I guess the models are failing. The warming in the arctic is apparently worse than anyone predicted.

"It was designed as an impregnable deep-freeze to protect the world’s most precious seeds from any global disaster and ensure humanity’s food supply forever. But the Global Seed Vault, buried in a mountain deep inside the Arctic circle, has been breached after global warming produced extraordinary temperatures over the winter, sending meltwater gushing into the entrance tunnel.

The vault is on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen and contains almost a million packets of seeds, each a variety of an important food crop. When it was opened in 2008, the deep permafrost through which the vault was sunk was expected to provide “failsafe” protection against “the challenge of natural or man-made disasters”.

But soaring temperatures in the Arctic at the end of the world’s hottest ever recorded year led to melting and heavy rain, when light snow should have been falling. “It was not in our plans to think that the permafrost would not be there and that it would experience extreme weather like that,” said Hege Njaa Aschim, from the Norwegian government, which owns the vault."

But I have it on good assurance from some plumber that there really is no warming, and ice isn't melting. I also have it on good assurance from a guy who cuts and pastes denier blogs in his spare time that stories like this are all fake news. I also have talked to engineers who's expertise is in all forms of science (even though they never actually did any) that stuff like this is just exaggerated because of the giant conspiracy. So there's that.

I like melt the poles, have Global Tropical Climate, but isn't there some way we could keep sea level about six feet below where it is today? Otherwise it's 250 feet.

We're going to loose most coral to heat and acidity.

Who's going to feed the polar bears?

I've got three ways to siphon oceans.

1) Siphon; a long tube to geocentric orbit and back, the force of the water falling pulls the water up, two pump stations earth-side with vacuum pumps all the way up and you don't need a downspout, but you need a ballast above geocentric.

2) Beam it. take freshwater.

3) Convert the H2O to H2 and LOX and ship it into outer space. Oxygenate the atmosphere, convert the H2 to He for your blimps and Helium building foam. You need Nitrogen for all the Oxygen you can produce and yous space environments, so chip another hydrogen atom from some Oxygen. All this fusion and fission is great for rocket engines, but you're going to get atoms moving in very fast streams especially when you slow down so let's be looking for some way slow our exhaust and another device pass through asteroids etc. so your ships don't get blown apart or eroded by dust.

I see your line of thinking is quite similar to the other amateur engineers in this forum.

Oh dear. Those scientist who got a grant to put a load of seeds in a cold place put them in a place that has been much warmer in the past. Even in the last few thousand years.

It has warmed up a bit since 1850.

If you want a proper safe from warming place you will have to go much further away from wam places. Up a mountain in Greenland will do.

Or, like Spitsbergen.

Poor siting, architecture and engineering.

Yep.

They used an abandoned coal mine. What I find funny is they blame natural cyclical events and AGW.

Is the OP going to claim that it has never melted there before?

What I'm curious about is how this seed storage facility is powered to keep it cold. If the world ends, how will refrigeration be powered?

At the rate we are losing heirloom crops to GMOs, combined with any potential global disaster that could happen, this storage facility is incredibly important.

It opened in 2008. I would suggest that rather than blaming global warming, you blame poor planning. I mean, these dummies couldn't protect these seeds for 10 years, let alone have them stored to save humanity from a global disaster.

Actually, all is just fine. The water poured into the entrance and froze. Nothing was damaged.
