility.
The economic curves to replace all fossil fuels with man made carbon neutral ones, are already in motion,
and the transition will occur when the market driven price of the man made fuels are naturally less expensive
than the fuels made from fossil oil. (That looks like about $90 a barrel oil)
I think Tillerson as CEO of Exxon could know all about the technology, but non disclosure agreements keep him from saying.
He does not see any harm in the Paris agreement, because he knows the emission limits would be easy to meet.
Trump sees the Paris agreement as an unneeded expense.

What Tillerson knows is that leaving the agreement will put the US at a disadvantage by denying us a robust home market for green technology. Carbon based energy is a dinosaur and by encouraging its use we are abdicating the future.

Again, the home market for green technology is neither helped or harmed by our involvement in the Paris agreement.
Tillerson see the dollar amount they want to extract out of the US as acceptable, Trump does not.
